April - June

July

SUNDAY, JULY 1, 1951 We all went to 6:00 o'clock Mass today, as it was the day for Laurence's return trip home - then we had a good breakfast, did the dishes & left for the airport about 8:00 A.M. - got there by the time the plane came in - we got some pictures of him getting on the plane etc - after the plane left we watched it a while, then left the airport around 9:00 A.M., drove to C.R. - saw where Marie Tone lives and the Collins plant where Maurice works - then got some groceries for a quick dinner, came home by Mt. Vernon, looked at Carls farm, got home about 11:00 A.M. Gene went fishing with Ben, Mickey & Kenny. In the eve we kept Benny while they went to a show at drive in.

MONDAY, JULY 2, 1951 We went to Mass - after breakfast Pat & I went to the garden & hoed until about noon - it was nice & dry & hoed good -Eugene mowed all the alfalfa today - after dinner, Pat & I did all the ironing left over from last week - & after supper, Dad & I hoed again - Joann & children here for dinner & supper - Dad took Joann & Joey down to the Dr., they give him a penicillin shot for the swollen glands on his neck. Dad brought the new beef home from the locker -

TUESDAY, JULY 3, 1951 We went to Mass & Holy Communion. Pat played the Requiem & had to sing it all alone, only for a little help from Gene -Had over an inch of rain last night so wet alfalfa & lots of the weeds we hoed out are growing again - Ben brought Joann & the children over - so Dad could take Joann & Joey back to the Dr. again - Pat got her room cleaned & beds changed around again - so we slept downstairs tonight.

WEDNESDAY, JULY 4, 1951 We all went to Mass & Holy Communion this morn - then I got started at the big washing - had 14 sheets - sort of cloudy ugly day & so cold - I guess I was the only lady in church without a coat on - Pat & Gene & Ronny went to carnival in P.M. Pauls came this P.M., were here for supper - In the eve Maurice took Pat & Gene to the carnival - Dad & I were alone. I ironed until about 10:30 P.M. Very cold 4th of July. Pauls brought 2 pigs, also mess of cherries.

THURSDAY, JULY 5, 1951 We went to Mass - as usual, hurried home - and got ready to go to Mary's with Louise to help dress chickens - we did 20 for Louise and 30 for Mary and they both got them down to the locker & wrapped up - Dad & I went to the Novena in the eve - Ben & Joann & kiddies were over, they got some raspberries picked for some jam - Renters paid their rent -I made my Holy Hour tonight. Pat did the ironing & got a good supper.

FRIDAY, JULY 6, 1951 First Friday - Pat played the Requiem today. We didn't get to go to Hettricks wedding - as Dad had to rake the alfalfa - it got pretty warm - we picked the peas and got them all put in the deep freeze, 21 pt. making 74 pt. all together for this year. In the eve Ben hurried home so he could help with the hay - but the baler didn't come - then they went home & got ready & went to a show - Lyles came up this eve -Pat & Gene went to Sodality dance.

SATURDAY, JULY 7, 1951 We went to Mass - Maurice too - as he didn't have to work today. After breakfast I went downtown with Maurice - did some banking & shopping - got Hettricks wedding gift & myself a new plastic table cloth for dining room. We had the balers for dinner - it was an awful warm day - up to 90 - In the P.M. Dad took me down to the Dr. - B.P. 180/100 -weight 1851 - so gained 21 lbs. the last 3 weeks - not feeling too good either. Pat picked 4 pails beans, we got most of them put in deep freeze - Bens here for dinner & supper - Mr. Miller helped with the alfalfa in the a.m. Mr. Lenoch helped with hay in P.M. from 1:00 P.M. to around 7:00 P.M. - got 633 bales all together, 273 on ours - 360 off of Bendas, 180 for us.


SUNDAY, JULY 8, 1951 We all went to 7:30 Mass - a very hard rain - around 4:30 A.M., then more rain again while we were in church & on the way home. Eds & Pauls stayed for dinner. Mary brought ham & a good cake - so really helped us out today - Bens came over about 4:00 P.M. - and then stayed for supper - they hurried home before the storm came up. Leonard drove downtown to see how much damage was done.

MONDAY, JULY 9, 1951 We went to Mass as usual. Gene served - Pat & ? helped Jackson who played the Mass - funeral for Mr. Kuberick - but the Turhomans had the music - I did the washing, got done early in the P.M. - also got all the ironing finished - Pat & Leonard went to Farm Bureau meeting. Pat joined up -Joann came over in the P.M. & got her peas ready & put in the deep freeze - she had 8 pt - they stayed for supper - as Ben went fishing -

TUESDAY, JULY 10, 1951 We went to Mass - Pat helped Jackson with music - We defrosted refrigerator, baked cake, pulled weeds, etc. etc. Dad & Gene worked at the pit over at Lenochs - was pretty warm so he didn't work in the P.M. We went to Aunt Annas instead & had a nice visit. Maurice brought home his new car - a 1949 Nash - cream color. He took Bens, Dad & & Gene for a ride. Ben went to union meeting. Pat, Joann & Mickey went to a show. Wilmas came in the evening - also Nancy Falls -

WEDNESDAY, JULY 11, 1951 A cloudy damp morning. We went to Mass - after breakfast Ed came & I went home with him & helped Mary & the boys dress 20 chickens, we got along fine, and got through in good time. It was another rainy day - got home about 6:00 P.M. A quiet evening, Maurice worked later.

