MONDAY, OCTOBER 1, 1951 We went to Mass - and after breakfast Dad took Joann
& Mickey down to town & to the dentist for Mickey. I took care of the boys,
made 8 big glasses tomato preserves. In the P.M. we made Joann's sauerkraut
- then decided to dress a part of our old hens. So told Ben when he came it
was satisfactory with him. Pauls came over & we got through in good time - they
had a gal. of ice cream to eat, Pat went to school, also got her new coat.
TUESDAY, OCTOBER 2, 1951 We went to Mass - Pat too as she didn't have to go to work until 11:00 A.M. - she had 11:00 to 7:00 today. After breakfast Lillian came over & we canned chicken, got 35 qt. - Ed & Dad helped Paul move his garage - so Ed & Mary were here for dinner. Mary had been to Bernices to get her hair fixed but helped us around noon - After dinner Ed & Mary went to Eldons to help pick apples, then brought us some, picked ripe ones. In the P.M. Lillian & I made her sauerkraut & then with what was left over I put up 11 jars for myself this eve. Gertrude called and said Jimmy was in the hospital.
WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 3, 1951 We went to Mass - Mulherin, Tommy & Ronny also went today, Feast of the Little Flower - They brought Alan to church so we brought him home with us - I did a big, big, washing today - and finally got done - sent Little Flower letter & thanks. Dad went to a sale; then worked some on garage -after he got, home. Pat went to classes this eve & then to Junior Farm Bureau meeting. Len brought her home.
THURSDAY, OCTOBER 4, 1951 We went to Mass - Gene also took Tommy, Ronny & Joyce - I wrote letters to Bro. John, Irene & Wilma - Pat came home at noon - she cleaned up the house some and mopped the kitchen floor - After dinner Dad hurt his nose & lip by a rim on the tire blowing off as he was putting air in - we went to the Dr. but he said it would be alright. My blood pressure 1761. Went over & helped Bens get rug put down in kitchen. Dad & I went to Novena.
FRIDAY, OCTOBER.5, 1951 First Friday - Dad & I & Pat went to Mass - Gene took Ronny, Tommy & Joyce, 2nd for the boys, first for Joyce & Eds 3 boys - I wrote letter & card for Aunt Frances & Mary Agnes & husband. Ed came this morning & he & Dad went to Riverside & also to a sale. I ironed some today. In the eve Dad & I went with Pauls to Eldons to help pick ducks.
SATURDAY, OCTOBER 6, 1951 We went to Mass - Dad & I & Gene & Pat, Ronny, Tommy. After breakfast Dad & Gene went after the plow that Dad bought at the sale - Ben didn't go to Eds so he took Joann & Lillian down town for their shopping. I went to confession before Mass this morn - I took care of children & got a good dinner. We finished the ironing today - Pat had to go to work at 3:00 P.M. so Dad & I took her down & then shopped a little - it got to raining real hard. Ben & Joann got me a sweater.
SUNDAY, OCTOBER 7, 1951 Leonard took Pat to 6:00 Mass - Dad & I - Maurice & Gene went to 7:30 Women’s Sunday & the opening of the Forty Hours - we got home rather late & Ben had left the 4 little folks & went to 9:00 Mass - but they were alright. Bens had breakfast here and I browned the chicken for her - Pauls & Carls & us were all invited to Bens for late birthday dinner for Ben, Kenny & Joe - had a good dinner & a nice time, came home in good time, went to church & got Pat - went early again. Eds, Pauls & Bens all went & left the children here - Pat, Leonard and Gene out this eve.
MONDAY, OCTOBER 8, 1951 Pat & Len went to early Mass and went in time to receive Holy Communion at 6:20 a.m. Dad & I & Gene & the boys went to 7:15 Mass - Gene served - we stayed for the sermon. I worked around here - then did a good sized washing - then swept & mopped the floors - after Gene came home he took Pat & I down shopping. I exchanged my sweater & got 2 new dresses & a pin. We went early to devotions again - after taking Pat down for classes in the eve.
TUESDAY, OCTOBER 9, 1951 Pat & Len went to 6:30 Mass but went early again for Holy, Communion - Ben & Joann & Babe also went, Dad & I went to 7:15, Eugene, Ronnie & Tommy to 8:00. I did up the work, baked a cake & Eliz & boys came, she helped me good with the work & to get all my house plants set out in cans & pots -Lillian came over & did all the ironing - Dad finished hauling the lumber from Carls. Last day of Forty Hours. We all went again tonight. Bens took baby, Eds & Pauls & 4 of Bens stayed here.
WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 10, 1951 We went to Mass - Pats day off so she went too - Joann came over, also Lillian & helped clean the bedroom for me - they did a fine job - also got the churning done - Dad went down town & attended to business - Bens here for supper & to watch the fight on television.
THURSDAY, OCTOBER 11, 1951 Pat home until 11:00 a.m. so went to Mass with us again. She helped the choir sing - I did the washing - Lillian hung most of them up for me - went to Novena at 3:00 then shopped & then to beauty parlor at 4:30 got shampoo & hair fixed -kept Bens children this eve - as they celebrated their 7th anniversary.
