Mom and Dad moved to Florida after getting married in New Jersey.
At first they stayed with some friends in Miami and later bought
an empty lot in Broward County to build a home. It was only a few
houses away from mom's Aunt Lilian and Uncle Harry Kingston.
Mom had several relatives from her father's side of
the family living in the area, so much so that it didn't seem that
far away from familiar family members, even though her mother still
continued to live in New Jersey.
Dad had some friends from New Jersey in the area also:
George & Joyce Nolen and Harry & Millie Schwandt.
Eventually the construction on the house was completed
and now we had a home. It was small by todays standards, just two
bedrooms, one bath and a carport but that was typical for those
days in that neighborhood. The mortgage was only $7,000.
When I was growing up as a child I remember my father
was not around much since he was always working, both at work and
at home. He started out doing appliance repair at Sears for a few
years and then got a better paying job at Associated Factory Service.
It seemed he could fix almost anything but the most profitable work
was in refridgeration repair.
As the family expanded, Dad kept expanding the house
to make more room. At first he enclosed the carport to make a bedroom
for Helen and then built a large screened in porch at the back of
the house.
Mom had a busy time with us three kids and tried to
have a social life of her own, but since money was always tight,
she got a part time job working at the preschool for 2 days a week.
Mom would take us kids to the beach often since it
was free. I remember that at first I was scared to be in the ocean
alone without Mom. Eventually she signed us up for swimming lessons
at the county pool.
She was always busy trying to improve on our living
conditions and being thrifty in the process. I can remember how
thrilled she was to get her first sewing machine and learning how
to sew.
She eventually got involved with a sorority.
.... To be continued.