THURSDAY, JULY 12, 1951 We went to Mass as usual. I wrote letter to Aunt Minnie & Pat wrote to Betty W - we got the beans picked before dinner & only had 2 pails, canned them in the P.M. - had 12 qts. -Dad & I went to Novena - Bens were over for a while - also Lyles came out, after visiting Edith at the hospital. Pat did some weeding & hoeing.

FRIDAY, JULY 13, 1951 We went to Mass - then after breakfast Dad & Gene took Pat down to play for a funeral - so they were gone until after 11:00 A.M. - did up the morning work - wrote to Gertrude -and in the P.M. We picked the peas and got them put in the deep freeze - 9 pt more make 83 pt for this year - In the eve Eds came - E & M went to see Edith & babe - Richard is 13 yrs. old today -

SATURDAY, JULY 14, 1951 We went to Mass - as usual and then Dad took Joann down to shop - and he got our groceries - We worked hard all day cleaning up in the house - In the late P.M. Dad & I & Pat went down for confession - I was very tired & nervous today - Ben worked at Eds - they were here for supper - took Joey to the Dr. in the eve - got another penicillin shot -


SUNDAY, JULY 15, 1951 We all went to the 7:30 Mass but Pat & Gene went to 9:00 Sodality Sunday - Pauls came out after Mass - Bens & Kenny Kabela were here for dinner in the P.M. - Maurice took Ben & Joann - Dad & I, Leonard & Kenny - to the stock car races -at Hawkeye Downs in Cedar Rapids - We enjoyed them very much home by 5:00 P.M. - In the eve - Gertrudes & Gerald's stopped in for a while.

MONDAY, JULY 16, 1951 We went to Mass - rained a little - but it cleared off - so we got our late cabbage set out, also some beets - Chinese cabbage - radishes planted - Louise came out with about a bu... of beets so helped her run the pressure canner so she got 26 pt. I washed in the P.M. Louise hung them out for me. It got pretty rainy - so took the starch clothes in the house & hung them on the rack - Pat went with Marilyn & Roger downtown - to a show. Marilyn & Roger & Louise & Charles here for dinner. Worked late tonight.

TUESDAY, JULY 17, 1951 We went to Mass - Pat played Requiem & sang alone - after breakfast I wrote to Bro. John. Joann & the children came over - she put 5 pts. peas in the deep freeze. Pat & I hoed & weeded, it really was hot in the P.M. Dad took Joann & Joey over to the Dr. at Oxford - he gave him another pen. shot - In the eve Dad went down to our Dr. & got a penn. shot for pleursy - his B.P. 130. I worked in garden until dark - & then in the house icing cake - making cottage cheese & beet pickles & folding clothes until way late.

WEDNESDAY, JULY 18, 1951 We went to Mass. Pat played the Requiem - no help for singing again but Gene helped a little - we went downtown after Mass, got Len's pants from the cleaners & also got groceries - Mary & Don, Dean & Alan came while we were still eating breakfast to help butcher chickens today - then Dad got Joann & children & Louise & Charles came out after dinner - we did 30 before noon & 48 in the P.M. and put 73 in the locker to be wrapped & frozen - kept 3 for ourselves & sold 1 to Louise & gave Joann 1 - Ben helped after he came & went with Dad to the locker. Pat helped good, then went to Junior Farm bureau swimming party.

THURSDAY, JULY 19, 1951 We went to Mass, low Mass today - We worked around here, and in the garden in the forenoon - also picked the beans & right after dinner canned them. We had 20 qt. beans 1 qt carrots. Bens went to Pauls this eve & got 15 chickens -Lyles were up for a little visit - Dad & I went to Novena -

FRIDAY, JULY 20, 1951 My 60th birthday. We went to Mass, Pat played the Requiem -and she & Gene sang it. Pat & I did the ironing this a.m. -after dinner weeded the beets & pulled some, canned 6%Z pickled beets - We hoed in the flower bed whenever we had time. We helped Ben & Joann dress 13 chickens for freezing - Gert & Nick & Jimmy came this eve to stay until Sunday -Pauls & Eds & Lyles also came this eve -

SATURDAY, JULY 21, 1951 We went to Mass - Pat had to sing & play the Requiem alone again today - Gene went corn tassling. Dad & I & Joann went shopping this a.m. - got our pictures from Kent - cost $98.94 or $112.94 all together. All are very good. Joann helped me sort them all out for everyone. Ben worked at Ed's today - Pete & Joanie went to a show - Joanie stayed all night. Gert & Nick - Maurice - Leonard & Gene gave me an electric fan for birthday.