FRIDAY, OCTOBER 12, 1951 We went to Mass - then after breakfast we got ready for our little trip to Neb - to visit John & Minnie - we left here about 10 min till 10:00 and then went to Hills - got Wilma & Tony - left Hills around 10:17 - we stopped at Oskaloosa & ate our dinner & shopped some from 12:00 to 12:50. We got to Minnies around 8:00 P.M. After going out on the wrong highway & driving around 25 mi. extra.
SATURDAY, OCTOBER 13, 1951 Gertrude is 26 yrs. old today - We got up and went to Mass -rested a lot today - We went down town for a little while in the afternoon, then got to bed early -
SUNDAY, OCTOBER 14, 1951 Up early and went to 7:00 a.m. Mass - Wilma went to 10:00 for High Mass and Benediction. We went down for the dinner & bazaar at 1:00 P.M., had to stand in line until 2:00 P.M. - dinner was good - I bought a nice pr. of embroider pillow cases - Minnie & John had company from David City -she served strawberry preserves on ice cream, also had cookies - We had a very quiet eve -
MONDAY, OCTOBER 15, 1951 We didn't get to Mass, only Uncle John - as Wilma & Tony were going home - Dad & I & Aunt Minnie took her to Wahoo to catch the bus - which left for Omaha - We shopped in the grocery stores, then visited Eva a while then came home past Malmo - the Booths and the old farm home - In the P.M. we cooked some pears - canned them for me to bring home - also got some linoleum changed around in the kitchen for Aunt Minnie - quiet eve -
TUESDAY, OCTOBER 16, 1951 We went to Mass - right after breakfast we went to Fremont taking Aunt Minnie to Dr. Hernte the eye doctor - they found ingrown eyelashes that had hurt and inflamed her eye - Dad & I shopped, got things for the folks at home - In the P.M. we got some storm windows cleaned & put up - Minnie's tulips set out - pears picked up & also some flower plants taken up for me-- cold & chilly - another quiet eve -
WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 17, 1951 We went to Mass - then after Mass & breakfast I wrote to Bro. John & some cards - In the P.M. we went to Malmo & then on to Francis Booths, had a nice lunch & visit - got some plants - In the eve we went to the block rosary at Slopes -after we came home we ate our lunch -
THURSDAY, OCTOBER 18, 1951 We went to Mass at 8:10, drove up to the church - pretty chilly this morning - Temp 32 when we went - quiet day, we got things sort of packed up & ready to go home tomorrow. In the P.M. Minnie & I went to Social Club - I won in bingo once - got bobby pins.
FRIDAY, OCTOBER 19, 1951 We went to Mass in the chapel - this morning it was nice & warm - we left for home at 9:15 a.m. - stopped for something for our lunch after leaving Highway 6 - but didn't stop to eat until we got to Fontanelle around 12:45, left at 1:15 P.M. - stopped for gas at Winterset at 2:00 P.M. - stopped at Oskaloosa and ate our lunch from 4:00 to 4:15, got home at 6:05, more fast travel closer to home, found everything O.K. - Eds, Pauls & Lyles here in eve. Drove 337 miles today, altogether 827 miles on our trip, averaged around 24 mi. to gal gas.
SATURDAY, OCTOBER 20, 1951 We went to Mass at 7:30, the ladies said they had missed us at Mass - Pat home until 3:00 today. I did quite a good sized washing - it got quite rainy in the P.M. so had to finish drying them on the rack. I rode over in trailer to take the gifts for Joann & the children - then came back with them as they were going to town - they were here for dinner & supper - In eve Joann went down with Ben as he had to be watchman from 6:00 until 10:00. Dad & I went to confession.
SUNDAY, OCTOBER 21, 1951 We went to 7:30 Mass - Dad & I & Moe - Leonard drove the Nash to 9:00 & took Pat & Gene, Marilyn & Roger Mulherin -Ronny & Tommy, also Ben - it was such a rainy morning Joann & the children didn't come out. Also she wasn't feeling good. Pat went to work at 11:00. Dad & I & Moe, Len & Gene went to Pauls for dinner - In the P.M. Moe & Ben went hunting. Ben got a fox. Dad & I & Pauls went with Eds to see a farm down by Conesville - Bens here in the eve to play cards - Kids went skating this eve - Leonard took them. Ben used Gene's car -
MONDAY, OCTOBER 22, 1951 We went to 7:30 Mass - Pat at home today - Ben brought the family over early as Joann wanted to do some shopping - she & Dad went downtown in the a.m. - she did our ironing in the P.M. - Ben got the spring for his car & fixed it here this eve - Dad hauled rock for Ben's road - the second load, he broke an axle so Gene had to go after him with the tractor. Worked with my plants this a.m.
TUESDAY, OCTOBER 23, 1951 We went to Mass - I did quite a large washing - but it turned out to be such a rainy day that I didn't get any of them hung out - put them on the racks in the front room after we got the rug turned around. Pat worked from 7:00 to 3:00. Dad & I went early & took her in the eve. She & Leonard went to a show. Dad worked most of the day trying to get the pickup fixed up.
WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 24, 1951 We went to 7:30 Mass - Pat too as she had to go to work from 9:00 to 5:00 today - Dad worked at lumber - then he & Lillian went downtown before noon. In the P.M. he got the pickup finally fixed and then hauled out the rock. After school Dad, Gene, Lillian & her little folks picked up the pears over at Bendas. In the eve Dad & X & Bens went to Pauls for his birthday - a very nice time. Gene went to practice. Pat & Leonard went to Junior Farm Bureau party at Tipton.
THURSDAY, OCTOBER 25, 1951 We went to Mass - Gene didn't have to go to school until around 10:00 a.m. so came home for breakfast - I mailed the water heater & ? rod to Aunt Minnie. Pat & I got the ironing all done this P.M. - but it was 7:00 P.M. when I finished - then Len & Pat - Dad & I went to Novena - L & P went to confession. When we got home Lyle's family were here looking at television.
FRIDAY, OCTOBER 26, 1951 We went to Mass - Pat too as she didn't go to work until 11:00 A.M. She put my hair up for me, after I washed it - I cleaned up some around here today & picked some bean seed & the sage - We also got the peach trees from Neb. set out & the evergreens from Colo. set out - I canned 2 qt. pears -got things ready for butchering hens tonight. Pauls & Bens came to help, only had 8. Geralds also here this eve. Pat & Gene to Halloween dance at school -
SATURDAY, OCTOBER 27, 1951 We went to Mass & Ronny & Tommy - I put the chicken on to cook - then baked 2 cakes, 4 large, 1 small mince pie, 1 lemon pie - and got dinner - In the P.M. Lillian & Joann took the chicken off the bones & helped me get it canned. I had 16 qt. - 5 qts. broth - Ben took Joann & baby out to the Dr. this eve - babe is overweight - Joann is supposed to go to the hospital for blood count next week -
SUNDAY, OCTOBER 28, 1951 We went to 7:30 Mass as usual - Pat went to 6:00 with Ben's - she had to work. Gene & the boys went at 9:00. Wilma came in the P.M. - had Tony & Connie with her - then Gert & Nick & Jimmy came down - here for dinner - In the eve Dad brought Bens boys over for Hop-a-long, later Ben & Joann came over for supper - Paul & Ben went hunting in the P.M. Ben accidentally shot a man, one stray pellet, hitting him while Ben shot at duck decoys - Ben didn't tell anyone, only Paul -
MONDAY, OCTOBER 29, 1951 We went to 7:30 Mass - Pat too as she worked 9-5 - I did my washing and it took quite a while - pretty good drying day -left some out overnight - Pat went to school this eve as usual. Heard on radio this a.m. and all forenoon about Ben's accident, talked to Joann but she never mentioned it -
TUESDAY, OCTOBER 30, 1951 Went to Mass as usual - Pat home again this forenoon - had to go to work at 11:00 a.m. - Lillian washed - then when Pat had to go to work at 11:00 Dad took her down - Lillian & I and the children went along and shopped a little - I got the pictures ordered for Christmas gifts - I got the ironing all finished today.
WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 31, 1951 We went to Mass as usual - Dad got Joann & the children -then Lillian came over & gave Joann a permanent - they were all here for dinner - Ben stopped in for the family so fixed his tire - then they stayed for supper too - Dad & I went to Novena, then took Pat over to the skating rink - as she had been at classes - Gene went to practice - Leonard went out with his friends.
THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 1, 1951 Dad & I & Gene & Leonard went to Mass at 7:00 today, took Ronny & Tommy - Pat went with Paul & Lillian to Mass in the Nash at 6:00 A.M. as she & Paul had to work - Lillian & children & Joann & children were here for dinner - also Eds family - In the P.M. Ed, Mary & Lillian went shopping - Ben got home from work in good time - then Ben & Joann hurried over to dig potatoes & Dad went to help them - Maurice & I & Gene got a few carrots & beets in, not near all of them -
FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 2, 1951 Dad & I took Pat to 5:45 Mass. We went to Mass as usual, I wrote to Laurence and sorted over the pears and then in the P.M. Dad & I went downtown - made some visits at church -and then got the groceries - got home in good time. Pat helped with the supper - I started with the pears & altogether got 18 qt. canned - by working very late. Pat took care of Bugarellis babies tonight - Leonard took her and got her - cold, cold weather.
SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 3, 1951 We went to Mass - that is Dad & I, Gene, Leonard & Maurice -very cold, only around 11 above zero here. After breakfast it started to snow - we brought in a few heads of frozen cabbage - also got the trailer load of potatoes unloaded -into the cellar - Leonard took Lillian downtown. Buelers Store on fire, lots of damage done - Bens left the children here while they shopped with Mickey & Kenny. Gert & Nick came down-here for dinner - they went to the football game & took Gene on the extra ticket - Gert & Nick & Maurice went out to Amanas for supper - I sure was tired. Pat got done at 10:00 a.m.
SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 4, 1951 Only 7 above zero this morning. Dad & I & Maurice went to 7:30 Mass, Women's Sunday - Leonard, Pat & Gene to 9:00 -C.Y.O. Communion Sunday - Ben's went to 9:00 but didn't stay here - Ben went hunting with Lincoln - I forgot to make the cake for Sodality so made it after we got home from Mass -then Leonard & Maurice took it down - I worked until 3:40 before I got done - Pat off today - Sort of quiet day, no company until eve - then Pauls came over a little while to see television & Ben & Joann went to a show & left the children here - Pat & Leonard went to Vinton with Carl ? -took Delores along -
MONDAY, NOVEMBER 5, 1951 We went to Mass - Pat too as she didn't have to go to work until 9:00 a.m. I just worked around & straightened up the house - wrote letters to Aunt Minnie & Velva - rested some in the P.M. - so tired today - got ready for the basketball game. St. Marys won 53-45 - over Parnell. Lillian & the children were here for dinner - Lillian & Dad went downtown. Made my Holy Hour 11-12.
TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 6, 1951 We went to Mass as usual, Pat too as she didn't go to work until 9:00 A.M. I did a big washing - hung out most of them but silks, sox, starched clothes, as the weather wasn't too bad - In the eve everyone home. We kept Ben's boys while they went to a show - Len went to the Dr. this P.M. - he is supposed to have an operation on his knee.
WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 7, 1951 We went to Mass - I wrote card to Mary, letter to Elizabeth & Sister Margaretta - In the P.M. I canned 7 qt. more pears - In the eve we went to basketball game early as Gene played in the first game & they won by 24 points, the big team won by 17 points - We enjoyed the games very much - Leonard elected Vice President of Junior Farm Bureau -
THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 8, 1951 Dad is 69 yrs. old today - We went to Mass as usual - We got the ironing done today - then I made a good birthday supper for Dad - In the eve, we went to Devotions - Eds, Pauls & Bens all came - Joann & Lillian brought cakes so we had coffee & cake & cool aid for the children. Dad got box candy from Louise, $2.00 from Bens, $1.00 from Eds, $1.00 from Elizabeth, 3 pr. sox from Pauls - 3 pr. sox from me -Venetian blinds from Maurice & Leonard, candy from Pat. We went downtown before noon - Pat went to class -
FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 9, 1951 We went to Mass - we went downtown again before noon as Pat went to bookkeeper class - I exchanged Richards shirt - got a larger size - In the P.M. I baked cakes, also made fruit salad, all afternoon getting ready for tonight - Eds, Pauls, Bens & Lyles all came home & helped dress the 16 ducks -Pauline & Gerald also came later & Pauline helped too - Pat worked 3 to 11:00 P.M. again.
SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 10, 1951 We went to Mass - then had sort of a busy day - finishing cleaning up the ducks so that they could be taken to the locker - Bens left the children while they went shopping this a.m. & to Dr. Oxford this P.M. then after they got back she helped me finish the pies & get supper & mopped the kitchen floor for me - Lillian also came over & helped peel the apples for my 7 pies - Pat worked to 11:00 tonight. S
UNDAY, NOVEMBER 11, 1951 Maurice & Gene went to 6:00 Mass - Paul & Lillian went with them - Dad & I & Leonard & Pat went to 7:30, Ronny & Tommy went with us - Men's Sunday - Pat had to go to work at 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 P.M. Eds came & left things for the hunters dinner, then went to 9:00 Mass - LeMoyne Junior, Joe & 2 brothers & another man came up to go hunting with Ed & Paul. We had them all for dinner - Mary & Lillian helped me out with the work & food - they only got one pheasant -Maurice & Gene went with Ben & friends - they got 8 pheasants.
MONDAY, NOVEMBER 12, 1951 Maurice moved out this morn & is going to stay in Cedar Rapids now - We went to Mass - Joanie Klein stayed all night with. Pat & went with us. Pat has to go to work at 7:00, she got off at 10:00, practiced with Mary Rita at the church for next Sat. wedding, then went to bookkeeping class & then home with Len - Joann & the children spent the day with us, as Ben had the day off and went hunting. Joann helped me can 17 qt. of pears. In the eve we went to the ball game. St. Marys played Oxford. Small team won 17-4 - Big team 52-34.
TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 13, 1951 We went to Mass - as usual. A rainy morning but I washed anyway - it cleared off pretty good - so I got most everything hung out but the silk things, starched clothes, hankies, white sox etc. etc. I was awfully tired & my left knee so stiff I could hardly get around - All the children home this eve. Pat had to practice for a wedding before she came home -
WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 14, 1951 We went to Mass as usual - Pat to work at 7:00 with Paul -Dad & Lillian went downtown this P.M. took the donations to the Sisters for their deep freeze - we sent 2 ducks, 2 chickens, 2 pork roasts, 2 qt. frozen corn, 3 qt frozen green beans - In the eve Dad & I - Paul & Lillian went to the PTA potluck supper - had a nice time - Dr. Leinfelder gave the talk - Pat went to class - Gene to practice.
THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 15, 1951 We went to Mass as usual - In the a.m. I wrote cards to Wilma & Gertrude - sick card & letter to Aunt Minnie & letter to Bro. John - In P.M. I finished canning pears 132 more qt. making a good 60 qt. this year - In the eve Dad & I went to Novena - we waited until Pat got through with her meeting - Bens here in eve -
FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 16, 1951 We went to Mass - In the a.m. I wrote letter to Verna. Lillian over & we visited - call from Mrs. Knoedal - she wanted the chicken loaf recipe - I mailed it to her that eve - I worked at the ironing but didn't get it finished - Lyles here this eve - Pat practicing for weddings & then went to school dance -
SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 17, 1951 We went to 7:30 Mass - Pat rode down with Leonard when he went to work - she played for 2 weddings today - one at 8:30 and one at 10:00 A.M. bought her new Bulova 17 jewel watch today - also other new things - she came home for dinner -then went back at 2:00 P.M. to practice with Charlie Boyd for the Sunday music- he brought her home. In the eve she went to show with Joanie.
SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 18, 1951 Dad & Maurice, Paul & Lillian went to 7:30 Mass - I went to 9:00 to hear Charlie B. sing & Pat play - very nice music -Leonard drove the Nash - Pat, Gene, Ronny, Tommy, Ben & Joann & Mickey all went along - Joann & the children came in the P.M. when Ben went hunting with Maurice & Paul. They stayed for supper too & played cards in eve with Paul & Lillian. In P.M. Dad & I & Lillian went down to visit school.
MONDAY, NOVEMBER 19, 1951 We went to Mass - then Eds came after breakfast & left Alan, went down to see about signing up for their new farm - they were here for dinner, went to Rummels funeral in the P.M. -Lillian went downtown with them. Bens went downtown right after he got home from work - we kept the children - then went to basketball game. St. Marys won in the last few seconds 49-47 over Dubuque team. Pat started on her new job at Eichers flower shop.
TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 20, 1951 We went to Mass - then Dad went over after the cement mixer at Carls - Ed came and helped Dad put the cement floor in the new garage - they got through before 3:00 P.M. I did the washing in the P.M. Leonard worked after supper to 12:30. Pat went to a meeting - Gene worked on his book reports -kept Bens boys while they went to show - Carls came & left Bu ? oil stove & got the wheelbarrow.
WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 21, 1951 We went to Mass - Pat has been able to go this week but leaves at communion time - as she has to be at work at 8:00 A.M. Dad took Joann to the Dr. this P.M. - she said she had 3rd. degree burn on her foot & had to go to the hospital -so they got Ben at his job, he took her in about 5:20 P.M. Mary took Benny & Lillian took Stevie. We have the rest of family - Lillian helped me make 52 qt. mincemeat. I made 7 pies & Lillian 1. We went to basketball game - St. Marys beat Waterloo 55-40.
THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 22, 1951 Thanksgiving. Dad & I - Maurice, Ben & Gene went to 7:30 Mass - Leonard & Pat went at 8:30. We had a sorrowful Thanksgiving as Joann was in the hospital. It was a rainy day & ice freezing on everything - but Eds came down & Pauls came over & with Ben & his family. We had a big dinner, 4 ducks & lots of other good things. Eds & Maurice went home early on account of icy roads. All the children at home tonight. Ben went to see Joann both this afternoon & evening.
FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 23, 1951 We went to Mass - Pat helped the choir out - Leonard & Pat & Ben all at work - Gene at home today. I wrote letters to Sister M. & Bro. John, also sent money for our dance tickets, sent cards to Myrtle, Gertrude, Wilma & Eliz. In the P.M. I got 2 letters ready for cards - In the eve Pauls & Lyles came and Gene went to practice. Leonard went downtown.
SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 24, 1951 We went to Mass - Pat went to work - the children & I got cards ready to send to Joann at the hospital. Ben & Gene went hunting in the P.M. Got 3 pheasants & a rabbit - we had the rabbit for supper - dressed one whole pheasant for Bens & put in deep freeze - Pat went skating with Carl - a long hard day of work.
SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 25, 1951 Dad & I - Maurice, Ben & Gene, Paul & Lillian went to 7:30 Mass - Leonard & Pat went to 9:00, forgot to take Pauls boys along - so Paul took them down - a bad day again, raining & sleeting so the men didn't get to go on their big hunting trip they had planned. Pauline & Gerald were here for dinner. Ben & Pat went to hospital in P.M. Ben again at night. Pat & Gene went skating in the eve.
MONDAY, NOVEMBER 26, 1951 We went to Mass - I didn't wash as I had other things to do & Lillian used the clothes line - Dad got Joann from the hospital between 1:00 & 2:00 P.M. - she is better but they didn't want her to leave so we thought they better stay here for a few days - Ben & Joan n went down town shopping a little in the eve - Pat went skating with Billy B?.
TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 27, 1951 We went to Mass - then I did the washing today & didn't get a very early start so washed until about dark & hung up lots of them by the yard light yet ? Ben & Joann went to a show - Pat went to the PTA dance with Tommy - had a good time.
WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 28, 1951 We went to Mass - then I did some writing & got mail ready, letter to Sister, Pauline & Gerald, helped Joann with fixing her skirt on her dress, also worked around with the clothes yet. Ben & Joann went down to the grocery before supper. Ben & Joann did the dishes. We got ready to go to the bball game - St. Marys beat St. Wencelaus 64-42.
THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 29, 1951 We went to Mass - Pat stayed until after communion & went on to work - We did the ironing today, Joann helped me in the afternoon - Dad & I went down to the Novena in the P.M. then we all went to supper over at Pauls for Phylis' birthday -Bens went home after supper. Pat went skating with Billy Ball. I finished the ironing after we came home.
FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 30,,1951 We all went to Mass. Eugene is 17 yrs. old today. I cleaned, up the house and took me about all day - Leonard took a load of basketball players to Dubuque in the Nash - it was awful foggy but they made the trip safely. Gene & some of the reserves rode in our car - Pat & Dad & I were alone, all evening -
SATURDAY, DECEMBER 1, 1951 We went to Mass - Dad feeling bad yet today with his head cold - so I called the Drs. office & got an appointment for him - his B.P. was 145 - Dr. sprayed out his head & swabbed out his throat & gave him pills - Lyles were here in the eve - also Bens & Pauls children & Jimmy as Bens & Pauls went to Oxford to the Dr. with Joann & baby, also Tommy had a bad ear trouble. Gert & Nick & Jimmy came down for supper - then went to ball game -
SUNDAY, DECEMBER 2, 1951 Women's Communion Sunday - Dad & I & Maurice, Paul & Lillian went to 7:30 Mass - Pat, Len & Gene & Rondy & Bens went to 9:00. Dad not feeling better in the a.m. - but felt better in the afternoon - Gene took Bessie & I over to Aunt Ells today, we had a very nice time & a good visit. In the eve Ben's, Paul's & Wilma's & families were here & played cards - Len, Pat & Gene went skating -
MONDAY, DECEMBER 3, 1951 We went to Mass - I cleaned up the house - baked cake today, mended some - In the a.m. Dad & I took Lillian & children downtown - got the pictures I had ordered - Dad got Maurices car number - In the eve we went to the bball game -Mrs. Mulherin went along. St. Marys won over Dyersville 60 to ? reserves also won their game.
TUESDAY, DECEMBER 4, 1951 We went to Mass - then I did the washing today - it sure was big - as I did extra sheets, 10 all together - not too good of a drying day - Pat had the P.M. off, washed & ironed some of her clothes. She & Leonard & Delores went with Carl to Vinton to see a basketball game - Had a fresh cow today -nice heifer calf. Dad feeling much better.
WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 5, 1951 We went to Mass - Today Ben & Joann went downtown in a.m. -Lillian went along, I kept the 8 children, starched, clothes & hung them up on rack to dry - Ben went hunting in the P.M. out at our old farm - Joann & the children stayed here. Ben got another pheasant. They went home before supper - We went to bball game. St. Marys beat I.C. of Cedar Rapids 31-24. Made my Holy Hour tonight. Pat & Len went to Farm Bureau after game -
THURSDAY, DECEMBER 6, 1951 We went to Mass as usual - Ben got the tractor & trailer and hauled dirt around his house today and this P.M. came over & helped Dad on the roof on the shed, it was awful windy -Joann came over & helped iron - Lillian ironed my kitchen curtains & put them up - Dens left baby & Benny & went home for supper - they came back & left the others & went to confession & to visit Gladys in the hospital. Dad & I went to Novena.
FRIDAY, DECEMBER 7, 1951 We went to Mass as usual - I sure felt pretty sick from my cold - but managed to carry on - Dad had to take Lillian & Tommy down to the hospital again. I got some mail ready in the forenoon - in the P.M. I made 2 batches cupcakes for the bake sale & a cake for over Holy day & Sunday. Dens went downtown before supper. Ben plowed his garden & ours today - Pat went to City High basketball game tonight with Carl -
SATURDAY, DECEMBER 8, 1951 Holy Day - Dad & I - Moe & Pat went to 7:30 Mass - Len & Gene, Tommy & Ronny to 9:00 also Dens - after breakfast Ben & Joann went to Muscatine to shop. They got home about dark - they had stopped to visit at Reubens - he isn't feeling so very good these days - Dens here for supper - played cards a while after supper, went home in good time. I feel bad yet from my cold so didn't go downtown - a snowy afternoon.
