1962 Diary
MONDAY, JANUARY 1, 1962 The first day of the new year finds us feeling pretty good. We went to 7:30 Mass with Gene and Betty, after mass Dad and I visited The Holy Infant at the Crib & then I lit a candle. We had a very good breakfast and a light dinner then I baked a shoulder (Mom's ham,) for supper & had Gene and Betty over for supper. Then after dishes, Paul's family came - then we started playing cards & then Libb's family, all but Joe, came. We played cards at three tables - 2 4-hand, 1 6-hand. Bobby John & John F played cards together & Rita & Linda played together so we had a very nice evening.
TUESDAY, JANUARY 2, 1962 We went to Mass this morning. Seemed good to get back on a weekday again. Rec'd Bro. John's letter today. I went over to Anna Marie's for a while this a.m. Mrs. Dappen also came over & we had a nice visit. Carol came while I was gone, but had to leave in the p.m. I fixed Pop's coat and then got ready to go to our card party - also read my prayers - had a good time at party. I had 259 points.
WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 3, 1962 We didn't get to Mass this morning as Mrs. Murphy called at 5 a.m. saying the furnace was out and she couldn't get it to go on - so I waked Pop up at 6:00 then he got right up and went over - but couldn't make it go - so we called the furnace man & Pop thought he was coming out at 7:30 so we ate our breakfast, but he didn't come all forenoon - I went over to see how Auntie Rose was coming along and if she was too cold, but she had the gas stove going and it wasn't too bad. Called the furnace man again and he came right out - had made a mistake this morning so he got it running - needs another thermostat. Dick & Reg here this eve. Washed today and started basting on aprons.
THURSDAY, JANUARY 4, 1962 We went to Mass, seemed good to get out again & we got along real good. It's quite a bit warmer and started to rain before noon so we caught some rain water for my plants. I got my extra aprons hemmed up this morning so Pop took them over to Auntie Rose for me. She is going to put the tucks in for me. I had quite a few phone calls - then did my ironing this p.m. so I was also pretty tired. Did some mending & went over to Krall's to baby-sit with Andy while they went bowling - I got home at 12:50 a.m.
FRIDAY, JANUARY 5, 1962 Went to Mass - Madden rode home with us . Sewed a little after breakfast - then we got the decorations off the little tree in the breezeway - and I also packed up some other things. Libb called us and invited us down for dinner next Sunday & they would come after us. Wilma called after dinner and talked a while - Reg also called this a.m. I sewed this evening and Gene & Betty came over and we finished taking down the lights & the tree and packed things up and put them away for another year, if God's willing, we hope to use them again next year. I kept the crib out until after the Feast of the Epiphany - after we got done we played some cards.
SATURDAY, JANUARY 6, 1962 The storm didn't turn out as they had predicted, so Dad & I went to Mass. No trouble at all - so thankful we got to go for the Feast of the Epiphany - so many there as it was a Mass for the Parish & Saturday's Catechism classes, a very good turn out. I wrote to Bro. John this a.m. - then I peeled up our old apples from our tree and cooked them up. I my usual Sat cleaning , Betty came and did the floors - Pat brought out the eggs and left the children here while they shopped. I was very tiered by the time I got my work done - Gene & Betty came over and we played Royal Rummy and 3 games of cards.
SUNDAY, JANUARY 7, 1962 We went to 7:30 Mass with Gene & Betty
- after breakfast I did up my work & got Rita's present wrapped & card signed.
Pat called up & talked awhile - also Wilma called. Then got ready & Lyle came
after Dad & I and we went to their home for Rita's birthday dinner. Gerald's
& Les****** & Rose Ann & Family also were there - late in the p.m. Gertrude
called & they had come down & she & Robby were to stay all night & had an appt
at the hospital tomorrow so they came after us & had supper there. Then we came
home, brought Marilyn to her apartment. Nick & Jimmy went home right away around
7:00 p.m.
MONDAY, JANUARY 8, 1962 Was pretty cold this morning, 3 or 4 above zero, but Pop and I got to Mass. Then home & had a good breakfast with Gertrude and Robby - the she looked at pictures from Bro. John & then worked on her store's inventory - I got dinner in good time & Gene took them to the hospital - then they didn't get out in time so Gene got them and brought them back here for supper then took them to the bus a little after 6:00 p.m. , the bus leaves at 6:25. Pretty bad weather, cold wind & low temperatures so we won't get to Mass in the morning.
TUESDAY, JANUARY 9, 1962 14 below zero this morning so we didn't go to Mass - very cold wind blowing. Water froze up for Genes over at Augustine, but Betty got it thawed out. Made a big batch of noodles & got them rolled out before noon. After noon Pop cut them for me and I made a good supper & Gene & Betty over. We played a few cards and they went home early. Got Bro. John's letter today and a box of jams, jelly & marmalade and a box of candy from Larry's.
WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 10, 1962 1 below zero. We didn't go to Mass - but Glenn came after us & we went out with him to help with the butchering. Betty worked about all forenoon trying to get the water froze out & it was also froze up by the pump so they put heat lamps down there, got it thawed out. Glenn & Pop came out when they came in to get Mary Lou. Betty helped Marilyn get her pies made . We got along pretty good out there. Glenn brought us home when he brought the sausage & lard in to be rendered ******* - then I watered my plants & got ready to go with Gene to Louise's for supper for Carl's birthday.