SUNDAY, JULY 22, 1951 Leonard went to 6:00 Mass - Dad & I & Moe to 7:30, Pat & Gene & Joanie, Gert & Nick to 9:00. We all went to Pauls for my birthday dinner - had a very nice time & it was a lovely day - all the children & grandchildren there but the 3 distant ones - We got home in fair time after riding around the country with Moe - had Bens & Nicholas & Gordon Secrest for supper. Pat went to show with Bob this eve -

MONDAY, JULY 23, 1951 We went to 7:30 Mass - Gene didn't get to serve his time today, as he had to go corn de-tassling - he worked 10 hrs. today - We did a big big washing here - Pat helped hang them out for a while - then had to go down to Mercy to get instructions for nurses aides training at 12:00 noon. Pauls here in the eve - Ben's left the children here & went to a show.

TUESDAY, JULY 24, 1951 We went to Mass - Gene de tassling again today - I hoed for 12 hrs. this a.m. Pat played for a funeral & then went shopping for her shoes & hose - I sent a sick card to Minnie & also paid for box of cards - In the P.M. I hoed for a while before supper & Pat went to the hospital from 12:00 on to about 4:00 P.M. No company this eve - got to bed a little after 10:00, hoed until dark -

WEDNESDAY, JULY 25, 1951 We went to Mass as usual. Gene gone to de-tassel. Pat stayed down to go to the hospital between 9:00 & 11:00 a.m. I hoed over 1'z hrs. - then came in & wrote letter to Bro. John. Pat went downtown with Pauline this P.M. They got me a nice pocketbook purse for my birthday - I hoed more this evening - and also stayed up rather late. Mailed the pictures to Bro. John, Sisters & Laurence.

THURSDAY, JULY 26, 1951 We went to Mass after taking both Pat & Gene to work at 7:00 a.m. - I worked in the garden again today - and hoed then later in the P.M. & just before supper a while I ironed -some of the easy clothes on the ironer. Pat went out with Glen Kasper tonight. Dad & I went to Novena - I stayed up rather late again. Len took Gene skating. Had quite a shower this eve.

FRIDAY, JULY 27, 1951 We, that is Dad & I went to Mass after taking Pat & Gene to work - I worked more in the garden as usual - then Pat & I both ironed before supper - and got it done - Lyles & Pauls both came this eve - Bens went to a show. A pretty warm day again -

SATURDAY, JULY 28, 1951 We went to Mass as usual. Pat got off from work long enough to play a funeral Mass at 9:00 A.M. Dad & Moe & Joann went downtown - I did quite a good sized washing to help out on next weeks wash - In the P.M. Dad took Pat & I shopping and also went to confession. Bens here for supper. Pat baby sat at Lenochs -

SUNDAY, JULY 29, 1951 Leonard went to 6:00 Mass & took Pat - as she had to go to work at 7:00. Dad & I & Moe & Gene went to 7:30. Gene went to confession - Pauls were out for a while in the A.M. We had a fairly early dinner - then Maurice took Dad & I & Ben & family - We went driving to Muscatine & Fruitland, then stopped a while at Reubens - Bens here for supper. Louis Milder also here for a while, also Dietschs.

MONDAY, JULY 30, 1951 We went to Mass as usual, took Pat & Gene to work at 7:00, then after breakfast Dad hoed a while. I fixed the vinegar for pickles - then did a fairly good sized washing - it was a good drying day - In the eve. Bens came for beets - I cleared a row on onions - wrote to Bro. John. Len took Pat & Gene roller skating.

TUESDAY, JULY 31, 1951 We went to Mass as usual after taking Pat & Gene to work -Pat was supposed to have the day off - but had to work for another nurse's aid - I got Bro. John's letter mailed - then went with Dad over to Ben's place & helped hoe potatoes all forenoon - In the P.M. I canned 6 qt. applesauce & had about 2 qts. more for eating - In the eve I hoed a row of onions in the garden. Pat baby sat for Carol lee at Yoders - Len went swimming, then he & Kenny washed their cars & then went away again.

WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 1, 1951 We went to Mass - after the usual hurry of getting Pat & Gene to work at 7:00. After breakfast Dad & I went over to Ben's place & finished hoeing that first patch of potatoes. In the P.M. Dad went after Pat. I hoed in the onion patch until about 2:30, went out again after supper - then Maurice helped me & we pulled them all, then cut the weeds. We also watered the pickles & the flowers - Pauls were here - also Bens for a while. Pat went to Junior Farm Bureau meeting.

THURSDAY, AUGUST 2, 1951 We hurried to get Pat & Gene to work, then on to Mass as usual - Sort of a light, rainy morning - so didn't work outside but picked my nicest gladiolus for church - We took them down in the P.M. - Also left the pictures for Msgr. & Fathers Schmitz & Meyers. We signed the papers & was paid $300 for letting the light co- cut out trees & set light poles through our land for a high power feeder line. Eds here for a while this a.m. brought eggs for Bens. Also came out this eve after going to Novena & to confession. Dad & I also to Novena this eve - We sent for Gene's shoes, Pat's Social Security card.

FRIDAY, AUGUST 3, 1951 We went to Mass & took both Pat & Gene to work at 7:00 A.M. Dad got some apples this morning - so I canned 12 qt - by working quite late - Pat helped a lot after she came - but I was really poohed out - Lyle's came this eve - also Paul & family.