SUNDAY, DECEMBER 9, 1951 Dad & I & Maurice also Paul & Lillian went to 7:30 Mass -Men's Sunday - the others went to 9:00, Eds visited for a while after Mass - then we all went to Pauls for dinner -early P.M. Dad & I & Moe went to Hills to the school festival. I bought a cap for Pat - Dad got a couple of cakes - then we went to Wilma's new home - Maurice took some pictures & we had supper there - Home early, Dens, Pauls & Lyles here in the eve -
MONDAY, DECEMBER 10, 1951 We went to Mass as usual - after breakfast we went downtown - Dad went to the dentist - got the cavity packed up where he had the tooth pulled Sat - been bothering him so much - I shopped - got along pretty good - home in time for dinner. Dad finished putting the roof on the shop - went back to the dentist again and I shopped a little more - then early supper - Leonard & Gene went to Muscatine to baseball game -St. Marys won 59-58 - Pat went to school - Dad & I took her down - I shopped some more -
TUESDAY, DECEMBER 11, 1951 We went to Mass - when we got home Joann & the children were here - she went downtown shopping when Dad went to the dentist - then stayed here the rest of the day - Lillian came over & she & Joann helped me get a good dinner for the cornpicker men - We of the corn husked - around 100 bu. was all, very poor crop his year - In the P.M. I washed, hung them all in on the racks. Joann & Lillian each made a batch of candy for Laurence. In the eve we got his pkg. ready to mail. Pauls all over here this eve -
WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 12, 1951 We all went to Mass - I got a congratulations card ready for Donna & Joe, then also finished the research letter - after dinner Pat got Bro. John's birthday cake ready to mail & I got Wodahodskys pkg. ready & Dad took all down to the P.O. We all went to the basketball game in eve - Pat to her classes first - St. Marys beat St. Pats C.R. - 60-42 -reserves also won their game.
THURSDAY, DECEMBER 13, 1951 We went to Mass - nice day, 10 above zero - Dad went down to the dentist, Lillian went along to shop, then came back & took Joann, Mickey & Benny down to the Dr. - as the children were sick - I kept Steve, Kenny, Joe, Johnie, Kay & Phylis -wrote letters to Bro. John, Minnie & Laurence - Joann didn't get the medicine in the a.m. so had to call the Dr. & go back downtown & get it in P.M. - Benny feels awfully bad -they were also were for supper - Dad & I went to Novena -Pat & Len went to choral practice - Gene stayed home with Pauls kids - Paul & Lillian went shopping.
FRIDAY, DECEMBER 14, 1951 We went to Mass - having a big snow storm but we got through O.K. - about 9 in. already in the morning & still snowing -We got the Ins. money off in the mail - also sent Christmas card letter to Mrs. Wod - I finished the ironing & worked late at night fixing socks ? Gene went to practice -
SATURDAY, DECEMBER 15, 1951 We went to Mass - only the Nash would start this a.m. or all day - until in the P.M. Leonard got B.K. Mercer to come down & pull his & Gene's car - so Leonard could use his this eve - Pat & Maurice went downtown with Len - and all went to a show - Dad & I went late in the P.M. shopped some, got groceries, then went to confession - Ben & Joann went to Oxford this eve to the Dr. - left the children here -
SUNDAY, DECEMBER 16, 1951 They say the temp was 19 below last night. We went to Mass - that is Dad & I & Maurice & Paul & Lillian, Ronny, & Tommy in Leonards car as the Nash wouldn't start - Len, Pat & Gene went to 9:00 Mass, also Eds, they stopped in after Mass -Ben couldn't get his car started so Paul went over & helped him - get it going, then they went to 11:30 Mass - we kept the children - Bens stayed here for dinner & supper - Joann not feeling very good.
MONDAY, DECEMBER 17, 1951 We got the Nash going,- but Gene didn't get his going so we took the children to Mass & to school. Gene served - Ben worked today. It started snowing while we were at Mass & kept getting harder, not quite as cold - but very disagreeable out. Dad & I went to town - Dad to the dentist - I to the post office and shopping a little - We went again in the P.M. - He to the dentist again & I mailed the last of our pkg. to Bro. John, Aunt Minnie, pictures . Len playing bball tonight. Pat went to watch - Gene went to practice.
TUESDAY, DECEMBER 18, 1951 We went to Mass as usual - but Gene did all the chores & we were quite late - I worked at my cards & wrote some letters - Had Pauls 3 children here this a.m. as Lillian went downtown shopping while Dad went to dentist - In the P.M. Ben & Joann went downtown - twice left the children here - they stayed for supper. Pauls were over & they played cards with Dad. Len drove the Nash to Waterloo for the game -
WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 19, 1951 We went to Mass as usual, got on time this morning - I worked on my cards & letters again this morning. Ben came over & helped Dad put up his chimney & haul over a stove -then in the P.M. went with Leonard to work at the carpenter job. I washed late in afternoon & early eve - got clear played out - Pat went to classes in eve - Gene went to practice -
THURSDAY, DECEMBER 20, 1951 Overslept this morning so was a little late for Mass again. Dad milked the cow after we got home - Ben helped carpenter again today & was here for dinner - Lillian came over & washed some woodwork for me. Ben got his family at noon -they were here in P.M. & for supper as Ben & Joann went shopping after supper. Pauline & Jerry came out in the eve. Pat & Leonard went to Junior Farm Bureau supper & Gene drove to Oxford for game. St. Marys won both games, 26-18 -55-54. Dad to the dentist again, got temporary filling put in a tooth.