THURSDAY, JANUARY 11, 1962 12 below zero. We didn't get to Mass. I did my washing, 2 batches. Pop took Betty down to work around noon - listened to President Kennedy's State of the Union message, also worked some on my aprons. In the p.m. I kept busy and was quiet tired. Elizabeth called - then Pat called in the eve. - no company tonight. I made my Holy Hour.
FRIDAY, JANUARY 12, 1962 No Mass again today - I washed my hair and put it up - then rec'd a letter from Sister M - so I wrote to her right away & Betty mailed it for me at noon. This p.m. I wrote a letter to Bro. John and one to Larry to thank them for the box. Marilyn brought the 3 oldest children over for a little while as she went to the Dr. for a tetanus shot - then we had supper and Gene & Betty came over - then a little later pat & Glenn & family came & we played cards. We won 3 games against the men.
SATURDAY, JANUARY 13, 1962 We went to Mass again today as it was warmer - then we went to Me Too & bought groceries. Then home & had a good breakfast. I packed the crib up & we put it away. Pop took the wreath and swag down - now we have all Christmas things put away - but the flowers in the window boxes . I worked around getting my Saturday work & cleaning done, then we went to confession - home & did more Sat work & mended some - Betty came and cleaned the floors. In the eve Gene & Betty came & we played cards. Betty & I had real good luck, 5 games for us & 2 for the men.
SUNDAY, JANUARY 14, 1962 We went to Mass with Gene & Betty & they also took Marilyn F along. Pauls stopped in for some eggs and talked a while. Then we had a good breakfast - grape fruit, sausage & eggs. Then I made a good dinner & read the old papers - it started to snow & it snowed pretty hard. Gene & Betty came over and played around in the snow, brought Pop the Sunday paper. Then the rest of the p.m. Pop read and put the chains on the car but it doesn't look to promising to go to Mass in the morning. In the eve Dick & Reg & Eddie, Gene & Betty came. We won 4 games, the men 1.
MONDAY, JANUARY 15, 1962 We didn't go to Mass. Temperature about 3 below zero - got a good letter from Bro. John. I worked quite a lot on my apron today on & off. Made a good dinner, after dinner Tom, Catherine & Phyllis came. Tom then went with Gene - the girls helped me finish my puzzle. Then we played cards with Pop - Phyllis & I won 2 games and Pop & Catherine won 1 - Gene spaded some snow out to the lane - also at Augustine's & his own. Quite eve, no company.
TUESDAY, JANUARY 16, 1962 Around 4 below zero. Pop didn't want to drive out in the cold weather. Rec'd a letter from Sister Margaretta & 1 from Anita (a surprise.) I worked on my apron and read prayers. Catherine & Phyllis came again so we played cards with them and ended up with 5 games each for two days. Lee & Rose Ann & children came this evening. We had a nice time and played cards.
WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 17, 1962 We didn't get to Mass again today. Around 8 or 9 below zero - after 9:00 a.m. Betty took Dad & I over to West Branch. Pop wanted to see about some pump parts - but the boss wasn't there - then when we got home Glenn came with the eggs. Then I did my washing, 2 batches, also hand washing. Then I also baked a batch of oatmeal cookies & a batch of cup cakes and I almost did too much so have to watch out. I wrote to Cindy this noon.
THURSDAY, JANUARY 18, 1962 We didn't get to Mass, still below zero weather. Glenn came in for us & Bessie & went out there to spend the day - had a real good time - I did a little sewing, and then we picked out Hickory nuts the rest of the day - a big dinner and sausage & waffle supper. Ice cream in the eve. We played Royal Rummy for a while then came home. I had to make my Holy Hour yet so I was up late.
FRIDAY, JANUARY 19, 1962 About 1 or 2 below zero & snowing - so we are still not getting to Mass. Tom brought Johnny & Linda out to stay here today. I sent a birthday card to Ed. Then I did all my ironing before noon - then mended some & then started Bro. John's letter just a while before supper. This eve Dick, Reg & Eddie came, also Paul, Lillian, John & Linda - Lee, Rose Ann & boys. We played 8 handed Uchure. Men 2 - women 3.
SATURDAY, JANUARY 20, 1962 Today was our coldest day - we had around 17 or 18 below zero. Pauls had 22 below - so we didn't go to Mass - the most days in a row we missed together for a long time. Lillian, Catherine & Tom came out after Mass & ate their breakfast. I finished writing Bro. John's letter & we got it mailed. Then we rec'd a big one from him that he wrote last week & finished last Saturday just one week ago today so that's not bad. Betty came over & cleaned before noon. I didn't feel very good but felt better along towards eve. Gene & Betty came over & we played cards.
SUNDAY, JANUARY 21, 1962 Pretty cold again today. We went to 7:30 Mass with Gene & Betty - home & had a good breakfast and a light dinner. In the p.m. I put a canned ham in the oven for our supper. Clarence & Wilma came up for a little visit. Wilma still wearing a cast on her foot - but it did her good to get out. Then after they left Gene & Betty came over for supper & we played cards in the eve - they went home early.