SATURDAY, AUGUST 4, 1951 We went to Mass as usual today. Maurice worked - Joann and children were here - she did her shopping this morning. I did a good sized washing. I went downtown this P.M. to the Dr - B.P. 164/90 weight 185 - we stopped & got Pat - on the way downtown - also did some shopping - she helped me out good this eve - Ben worked late at Eds - Gene & Len went to a show -

SUNDAY, AUGUST 5, 1951 Pat went to 6:00 o'clock Mass with Ben & Joann - she had to work - Dad & I & Maurice went to 7:30 Mass, Women's Altar & Rosary Sunday - Leonard & Gene - went to 9:00 Senior Sodality Sunday - We had dinner in good time - I went to the hospital in the P.M. & visited a little with Geraldine White Morrison early in the eve - Dad & I went to Nichols to the chicken supper - also visited at Aunt Anna's - saw lots of friends in Nichols - Pat with Bob tonight. Made my Holy Hour - Bens at Eds today

MONDAY, AUGUST 6, 1951 We went to Mass - Pat also as she is working 3:00 P.M. to 11:00 P.M. today - I did a pretty good sized washing, they dried very good - sun was sure hot - Gene still de tassling - Maurice, Dad & Gene got me over 2 bu. apples to can tomorrow - Lyles came out for a while this evening -

TUESDAY, AUGUST 7, 1951 We went to Mass and Pat had to play & sing the Requiem alone this morn - no one else showed up - We canned 28 qt. applesauce - a hard day's work - but Pat helped so good - her day off - Dad took Joann downtown this a.m. as she had the baby's picture taken, then she helped us with the apples in the P.M. They took the boys to Tiffin for hair cuts.


WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 8, 1951 We all went to Mass together once again - Pat & Gene sang the Requiem alone today - I wrote to Gertrude, also Bro. John - Rec'd returned letter from Larry today - so sort of worried - I sent information to Mrs. Mahan to be put in Catholic Messenger with our picture - Eds came - getting ready to start on their big trip tomorrow - Ben & Joann went to Tipton Fair to see races this eve, left children here.

THURSDAY, AUGUST 9, 1951 We went to Mass - Pat & Gene sang the Requiem again - no one else there - When we got home from Mass - Lyles & children were here - Joe stayed with Eldon's. They left here in good time & we got along fine all day - I ironed in the P.M. Pat went to work at 3:00 P.M. but went downtown at 1:00 as Dad went to a sale - Bens left for Eds at 4:50 P.M. Dad & I & Gene went to Novena - Gene served - Dad & I went after Pat at 11:00 P.M.

FRIDAY, AUGUST 10, 1951 We all went to Mass, Marilyn went along - I wrote to Verna today, also a letter to Aunt Minnie - Pat went to work again at 3:00 P.M. as usual - I worked around here, ironed my dresses and we got supper in good time - I went with Dad to get Pat -

SATURDAY, AUGUST 11, 1951 We all went to Mass - Rose Ann went along. Pat & Eugene played & sang the Requiem. I washed in the a.m. - the girls cleaned up the house. We also canned 6 qt. dill pickles and baked cake & cup cakes. I did the ironing, really was tired - Pat worked from 3 P.M to 11 P.M.

SUNDAY, AUGUST 12, 1951 Leonard took Gene - Rose Ann, Marilyn & I to 6:00 o'clock Mass - Maurice, Dad & Pat to 7:30, then she had to stay for the 9:00 Mass & take care of the nursery - she had Alan, Phylis, Johnie M & Margaret Ann Milder to take care of -Pauls went to the Cedar Rapids Fair & took Marilyn & Rose Ann, Tommy & Ronny along - we kept Joyce, Catherine, Phylis, Johnie besides the 3 little Frantz boys. Maurice left around 1:00 P.M. for his trip -

MONDAY, AUGUST 13, 1951 A little shower this morning but cleared off before we came home from Mass - Mass at 7:15. Marilyn went with us. Gene served - Pat played & sang the Requiem - I washed and also got all the ironing finished but was awfully tired - as we also canned 15'2 qt. peaches & the girls, Marilyn & Rose Ann went to 4-H club banquet at 6:00 at Jefferson Hotel. Pat went to work at 3:00. Millers moving out today -

TUESDAY, AUGUST 14, 1951 We went to Mass. Rose Ann went along - Pat played & sang again - We finished the 2 bu. peaches today, got 282 qt. more - making 44 qt. in all - Pat went to work at 3:00 P.M. The girls helped me good. I mopped the floor before supper & after supper, Dad & I & Gene went to Novena - Ben & Joann & 3 Milder boys also came.


WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 15, 1951 Holy Day. Leonard took Gene, Marilyn & I to 6:00 Mass -then Dad took Pat, Rose Ann & Joann & the 3 Milder boys to the 8:00 Mass - the girls & I wrote to Eliz. & I wrote to Mary - Eliz & Bro. John. We had 17 for breakfast & also for dinner. Dad took Joann & Gene & 3 Milder boys downtown in A.M. In P.M. took Joann to Dr. at Oxford & Kenny, Joe & I went along, bought 3 bu. peaches on way home - Pauls here in eve started to move. Bernice & Clem here for ??? Ben went to union meeting.