FRIDAY, DECEMBER 21, 1951 Bro. John is 23 yrs. old today - We got to Mass on time this morn - but couldn't get the Nash started, battery down, so had to use Leonards car - wrote letter to Bro. John, card to Mauguerite. Ben & Leonard worked & I had them both for dinner. Pat went with Carl to City High basketball game -Len also went - mopped & waxed dining room floor - Dad & I went downtown this P.M.
SATURDAY, DECEMBER 22, 1951 We went to Mass - Leonard & Ben still working all day -Ben's car still stuck in a snow bank - so he walks in & out. I had a very busy day working ahead for Christmas -Lillian went downtown in the a.m. with Dad & got the boys' hair cut. I made my pies for Christmas & Sunday - Moe, Len, Pat & Gene went downtown shopping.
SUNDAY, DECEMBER 23, 1951 Dad & I & Maurice went to 7:30 Mass - Len went at 6:00, Pat & Gene went at 9:00. Dad went over to Ben's & stayed with the children while Ben & Joann walked out & went to 10:15 Mass - We wrapped more gifts today - Pat got some rest - Dad & I went down to confession in the P.M. In the eve Moe, Len, Pat & Gene went skating at the rollercade. I wrapped gifts & got Msgr. card ready.
MONDAY, DECEMBER 24, 1951 We went to Mass - Moe too - after breakfast M & L went downtown - also Dad & I as I still had a few things to buy -Ben had trouble getting his car started so Dad & Gene helped, they got out by around noon - eat dinner here - left the children while they went to Oxford - did their shopping & went to confession - I worked hard & long today getting things ready for Christmas. We opened our presents in eve -Saw part of midnight mass over television from Boystown Nebr. Leonard wrapped presents about all P.M. - Dad & Moe worked on the light wiring installed my new flourescent light over the sink.
TUESDAY, DECEMBER 25, 1951 Christmas day - We all went to 6:00 Mass - Pat had to play at 10:00 so Leonard took her back to church then - Bens & Eds went at 9:00. We had a big wonderful day - Eds 7, Bens 7, Pauls 7, Libbs 8, Wilmas 6, Geralds 2, Gertrudes 3, us 6 - 46 in all for dinner, for supper we had Louise 3, Eds 7, Pauls 7, Bens 7, Wilmas 6, us 6, - 36 for supper. Everyone feeling pretty good & a wonderful lot of presents for all -children all real good - men folks enjoyed the card games, also the ladies played in the eve. I was tired, sleepy.
WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 26, 1951 Dad & I & Pat went to Mass - Gene stayed home & did chores and then went down & served at a wedding at 9:00. I worked around about all day - just picking up things & getting straightened up some around here - and feel fairly good after our big day - pretty cold. Leonard didn't work today. Pat & Leonard went to a wedding dance.
THURSDAY, DECEMBER 27, 1951 We all went to Mass. Ben came over & got the car to go downtown to sign up for his unemployment pay - then he got stuff to make them a medicine cabinet - I did the washing, got supper - Dad & I went to Novena - took Aunt Frances along - Dad got radiator back this P.M.
FRIDAY, DECEMBER 28, 1951 We all went, to Mass - Ben & Dad went to a sale this P.M. - I wrote card to Ann - letters to Gertrude & Minnie - ironed in the P.M. but didn't get done as had to get ready to go to the baby shower for Lola Mullherin Beckwith. Gene went to bball practice. Pat went out to Carl Fredericks for supper. Dad & Leonard stayed at home.
SATURDAY, DECEMBER 29, 1951 We all went to Mass, another long, busy hard day - this a.m. I cleaned the kitchen floor good & Gene waxed it for me - In the P.M. I made a big supper & ironed as much as I could, finished after supper about 8:45, then I mended - Pat out with Billy Ball - Len out with Kabela. Pauls over for a while - I worked way late. Pretty decent weather yesterday & today, thawed some today.
SUNDAY, DECEMBER 30, 1951 Dad & I & Maurice went to 7:30 Mass - Len went to 6:00 and Gene & Pat, Ronny & Tommy & Ben & Joann & Mickey all went to 9:00. Joanie Klein came home with Pat & was here for dinner & supper - It was a real nice day - I wanted to go to Reubens real badly - but Dad didn't want to so we didn't go - instead we went to Louises for a little visit, took Pat & Joanie down to see Sister Mary Anita Esther but she wasn't there - they rode home with Moe, Len & Gene who had been down playing basketball. In the eve they all went skating. Dad went over to Pauls & played cards.
MONDAY, DECEMBER 31, 1951 We all went to 7:30 Mass for the last day in the year - Pat went to work - Len didn't feel like working so got Ben to go in his place - Dad & I & Moe went downtown this a.m. - Dad got a hair cut - his new Christmas hat - and car numbers for Nash - I ordered my free gift hose - In the P.M. I cooked up cranberry sauce, peeled quite a few apples to go in with them - did some hand washing for Pat & myself - Pat & Len out celebrating New Year. In the eve Dad & I Maurice & Gene, Paul & Lillian went to Holy Hour.