MONDAY, JANUARY 22, 1962 4 below zero - so no Mass again today. I read my Mass prayers, worked a little on my apron - then started working on some of my old dresses. Then I started fixing or cutting out the cover for the pad for Auntie Rose's chair - so I worked long & hard on it & it felt real good to have that much done - now I just have to tie it. Quiet eve - no company.
TUESDAY, JANUARY 23, 1962 Around 2 or 3 below zero this morn. So we didn't get to Mass - had a good breakfast - then wrote a letter to Maurices. Then Shirley called and asked me to go along with them to see Mrs. Lockwood before they move to Florida. Mrs. Yoder & Dappen & I went with Shirley & Heidi. We had a nice time in they p.m. I did some mending. In eve worked on apron & watched TV No company.
WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 24, 1962 Around 10 above so we went to Mass. Lillian came for dinner so I got a pretty good dinner & did some mending & worked on apron this a.m. Lillian & Gene & Betty went after Ronny - Pop went to West Branch this p.m. & got that bill on pump parts straightened out . I finished the pad for Auntie Rose's chair and took it over and visited a while - came home and watered plants - mended on black dress then it was supper time. Gene & Betty helped Marilyn take the children to the DR this eve - Diane has ear infection - worked on apron this eve - started red & white one.
THURSDAY, JANUARY 25, 1962 We went to Mass again today with out chains on - it was really a nice day - Ronny came here for dinner today as his mother was working & the kids in school. We also had Doug & Diane here for a little while this a.m. I did my washing & got a pretty good dinner - really was tired - and after dinner I lay down for a while and then I did the dishes. Then I worked on Gene's new uniform coat in shortening the sleeves. After supper I sewed a little on the red & white apron - then Dick & Reg came over and we played 6 games of cards - 3 each.
FRIDAY, JANUARY 26, 1962 Got up to get ready for Mass - Betty called & told me to go back to bed as the roads were all iced covered - it had rained then temp down to freezing. I did go back to bed - but didn't sleep. We then got up around 7:30 a.m. & had our usual good breakfast . Ronny came again today - I made a lemon pie for dinner - also made buttermilk pancakes & eggs for the men - after dinner I finished Gene's coat. In the eve Gene & Betty came over - also Libb & Lyle & family also came - we played 8 handed cards - men won all the games.
SATURDAY, JANUARY 27, 1962 We didn't go to Mass again today as Pop didn't know how bad the ice would be. So I spent most of the forenoon writing a letter to Bro. John - then we mailed it up at the corner. I cooked a hen today and we had chicken for dinner - I had a chicken sandwich for supper. I did my usual cleaning this afternoon - watered plants - mended my corset - washed my hair & betty put it up for me & cleaned the floors - Pop helped her by shaking the rugs. In the eve Pauls family came also Lee, Rose Ann & family.
SUNDAY, JANUARY 28, 1962 We went to 7:30 Mass with Gene & Betty - then home & had a good breakfast - cooked up a pan of chicken noodles & took with us to Libb's - Gene & Betty took us. We had a very nice day - Rose Ann, Lee & family & also Carl & Louise were there - we played cards in the afternoon - Gene & Betty left early as they were going to Davenport with Pauls to take Ronny back to St. Ambrose - so we stayed for supper - came back with Lee & Rose Ann - then we watched TV after we got home - feeling better.
MONDAY, JANUARY 29, 1962 We went to Mass - got stuck a little on the ice then managed to get out. This a.m. I read some of the back papers & also worked on Louise's apron - after dinner I read my prayers & also worked on apron. Pop went down town and got a new hat & saw & rubber tips for chairs - Gene over for a little while - in the eve we watched TV & I worked on Gertrude's apron - made a mistake so I have to rip it out for a ways. Called Moe's & we plan to go up there tomorrow evening.
TUESDAY, JANUARY 30, 1962 We went to Mass again today - it makes the days go so much better. It snowed quite a lot so we began to wonder if we would go to Moe's***** - Wilma & Carol came out here for a little while this a.m. while Walt was down town. I made 3 bibs to take up for Moe's *****children . In the p.m. I finished them and read my prayers. Made a good waffle sausage supper for us & Gene & Betty - sausage that Pat & Glenn brought in for us, then we went to Moe's***** & had a good trip and a real nice visit with them - got home before 11:00 p.m.
WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 31, 1962 We didn't get to Mass today - Pop thought it would be too cold - got up around 7:30 a.m. We had a good breakfast. Louise called & said that Mrs. Grolmus died - then I did my washing - 2 batches. Washed up old overalls of Pop's and also did hand washing - was pretty tired by noon - after noon, after I read over the papers - rested & got my prayers read - Lillian & children stopped in & got 4 doz. Eggs. Anna Marie came over for a little visit. Quiet eve - no company.
THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 1, 1962 We got up and was getting ready for Mass & Pop saw it had snowed so decided we better not go this morning - but weather got better so we went in the p.m. to Novena & Confession & then some shopping & to the grocery store. So was very happy that we got all that done. After supper Paul & Lillian, Johnnie, Linda, Reg & Eddie came while the other went to the basket ball game. We had a good time playing cards - the men won 4 games, the women only 2 -
FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 2, 1962 We went to Mass this morning - took Marilyn Frantz with us - also took Madden home - I wrote to Gertrude & mailed it - then looked the papers over & mended my coat. Had buckwheat pancakes for dinner - I didn't feel very good today so I lay down for a while this p.m. Anna Marie & little Andy came over for a little visit. Pop & Gene went to get a hair cut then later went after Betty & got some groceries. Gene & Betty came over this eve, also Lee, Rose Ann & boys, Joe Frantz & girl friend.
SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 3, 1962 Went to Mass with Gene & Betty & had our throats blessed. Then this a.m. I wrote to Bro. John - finished the letter I started last night - also mailed checks for Great Plains Gas & Light & Power then we mailed them up at the corner mail box. Glenn & the boys came out while the girls were at Catechism & Pat was working. Betty also came over this p.m. & did the floors. Went over to Mary's for a little while and loaned them some black hats to wear to her father's funeral - I did my cleaning this p.m. My eyes burnt very bad this p.m. Gene & Betty cane in eve, also Dick & Reg & Eddie.
SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 4, 1962 Went to 7:30 Mass with Gene & Betty - home & got a good breakfast - then started dinner - had roast beef, noodles - green peas, potatoes, gravy - lettuce, pickles, jelly - strawberry short cake - I asked Pat & Glenn & family for dinner so we had a real nice time and played 2 games of cards, we each won a game. I made the prune cake - Betty got the recipe for me from the Grandma, up at Fairchild's - it turned out real good - In the eve we played cards had a good time.
MONDAY, FEBRUARY 5, 1962 Went to Mass and did my washing today - Oaim***** called up & we had a long talk. Pop rode to town with Betty to put our money in the bank and she also got our pills - Talked to Mrs. Mercer, also Anna Marie on the phone today. Worked some on my apron - mended some - early supper & quite eve as usual - no company.
TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 6, 1962 We didn't go to Mass as it was 10 below zero & Pop thought it was too cold - but had my appt to get my hair fixed at 9:00 a.m. so Pop took me up there and got me again a little before 11:00 a.m. - Gene over in the p.m., also Lillian & family stopped in - I read my Mass prayers & other prayers & got ready to go to our card party with Louise. Had a very nice time.
WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 7, 1962 We didn't go to Mass, it had snowed and it was quite slippery over the ice. Joann & Mike came out for a little while to borrow some bandages for Mike's ankle. Pat, Glenn & family came during the noon hour and brought their dinner - then P & G went to Cedar Rapids & left the three children here - I sure didn't feel very good so I lay down for a while & then sewed Pop's leather coat. Gene was over a little while - no company.
THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 8, 1962 Stayed home again today - it was still cold - made some sugar cookies this a.m. & also made meat balls for dinner - also took care of Debbie & Diane this a.m. Diane run hot water on her hand, we were very sorry. This p.m. I also read my prayers and worked on Louise's apron - also rested a little while. In the eve I worked on Gertrude's apron some - then Gene & Betty came over & we played cards. Men won 4, we won 3.
FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 9, 1962 We got up to go to Mass - but Pop decided not to go as it had snowed again. This am we got the door of the deep freeze cleaned up and now ready to defrost the deep freeze tomorrow. I also have done some mending on the sewing machine. Read Bro. John's very good letter so I decided I would write his letter this p.m. so we could mail it in the morning. In the eve Lib & Lyle, Dave, John & Rita came so we had a nice time playing cards. Pop, Gene & Betty took Pat & children home as Glen was getting car fixed.
SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 10, 1962 We didn't get to Mass today, as one of the tires on the car went back when they took Pat home. So home again from Mass as we have been ever since last Monday. We had a good breakfast and I mailed Bro. John's letter then Gene & Betty came over to help with defrosting the deep freeze - so we got that done before noon - also got the floors done. This p.m. I did my cleaning & watered the plants & went with Betty to Louise's to see the new house - it sure is nice. In the eve we went with Gene & Betty to ??????? had a very nice time.
SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 11, 1962 Went to 7:30 Mass with Gene & Betty & we also took Marilyn along. After our breakfast, got our work done up and then got things ready to take to Ed's for Rosemary's Birthday. Also valentines for the kiddies. Then Pat, Glenn & family came and had their breakfast here, then we went with them to Ed's and had a real nice time & the weather was pretty good. Maurice & Joan & family also came down and Mary had a big turkey dinner which was very good. We stayed until evening & came home with Dick & Regina & Eddie & got home around 9:45 p.m.
MONDAY, FEBRUARY 12, 1962 Went to Mass this morning, real nice for a change. Then we had a good breakfast this forenoon and got busy and started working with the house plants, resettling the ivy. Also set out 25 violets & about 10 geranium slips - hope they grow. So it was dinner time when I finished and I was quite tired in the legs. In the p.m. I sewed some on Louise's apron - got the basting finished. Then I worked on Gertrude's, no company.
TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 13, 1962 Went to Mass again today. Then I had quite a few telephone calls & I put up Pop's lunch so he could go with Gene. I had Pop take the curtains down in the utility room - so it look like I need new ones. I washed them, also did the other hand washing & mended my old green sweater and washed it - 2 batches of clothes today & afternoon I mended some - so both tired and nervous tonight - watched TV for awhile then Lee & & the boys came & we played cards.
WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 14, 1962 Went to Mass again, after breakfast I started watering plants. Pop went over to Betty's & got some of our young chickens from the deep freeze, so fried it for dinner and got a good dinner early so Pop could go with Gene to read meters. Got plants watered & treated before dinner. After dinner & dishes I looked at the paper - then did my ironing on the ironet(?) - then some mending & Pop hung up the curtains for me. Tired & nervous again.
THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 15, 1962 We went to Mass again today & had a very busy day - I wrote a letter to Alphonse - also baked apples for dinner & had plenty left from big dinner yesterday for today. I washed scarf's and then did my hand ironing & finished before we ate our dinner - in the P.M. I finished Louise's apron & in the eve got all the basting out & pressed it - Gene & Betty came over & we played cards - we didn't have very good luck.
FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 16, 1962 We didn't go to Mass as Pop thought the roads would be too icy - so we read our prayers at home. I wrote a letter and sent a Birthday card to Veatress. Then Lee & Roseann came & left the baby here while Roseann got a permanent & Lee took clothes to the Laundromat. Then when he came back I made dinner for them - then Roseann called & Lee got her & then I fixed Roseann's dinner for her. Betty was over before noon & did the floors. I mended this afternoon - after the folks went home. In the eve Dick & Reg & Eddie, also Pauline & Gerald & boys came.
SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 17, 1962 We went to Mass again today & I had started Bro. John's letter last night so wrote some more this a.m. & finished before noon & Pop & Kathy mailed it up at the corner - had a very good letter from Bro. John - Glenn brought the children out for us to take care of today. Lillian & John stopped in. We had good luck with the youngsters today & they were very good - started snowing after dinner - got real bad by night - Gene & Betty over in the eve.
SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 18, 1962 Well, it was a bad morning to get out. Gene got the tractor and opened the road to get his car out. Then Pop & I waded out through the snow to the road to the car to go with them - so we got a little dinner. Gene shoveled us a path for us to walk in when we got home - Gene brought over their chicken the I had them over for dinner & supper - and the day went pretty fast. Gene spent a lot of time grading out lanes and trying to make the tractor run. We played cards in the evening. We won 3 games, the women 2.
MONDAY, FEBRUARY 19, 1962 We didn't try to go to Mass - Gerald brought Catherine here so she could wait for the school kids to ride to school. I called the Drs. Office and made an appointment for Thursday at 3:00 p.m. Dorothy told me not to come out in the cold with my sore eyes. So I worked on my apron and got the star figured out and read my prayers. Rested a while this p.m. - watched TV. in the eve and worked some on my apron.
TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 20, 1962 Got up in pretty good time - didn't go to Mass - too much snow for Pop. We watched the astronaut go round the world or at least all we could see - very interesting. Louise was over for eggs - we sort of planned for our card party. I did my washing and dried the clothes , read my prayers & worked on apron in spare time. In the eve Lee, Roseann & the boys came - had a nice time. Little Logan has the chicken pox now.
WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 21, 1962 Home again today as usual - I got birthday cards ready to mail & to the G Joams - watered my plants - Leonard's got my onions for me - then in the p.m. Gene & Betty got some lard & our order from Sears - Marilyn called and asked us for supper Saturday eve. Quite eve, no company. Watched TV, worked on apron - called Bessie & talked to her.
THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 22, 1962 No mail & we didn't get to Mass either. This a.m. I read my Mass prayers then got a bunch of mission letters ready - after dinner worked on apron - read more prayers. Then wrote a pretty big letter to Sister. In the eve got ins. letter & telephone bill ready. So another quite evening all alone. Watched TV and worked on Gertrude's apron.
FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 23, 1962 No Mass again today - but so far the snow didn't come that they predicted. We watched TV quite a bit - the return of the astronaut Col. Glenn & his meeting with family & President Kennedy - Betty was over & did the floors - Pop shook the rugs - after noon I washed my sup-hose also my hair & put it up & read my prayers - started writing Bro. John's letter. In the eve Dick & Peg came over.
SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 24, 1962 No Mass again today. I was busy this forenoon . First I finished Bro. John's letter before the mail came - Phyllis stayed here & waited for Glenn & the children to get her. Then I watered plants, cleaned bowls - washed & waxed floor in bathroom, got spots off the kitchen floor - so I was about all in by noon. After dinner I got dishes done - looked over the papers & then we went to confession. When we got home I rested & read prayers. Then we went with Gene & Betty to the Leonard's for supper & the evening.
SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 25, 1962 Went with Gene & Betty to Mass - then Pauls came out here & had their breakfast - Then Pop & I had ours. Lillian & Catherine did the dishes - then Pat & Glenn & family & Phyllis came & they cooked their breakfast - Pauls then left & went to Eldons - Pat & Glenn left after noon & then Dad & I had lunch - in the p.m. Clarence, Wilma & Ann came, we visited & played cards - Then after they went I read more prayers - then we had our supper. Gene & Betty came over & we played cards.
MONDAY, FEBRUARY 26, 1962 Didn't get to Mass. Sort of stomach flu this morning - but took white medicine & it helped. Then in a.m. I got my bed spread tore into rags for rug & in p.m. I worked on the sheets - very interesting work so the time went fast. Pop went with Gene & Dick out to Betty's mothers & helped them on the ceiling - quiet evening. No company.
TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 27, 1962 We didn't get to Mass again today - so read our Mass prayers as usual. Lillian came out this forenoon & visited awhile as she had to go to Regina to help out at the dinner. I did my washing & drying. In the afternoon I sewed carpet rags & made some phone calls. Pop went with Gene to Betty's mothers farm - now he is awfully tired tonight and lay down right after supper. P.m. - Roseann & family came - we played cards. We won 2, the men 3.
WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 28, 1962 12 below zero here - we didn't go to Mass again - had lots of telephone calls this a.m. - made out check for Press Citizen for year & also wrote letter to Gertrude. Watered plants before noon in p.m. - sewed some carpet rags & got the ones sewed yesterday wound up. Had 3 of Pat's children here this p.m. while they shopped & went to sale - they got their new deep freeze - awfully tired after supper. Got a really big supper for Pop - he went out with Gene & Dick to work on Betty's mothers house. No company this eve.
THURSDAY, MARCH 1, 1962 I wrote to Bro. Paul. No Mass again today - it was 23 below zero - broke records all around the state I guess. We were nice & warm. I ironed & mended this a.m. and had Leonard & Marilyn's 3 little ones here while she shopped. In the p.m. I sewed more carpet rags, trying to do a little each day. Finished the bottom of Gertrude's apron - kept Pat's children while Pat & Glenn & Mr. Kasper went to the Rosary for Mrs. Rogers.
FRIDAY, MARCH 2, 1962 First Friday and we didn't get to Mass - I wrote to Sister Margaretta, sent light bill - also order for cloverine. Then I stirred up a batch of cookies - got letter from Bro. John & Sister M & read them - Pop took Betty to work - after dinner I baked the cookies & read prayers - Louise came for eggs and visited a while - then I sewed a few carpet rags then got our supper. Gene & Betty came over - I started on Bro. John's letter - Betty sick & couldn't play cards - Lyle's came & we played games - also Gene played.
SATURDAY, MARCH 3, 1962 No Mass again today. I finished my letter to Bro. John & wrote a short letter to Sister Margaretta - Glenn brought the 4 children out & something for dinner so I had them eat here too. After noon I did up the dishes, read prayers, wound up carpet rags & washed bowls - I also finished watering the house plants - then they came for the children & we got them ready to go. After they left Pop shook the rugs & I swept & dusted the floors. Then we had supper - Gene & Betty came for a little while.
SUNDAY, MARCH 4, 1962 Snowed a little in the night. We went with Gene & Betty to 7:30 Mass - Women's Sunday. Then home & had a good breakfast - I read up on the papers this forenoon. We had lunch at noon - then washed the dishes & read my prayers & then got Tom's card & gift ready - then it was time to go with Gene & Betty to Pauls for Tom's birthday. We had a real nice time - Louise & Carl & Charles also were there - go home around 10:00 p.m.
MONDAY, MARCH 5, 1962 No Mass again today - this a.m. I read my Mass prayers - got tucks fixed in G's apron. Tore up about 2 sheets for rags. In p.m. - I rested & read prayers then sewed carpet rags. Then Anna Marie came over for a little visit, after supper I finished sewing what I planned - got mail ready - Lee & Roseann & family came & we played cards. We managed to win one game.
TUESDAY, MARCH 6, 1962 No mass again today - after breakfast I cooked my chickens for our sandwiches for our card party tonight. Then Pop took me up to get my hair fixed - when I got home I got our dinner & then cooked another chicken to be sure we would have enough - then when all of it was done I took it off the bones & ground it - Louise came over a little before 5:00 & we got busy & made sandwiches & I got other things all ready - then she came after one after 7:00 - there were only 19 of us, we played 3 tables, 6 hands. Louise sat out.
WEDNESDAY, MARCH 7, 1962 We went to Mass this morning with Louise - Betty too - Then after we got home I did the washing and cleaned up things from the party & I washed spots out of the tablecloth -also ironed it. Today I watered plants & my legs sure got tired - I cooked a pretty good dinner. In the p.m. Louise came down & took Pop & I to the Norens - after we got home I wound up the rags that I sewed Monday - a good sized ball.
THURSDAY, MARCH 8, 1962 It was snowing again this morn - so Pop decided we better not try to go to Mass - so I made our breakfast - afterwards I read my Mass prayers & then did some hand washing & then sewed some carpet rags. Paul came & brought his lunch & ate it here. We had our dinner and I read more prayers again & then sewed more carpet rags up till time to get our supper - Leonard came over for eggs. We watched t.v. this evening & I sewed on G's apron.
FRIDAY, MARCH 9, 1962 Not to Mass again today - not a very good beginning for Lent - but I guess we have gotten over taking chances so we read our Mass prayers as usual. Betty came & cleaned & I got my dusting done. Pop took Betty to work - then in the afternoon we went down for the Stations - we took Helen M. home, we stopped first at Me Too Grocery and got our groceries & it was thawing quite a lot & not bad weather. After we got home I did some basting on G's apron - after supper Dick & Reg & Eddie came & Reg & Eddie stayed all night while Dick went to haul snow - Joe & girlfriend also here tonight.
SATURDAY, MARCH 10, 1962 We didn't get to Mass again today. I had Reg & Eddie for breakfast , Dick came home early - then he ate before they left. Then Glenn brought the kids here for the day - Phyllis had come earlier to take care of them so we got along pretty good - although I was awful tired - I guess from being up so late last night. Glenn got Pat after work - then they came out for a steak supper, Glenn had brought the steaks and other things this a.m. Gene & Betty also came for supper so we all enjoyed it - the played 3 games of cards - the men won 2 - us 1.