THURSDAY, AUGUST 16, 1951 We went to Mass, Marilyn went with us. Sent a card to Wilma. After breakfast we got started at the peaches and canned 30 qts - then afternoon we canned 22 qts more - so made us 52 qts for one good days work - Pat worked from 3:00 P.M. till 11:00 P.M. as usual - Dad & I got her -

FRIDAY, AUGUST 17, 1951 We all went to Mass - Pat played & sang the Requiem again today - Gene had to serve. After breakfast we made & canned 13 qts. of dill pickles - heated the vinegar on the others, then went to the fair. Dad & I & Pat & Gene left the Frantz children at Eds with Joann. Fair wasn't very good - we got home in good time - then I canned 14 qt. tomatoes for Joann - also canned 2'z qt. soup & 2 pt. sliced cucumber pickles. Pat & the girls went to a show.

SATURDAY, AUGUST 18, 1951 We went to Mass - Pat played & sang the Requiem, probably for the last time now - as her hours change for work again next week - We canned up the pickles, 11 qt. heated up the vinegar on Joann's - then I did quite a large washing. Also in the P.M. we canned up the last small bu. of peaches in 2z hrs. got 23 qt. I mopped the floor after supper - also ironed slips for Pat & Marilyn & dress for Rose Ann. Pauls & Bens here in eve.

SUNDAY, AUGUST 19, 1951 Dad & I & Marilyn & Rose Ann went to 7:30 Mass - Bens also went - but left their boys here. Pauls went at 9:00, took Pat & Gene & left all theirs but Tom & Ronny & Alan here -No company today - Paul used the pickup & hauled 3 loads of stuff - Gene helped him - Carl & Louise & Charles & Gerald & Pauline company in eve. Pat & Gene had been to the rosary for Mrs. Frank Kabela - Pats last night work, Dad & I got her -

MONDAY, AUGUST 20, 1151 We went to Mass in good time as Pat had to go to work at 7:00 & Gene serve - Rose Ann went with us - Rainy day today so couldn't wash - I canned Joann's pickles 2 qt. 5 pt. and then we did the ironing in the eve - Pete & Gene went to a show - Len took them - Pauls came, left Ronnie & Tommy -Lyles & Eds got home from trip so Lyles took their family home. Leonard didn't work so went to funeral - Len & Gene helped Bessie move in P.M.

TUESDAY, AUGUST 21, 1951 We went to Mass early. Then after Mass - before Dad even ate his breakfast B.K. came & bought the tractor - mower & cultivator. Gene got Joann & children - Dad took Joann downtown to get her groceries and then he bought his Ford tractor & mower. I did our washing, got done early P.M., then helped Joann can 26 qts tomatoes. Ronnie & Tommy got enrolled at St. Marys for this years school & Gene got some books sold & got his book list. Bens here for supper, Eds here in P.M. - then came back in eve - brought me a beautiful crucifix from Mother Cabrinis shrine - Pat went to Pauline Sueppels surprise birthday party.


WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 22, 1951 We went to Mass - I wrote letters to Bro. John and Gertrude & sent clipping of our picture also baked a cake for the movers tomorrow, and cleaned up after the canning of yesterday - Dad got his Ford tractor and mower today - In the early eve Dad & I - Pat & Gene went to W. Liberty Fair.

THURSDAY, AUGUST 23, 1951 We went to Mass & then to the grocery store - when we got home Joann & the children were here, also all of Eds but Richard as he, Ed & Mary had gone to help Pauls move - Joann helped me out good, then Elizabeth came up & helped too and I sure needed her - We had 33 for dinner & 18 for supper -Eldons, Lyle & Bernice all helped move - In the P.M. Joann rendered the lard - Elizabeth fixed her housecoat and I ironed - quiet eve - Dad & I & Gene went to Novena.

FRIDAY, AUGUST 24, 1951 We went to Mass, as usual - I wrote card to Aunt Anna - I washed lots of qt. jars & started in getting apples ready to can - working quite late. Pat helped real good to put them in jars - Lillian also helped get some ready - anyway we got 35 qt. canned - Pat went to a dance at Mayflower -

SATURDAY, AUGUST 25, 1951 We all went to Mass - Dad & I - Pat & Gene - after breakfast started at the apples again - Pat & Gene & Ronnie all helped some - Pats day off - Joann also helped put the last ones in the jars - we got 46 qts. today - should have 123 qts. new applesauce. Dad went with Bens to town this a.m. In the P.M. he took Bens & Lillian to a sale - Len took me down - I went to Dr - B.P. 150 over 85 - weight 1811 lb. best yet -then shopped a little & went to confession - Dad & Pat & Gene came after me - Maurice came home from his trip about 5:30. Pat baby sitting at Bugarellis tonight.

SUNDAY, AUGUST 26, 1951 Dad & I - Maurice & Leonard went to 7:30 Mass - Pat & Gene went with Mullherin to 9:00. Dad & I - Gene, Leonard & Moe all went to Ben's for dinner, also the Dietschs. Pat went to Bulgarellis for baby sitting job, was there 8 hrs., then went with Pauline S - in the eve - Pauls & Bens were heroin the evening & played cards with Dad & Maurice - I had a pretty good rest today *- but still tired. I broke the right lens in my glasses from batting a couple of flies.

