"I was born in Greeley, Nebraska. I grew up in Nebraska, North Dakota, Missouri, and Iowa on farms. I graduated from high school at St. Mary's in Iowa City in 1943."

"I then attended Mercy Hospital School of Nursing, Iowa City, and graduated in January 1947. I worked as a nurse at several places and finally ended up at V.A. Hospital in Iowa City where I spent 20 years as a psychiatric nurse. I retired from that position June 1, 1986."