SUNDAY, MARCH 11, 1962 Went to 7:30 Mass with Gene & Betty - Marilyn M. also rode along - we had a good breakfast after we got home - then we started making a recording for Larry - then had our dinner - after dinner - dishes & then rested a while - then we finished our recording - then went with Gene & Betty to the Stations - after we got home we listened to part of the recording - then supper - then listened to the rest - Gene & Betty came over & we played cards.
MONDAY, MARCH 12, 1962 Didn't get Bro. John's letter. We didn't get to Mass. Pop thought the weather wasn't fit & it was snowing when we got up. We read our Mass prayers as usual - then I wrote a letter to Larry's & we got the recording wrapped up to mail - then dinner & read more prayers - then got ready to go to the Dr. BP 192/105 - then he sent me to an eye Dr. to have my eye looked at. I have infection in my eye & the other one seems to be getting it - have to put drops in every hour of the day.
TUESDAY, MARCH 13, 1962 No Mass again today - eye still pretty sore & Pop good in putting the drops in for me. The hearing aid men came out & tested Pop's ears - he was real well pleased & bought one - cost $329.00, $335.58 with tax and I am real happy about it. I sewed rags for rug this a.m. This p.m. I read prayers & sewed a little more - talked to the different girls on the phone & Bessie in the ???? says my eye looks better - no company.
WEDNESDAY, MARCH 14, 1962 We didn't get to Mass - so started early with my eye drops and read my Mass prayers then got ready to go to the Drs for 10:30 a.m. appt. Dr said my eye was much better but had to keep up with the drops & then get another kind of medicine to use four times a day - after dinner I wound up my rags into a ball & then wee went to the Novena - came home & had a quiet eve - no company.
THURSDAY, MARCH 15, 1962 Didn't get to Mass - Pop went with Betty out to her Mother's farm this a.m. and with Gene on farm meters this p.m. I went with Louise & Carl to Cedar Rapids - they took me up to shop for my new dress at Younkers & coat & hat at Sears. We ate our lunch at Kresege's & did some shopping there. Got home in good time - my ankles & legs were sure tired tonight - no company.
FRIDAY, MARCH 16, 1962 No Mass today - Pop went with Betty to the farm & then they came back early & she did the cleaning here, then waxed the bathroom and kitchen floors. Then we went to the Dr & had my eyes checked again - he said they were good enough that I didn't need to come back, but to keep on with the drops - but not so often on the one kind - home & had dinner & I sewed a few carpet rags & then we went to church for the stations & then Madden rode with us & we went out to Benners & got our groceries - Gene & Betty came over this eve - the first company since they were here last Sunday night.
SATURDAY, MARCH 17, 1962 Well. Pop said we better stay home from Mass yet today, maybe by next week it would be better. So I kept busy about all day with my chores of watering plants, cleaning bowls, dusting some - Gene was over here working on his car & Pop helped him some. Glenn & the kids brought the eggs out. I had Gene eat dinner with us as Betty was getting a permanent - in the p.m. we went to confession. In the eve Gene & Betty came over, she put up my hair & then Pauls came & we played 8 handed Euchre - 5 games - the women won 3.
SUNDAY, MARCH 18, 1962 We went to Mass with Gene & Betty - home & had a big breakfast - I read some prayers & sort of started getting things ready to go to the ball game played by the Old Timers of St. Pats - then Leonard's family came over & we had a nice little visit, then we had our lunch - I decided I didn't feel up to going to the game - so called Louise to see if they would take me to the Stations & then meet the folks there - Pop went with Gene & Betty. They came after me & we went to church - the folks were already there. St. Mary's won. We went to Wilma's good supper.
MONDAY, MARCH 19, 1962 We went to Mass this morning - sure seemed good to be back again - after breakfast we went down to the Drs office, my blood pressure was way high again - 224/108 - so now I have to slow up again & take it easy - so I have been today. We had a light dinner & I rested some. Anna Marie & Andy came over to visit awhile - then we got ready & went with Gene out to Pat's to help celebrate her 29th birthday & Jerry's 2nd birthday.
TUESDAY, MARCH 20, 1962 Pop got up & went to Mass, I stayed home & read my prayers. The we had breakfast. Auntie Rose came over for me to sew her apron strings & then she stayed a while & then the men came out with Pop's new hearing aid & fit it on him - she was quite interested & made an appt. to check her hearing next Monday p.m. Pop wore it until after supper. I feel some better - Arlene & Clarence came up - she brought my dress & skirt that she had hemmed up for me. Lyle & Libb came after & we played cards.
WEDNESDAY, MARCH 21, 1962 Pop went to see msgr? This morn & gave money. Pop went to Mass & I read my prayers then we had breakfast & later on I lay down & got to sleep a while. Betty was over & talked a little while Pop went down to pay the taxes - I got dinner & he dried the dishes for me - then I sewed a few carpet rags - Pop went to Novena - I read more prayers then finished up carpet rags - when he got home I had a pretty good sized ball. Anna Marie & Andy came over for a while - no company this eve.