MONDAY, AUGUST 27, 1951 We went to Mass as usual - Pat rode with Paul to work this morning - then Lillian came over & did her washing here this a.m. I got an appointment for 9:00 a.m. & got my eyes tested. Gene also got his driver's license today, then he took my glasses down to get the lens cemented in & so could wear them until my new ones come - In the P.M. I did our washing. Pat & Gene went skating - Gene took his car -Yoders came home from their trip.

TUESDAY, AUGUST 28, 1951 We went to Mass as usual - Mrs. Lenoch washed & hung her clothes over here - In the a.m. we went down & signed over the place to Pauls - they paid down $3000 and the rest is to be paid at $50.00 per month - I ironed some this P.M. but am awfully tired - Pat canned up some of the lard to put in deep freeze.

WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 29, 1951 We went to Mass - Pat went with Paul again to work - I wrote letters to Minnie & Velva - as usual busy -

THURSDAY, AUGUST 30. 1951 We went to Mass - then I left my glasses to have the lens put in - pretty hard getting along without them. I asked Mrs. Fleck & children to stay here for dinner, as she was up to use the telephone & it was very hot for them down there -In the P.M. Dad took Lillian & I downtown. I got my glasses $18.00 for lenses, $5.00 for testing - I went with Lillian shopping - Pat came downtown & then went home with us.

FRIDAY, AUGUST 31, 1951 We went to Mass as usual - Pat rode with Paul to work -getting along fine with my new glasses - Pat had to go to Bulgarellis late tonight & stay all night - with the children - so won't get to Mass tomorrow.

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 1, 1951 We went to Mass - Pats day off - also Maurice, at home today so he went to Mass with us - Pat didn't get home until around 9:00 a.m. from Bulgarellis, so didn't get to Mass. She helped me good - then went to the tractor rodeo - in the P.M. & helped with the work. Leonard won in the safety driving contest. Joanie stayed all night. Ben & Joann & family here for dinner.

SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 2, 1951 Pat & Joanie went to 6:00 Mass with Pauls - Dad, Moe & I went to 7:30, it was women's Sunday - Leonard & Gene went at 9:00 for Senior Sodality Sunday for Leonard. Pat had to work - sort of quiet day - Bens, Pauls & Lyles here in the eve - Pat & Gene went skating. Pat was real tired, slept from the time she came home from work.

MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 3, 1951 Labor Day - We all went to Mass but Pat & Len - they had to work - We had a big day - the men came & worked for Paul digging his drain & putting in his cesspool. I helped with the dinner, getting things ready here - we ate at Pauls. In the P.M. the women dressed 17 chickens for Lillian & cut up 3 bu. tomatoes to make into catsup for Joann - then she had to go to the hospital at 6:00. Pat & I cooked up tomatoes & canned 33 qt. juice, 16 qt. pulp.

TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 4, 1951 Ben got home here about 1:00 A.M. - the little baby boy Stephen Robert was born at 12:34. Pat had this a.m. off but stayed home with the children - we got their clothes & ironing brought over. Dad & I & Gene went to Mass - Mary came for Benny & his clothes - Lillian did Joann's ironing one of these days ?? Went to see Joann tonight.

WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 5, 1951 Dad & I & Pat & Gene went to Mass - the children stayed over at Lillians until we got home - I am still awfully tired from the big day Monday but Pat & I went to town this a.m. & shopped - I got my new black jacket dress - also new coat & hat - Pat got hat, dress & had her coat laid away at M.W. & Co. Up late tonight. Bob & Margaret came out tonight. Bob fixed the leak at the bath tub at Lenoch's. Made my Holy Hour tonight.

THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 6, 1951 Dad & I & Gene went to Mass. Pat had to go to work. I did the big washing and had so much work on my hands trying to get a birthday supper for Ben & Joey - cake & fruit salad, chicken, new peas etc. Mrs. Lenoch hung out some of the clothes for me - Ben visited Joanne at the hospital this P.M. & eve -

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 7, 1951 Bessie & Joeys birthday. We went to Mass as usual. Pats day off - so she got to go too - We got some of the house cleaned up today - I tried to get the ironing done - but the ironer went cold for me - then I did some by hand later in the eve - Ben here for a while after visiting at the hospital - Gerald & Pauline here this eve - Pat & Gene went skating - called Gert & Nick to tell them to come down to stand up for baby's baptism.

Pats day off - so she got to go too - We got some of the house cleaned up today - I tried to get the ironing done - but the ironer went cold for me - then I did some by hand later in the eve - Ben here for a while after visiting at the hospital - Gerald & Pauline here this eve - Pat & Gene went skating - called Gert & Nick to tell them to come down to stand up for baby's baptism.

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 8, 1951 We went to Mass - the children went over to Lillians until we got home - Ben was busy shopping for Joann & seeing about getting the baby baptized etc - etc - he also helped Lillian pick 2 ducks for their Sunday dinner - I did quite a good sized washing in the P.M. I went downtown & shopped some -got material for everyday dress - a scarf & cake pan for myself & Lillian & for gift for Bessie - also got my hair fixed - In the eve I baked 2 cakes & iced them & did lots of work. Gert & Nick came & she had to do her washing yet -

SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 9, 1951 Pat & I went to 6:00 Mass with Paul & Lillian - Pat had to work - then I got breakfast for myself and the little boys -Dad - Maurice, Leonard & Ben went to 7:30 Mass - Holy Name Men's Sunday - I was very busy all morning, finally got off for our trip to Velva's about 10:30 A.M. We went with Ed & Mary - that is Dad & I & Bessie - In the P.M. Maurice took Pat & Joanie Klein, Leonard - Gene & Lumsden boy to Ottumwa for the Holy Name Rally in the eve - Rainy but a very big crowd - Bens got their baby baptized today - Lillian had them & Gert & Nick & Eds boys for dinner. Joann came home from the hospital this a.m.

MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 10, 1951 We went to Mass - Pat & Len & Moe to work - I was pretty tired out today so didn't wash - but canned up my pickles, around 19 qt of them - then picked the lima beans & got them put in the deep freeze - 61 qt - I think - Bens & Eds & Pauls here in the eve for a while - Eds brought their pictures from their trip to show us -

TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 11, 1951 Dad & I & Gene went to Mass, then I did the washing today -it was fairly big so took quite a while. Pat got off at noon as she has a 12 days off this week - so she helped me some - In the eve Pat & Gene went skating - Ben hauled some kindling, was here a little while with the 4 boys. Lyles here this eve -

WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 12, 1951 Pats day off - so she got to go to Mass with us - right after breakfast I got ready & went with Bernice & Jennie & Lillian & children all but Tom - to Eds where we helped Mary pick, cut up & pan 12 old hens & helped Jennie pick & cut up 10 hens - after I got home we went over to Bens & got tomatoes & pickles. Tired & nervous tonight. Pat & Joanie went to a show - Gene & I went in after them late -

THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 13, 1951 Dad & I went to Mass in the Nash - Gene went in the Plymouth & took the boys to 7:30 as he had to take the car down to Skelleys to have it greased be there by 8:00 o clock - Mary & Lillian came & helped me out good today. We had around 3 bu tomatoes from Mary - Bens & Pauls & mine. We made 33 catsup - 32 qts tomato juice and canned 50 pt. corn - I also made 6 pt. sliced cucumber pickles this a.m. Pauls were here for dinner & supper. I am up very late writing this -

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 14, 1951 We went to Mass - hurried home as usual so Gene could get back in time for school. Mary & Lillian came back again today and helped me with the corn - I got 16 qts. or 32 pints. We canned 50 pints for Joann & 7 qts or 14 pints & 39 pints for 53 pints in all for Lillian making 135 pts in all today, through by 7:30 P.M. - Lillian washed in the forenoon - did some for me too - sent letter to Bro. John & card to Wilma. Kenny is 4 yrs. old today, Louise is 38.


SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 15, 1951 Dad & I went to Mass - Gene & Leonard & Ben went hunting squirrels early this morn - then Len went to work - Gene & Ben went to Eds to help shell corn - Dad took Lillian & Joann downtown to shop - Joann & children stayed the rest of the day - they went to the drive-in in the eve, left Stevie & Benny here - Dad went to sale in the P.M. - Dad & I picked the grapes - I got them ready & cooked them & canned 16 qts. juice & 6 qt. pulp for future jelly & jam making - Pat went to a show with Bert Hebel.

SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 16, 1951 Dad & I & Moe & Len went to 7:30 Mass. Pat went to 6:00 with Paul & Lillian - Gene went to 9:00 & took Ronnie & Tommy - Bens also went at 9:00 & left the boys here - Dad & I & Len & Moe went to Lyles's for dinner. The men all went hunting in the P.M. Eliz & I went to Coldsnows to see their dahlias & other flowers. We got nice chrysanthemums, dahlias & house plant slips - then we went on to Wilma's to see their new house - Carls & Pauls here for a while in the eve. I also took care of Benny, Stevie & Davey & Johnny Frantz.

MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 17, 1951 We went to Mass as usual. Gene drove his own car as he had to serve & no time to come home for breakfast - Lillian washed first - then I got started in after she got done & got through in fairly good time - went over to Bens & picked their pickles - Pat started to night school to learn typing. Lillian & Paul got their new venetian blinds. Carl came & helped Dad with cement -

TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 18, 1951 We went to Mass. Gene carried his lunch again & the little boys went to Mass too. Louise was out to Lillian's & got a permanent - And Carl came out here in the P.M. and helped Dad put in the foundation for our new garage - I was very busy all day, washing jars, picking beans & getting things ready for canning veg soup tomorrow. Frantzs & Milders helped Pauls get their 20 ducks dressed -

WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 19, 1951 We went to Mass as always - Gene drove his own car - Ronnie & Tommy started riding with Mulherins - Mary & Alan came -also Eliz & her 3 boys, Lillian & 3 little ones & Joann & 5 sons. The girls helped me make 56 qt. vegetable soup - 1 qt. corn - we used 3 canners - got along fine - Bens were here for supper - Pat went to night school & then to Junior Farm Bureau dance - Bert H brought her home, Leonard also went - I am awfully tired and house is a mess.

THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 20, 1951 We went to Mass - Pat too today, as it was her day off - We visited a lot today but did manage to get the ironing done & the kitchen floor cleaned - Pat went downtown in the P.M. & then to Novena at church - Dad & I went to Novena in the eve - Leonard had company for a while - Dad put roof on shed at Bens -

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 21, 1951 We went to Mass as always - Paul didn't know Pat was going to work & didn't wait so Len took her down - I made an applesauce cake today to take to Eds tonight, got work done up - so we were ready in good time. Ben's came over & they all went, Ben drove for us - Pauls, Lyles, Bernices, Eldons, Mr. & Mrs. Frantz, Gert & Nick & all of us helped. We did 24 ducks & 2 geese. Leonard & Pat went to Cosgrove to a dance - Gene went roller skating.


SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 22, 1951 We all went to Mass as usual - then after breakfast Dad took Joann & Lillian down shopping. I worked around, did washing, got dinner, took care of the children. In the P.M. Gene took me downtown, we got Pat at the hospital & went to confession, then shopped a while - I had Bens for supper & worked in eve to get ready for the trip up to Gert & Nicks tomorrow.

SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 23, 1951 Pat went with Pauls to 6:00 o'clock Mass - Dad & I went to 7:30, kept Bens children while they & Mickey to Mass. Len & Gene also went to 9:00 Mass - Gene had to help sing -about 10:30 we left 5or,Gertrudes - Eds, Pauls, Lyles - also went, Moe stayed there all night. The men all helped Nick to dig his trench & lay tiles for their drain - We got home about 6:00 - Bens here for supper. I was awful tired. Nice day, but rained a while on us coming home - went to bed about 9:30.

MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 24, 1951 We went to Mass - after breakfast Dad got ready & went out to Carls farm - he hauled out the cement mixer and helped Carl fix his barn - I did the washing, got through in fairly good time - it started raining - so had to take some of the clothes down & put on the rack in the house. Pat & Len & Gene went to Junior Farm Bureau skating party. Pat came home at noon, studied all P.M. - got good supper for Len's birthday. Leonard is 20 yrs. old today.

TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 25, 1951 We all went to Mass - Pats day off so she went too - she mopped my kitchen floor for me & cleaned up dining room, got supper, washed my hair & gave me a shampoo - I made water melon preserves, picked up ground cherries and got them ready for jam tomorrow - also went over to Bens & got tomatoes & pickles - Louise & Carl here this eve - Bens went to Eds & bought 14 hens to can - Dad went out with Carl to his farm.

WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 26, 1951 We went to Mass - rainy morning so Dad didn't go out with Carl, went downtown instead - in P.M. - started to put up framework for the garage - I canned 14 qt. tomatoes, made 2 batches ground cherry jam & then canned 18%z qt. sauerkraut. Pat made cake & cupcakes - Pauls & us help Ben & Joann dress their 14 hems to can tomorrow. Ben got ice cream for us all a treat.

THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 27, 1951 We went to Mass as usual. Then Dad went with Carl out to his farm to help him work & he also started to tear down that building he bought of Carl - Louise came out for the day & was here to help can Joann's chicken - Joann & the children all came over - Lillian helped some - We got through in good time & Louise & Lillian got the sweet corm so we got 14 qts. of that put in the deep freeze - Dad & Ben went after the pullets 45 Highland white Rocks 32 ct. a lb. Leonard took me to the Novena.

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 28, 1951 We went to Mass first today as usual - Ed came down to help Dad & Carl tear down the building Dad bought of Wilbur for $40.00. Mary came along and helped me out good - she swept & mopped the floors and also did quite a lot of the ironing. In the P.M. I got the peppers, tomatoes & onions ready for the grinding for the ? relish, had 19 pt. I think. Lyles here in the eve - also Pauline & Gerald, also kept all of Bens 5 boys.

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 29, 1951 We went to Mass - Gene rode along with us, also Shirley Hurt who had stayed here all night with Pat - Ed came back to help more with the building & Ben also helped so they were done by noon - Gene took Joann & Lillian downtown to do their shoppin9 , also paid ins. & telephone. In the P.M. Ben & Joann went to Oxford, took baby, dr. not in - In the eve they went out to the drive in. We canned 9 qt. pickles - I baked 6, pies & a cake. Maurice went to Gert & Nicks to stay over Sunday again.

SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 30, 1951 Leonard took Pat to 6:00 o'clock Mass as she had to work. Dad & I went to 7:30 and Gene went at 9:00 & took Ronny & Tommy with him - Dad & I went to Uncle Reubens for a reunion dinner with my sisters & brothers and we all had a very nice time, pictures taken & a very good dinner. Ed, Mary, Alan & Joyce, Paul & Lillian, Katherine & Phylis & Johnie went from here. Bessie, Margaret, Bob & Johnye, Velva & LeMoyne - Veatress & Harold - Rose & Art Glad??. In the eve Dad & I went to Steve & Marges on our way home.