THURSDAY, MARCH 22, 1962 Pop went to Mass - I stayed home & read my prayers - the Dr didn't get out today - misunderstanding - but we got through the day o.k. only one little set back. Phyllis, Tom & Catherine came out & brought their dinner here to eat - no school on account of Sub. State Tournament. Ronny surprised us by getting home this p.m. & for supper a priest brought some of the seminarians down. So he was at Gene & here for a little while. Phyllis stayed all night as she had to baby sit for Anna Marie Krall. Carl's? Family stopped in for a while on their way to take Ronny down for his ride home.
FRIDAY, MARCH 23, 1962 Got up in time to have breakfast for Phyllis before she went to school & we did the dishes - I read my Mass prayers while Dad went to 8:30 Mass - he came home & I got his breakfast. Then Betty came & took me to Mrs. Browns to get my hair fixed then she came back & cleaned the house & Pop went & got a hair cut - then picked up Johnnie & Linda & they were here for dinner & in the p.m. - after dinner I finished watering the plants and then Dr came & checked our blood pressure - mine was down to 175/84 Dads, 155/75. Lillian & the children stopped in for the kids - Louise came for eggs, after supper Pop went with Gene & Betty to church - I had to stay home. Lee, Roseann & the children came & we watched TV.
SATURDAY, MARCH 24, 1962 Pop went to Mass with Gene & Betty. I got washing started & read my prayers - after breakfast I kept at the washing, and also finished writing my letter to Bro. John. It took quite a while as I didn't get his letter today & I had expected to make some remarks about things in his letter - so I was slow at it - then Pop took it to the PO box & got the groceries at one - too. I was pretty tired by noon - so Pop did dishes for me - then I sat down and read prayers & did my different jobs by degrees. Pauls family & Gene & Betty stopped tonight - we watched the end of basketball finals Regis of C. Banidstown?????? Played 2 games of cards.
SUNDAY, MARCH 25, 1962 We went to 7:30 Mass with Gene & Betty. Then after we got home we had a good breakfast then Pop & I got the snack sets & silver ready for Bessie's anniversary party for Margaret & Bob - the dishes & Betty came over & helped get my slip fixed for my dress - then we had lunch & I rested until 2:30 p.m. & then started to get ready to go down to Margaret & Bob's reception. We had a real nice time. There were 19 of us there - Paula brought their supper & ate here & then went to mission. Pops, Gene & Pauls went to the Stations
MONDAY, MARCH 26, 1962 Pop & Betty went to Mass - I stayed home & read my prayers. I rested around an hour this a.m. - got a good dinner - fried chicken - also got some white rags tore for to finish my rugs - after dinner I rested again for a long time - so feel pretty good this eve - we had a good supper - I watered the plants after I got up - Anna Marie & Andy was over for a while & Baslinagel and Webster stopped in to see how Pop was getting along with his hearing aid - after they were down to see Auntie Rose.
TUESDAY, MARCH 27, 1962 Pop & Betty went to Mass & I stayed in bed until 8:00 a.m. I spent most of my day resting as usual & sewed a few carpet rags today - Betty did our ironing and Gene brought it home - otherwise no one comes - Pop went with Gene & Betty to church - still no company. Helped Gene make a meat loaf.
WEDNESDAY, MARCH 28, 1962 Pop & Betty went to 7:30 Mass and I stayed in bed until 8:00 a.m. and spent the day as usual --getting a little work done - made a meat loaf for dinner - not feeling too good - Auntie Rose over for a little while in the p.m., then later in the p.m. I went outside for a little while - Mrs. Yoder came over, also Anna Marie & Andy & Marilyn & children were over for eggs - so all visited a while - in the eve Pop went to church with Gene & Betty.
THURSDAY, MARCH 29, 1962 Pop & Betty went to early Mass - so I got up & had early breakfast with Pop - then read my Mass prayers & didn't feel too good. Louise came over for a while & brought me some flowers and visited. In the p.m. Catherine, Phyllis & Tom were for a while, until Lillian came after them. I felt better this afternoon and this eve - Pop went with Gene & Betty to church last night of the mission. Maurice & Joanne's baby girl born today, 7 lbs 11 oz, 21 inches - Janet Louise.
FRIDAY, MARCH 30, 1962 Pop went to Mass alone - I stayed in bed & read my Mass prayers - after breakfast I sewed up the rest of my blue & white carpet rags - Betty can over to clean - then I rested off & on a little today. Lillian came with the school kids & stayed until 5:00 p.m. & then took our car & drove up to Mrs. Browns to get her hair cut - then we had supper & Roseann & Lee & boys came in the evening - we played cards. Men won all the games - Pop went to the Stations this p.m. & to Hi Vell for groceries.
SATURDAY, MARCH 31, 1962 Pop went to Mass & I stayed in bed & read my Mass prayers. Then we had breakfast & I started my letter to Bro. John & it took all forenoon to finish it as Glenn & the kids came with eggs - the hearing aid men came and were here for a while. Then Louise called so I finally finished it and we took it to the corner to mail it. We put add in the paper to rent the Aluminum house today as Augustines moved out. We had quite a lot of calls but so far no one rented it. I washed & dried a batch of clothes this p.m. - I got a little rest between phone calls. Gene & Betty came over this eve, also Louise & Carl came, we played cards - the men won all the games.
