1951 Diary

January


MONDAY, JANUARY 1, 1951 Dad &,I & Maurice went to 7:30 Mass - but Pat, Len & Gene went with Eds to 9:00, Pat played - rather a quiet day, after our big day yesterday - Ben's stayed for breakfast, dinner & supper. In the P.M. Gene & Ben went out to Paul's & went hunting with him. Joanne put puzzles together. Dad & I took Carl's chairs home & visited there a while. In the evening Dad & Maurice, Ben & Joanne played cards.

TUESDAY, JANUARY 2, 1951 We all went to Mass but Leonard & he went to work. Raining & very icy this morning - but we made it down & back O.K. The school children still at home today. Pat cleaned up the house. I did quite a large washing, dried them all inside. I worried quite a lot tonight about icy roads etc. Len & Gene went downtown.

WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 3, 1951 We all went to Mass. Leonard went to work but came back home as it was snowing so hard & was down in the barn where they were working - then he helped Dad good over at Norton house. Ben also helped this P.M. to sand the floors. Moe helped today too with the walls. Bens went downtown before noon, then were here for dinner. I had a bad headache today.

THURSDAY, JANUARY 4, 1951 All went to Mass - but Leonard - he sprained his ankle last night playing basketball - but managed to work until 11:00 P.M. then went to the Dr. Ben didn't get to work on his job this morning so came here a little after 10:00 and run the sander until noon. Nick sent word that Ben should work for him so he went with Len this P.M. Moe worked hard all P.M. with the sander but they didn't get done. Dad & I went to Novena.

FRIDAY, JANUARY 5, 1951 We all went to Mass but Leonard - he went to work- also Ben got to go again today. Carson also went along & left his car here. Maurice took his written test for his new job this forenoon. Dad went downtown this A.M. took the sander back - also had the car greased and heater fixed. I went downtown with him in P.M. ordered 2 sheets, got 3 pr new hose, cost $1.75 a pr. - also changed my Christmas gift from ?. Bens, Lyles & Eds all here this eve. Len went to see Monsignor. I made my Holy Hour.

SATURDAY, JANUARY 6, 1951 We all went to Mass & Holy Communion as usual - First Saturday & Feast of the Epiphany. Len & Ben went to work for the a.m. but quit early as it was so cold. Pat played for a wedding at 8:00. I have bad headaches today. Went to the Dr. this P.M. and B.P. 185/95 more pills and have to go back in week or 10 days. Leonard talking about going to Davenport to enlist on Monday. Bens left children here this P.M. while they went downtown. Were here for supper - then went to show in evening-. Pat out with Earl again tonight.

SUNDAY, JANUARY 7, 1951 Dad & I & Maurice & Leonard went to 7:30 Mass. Len went in to see Msgr. He gave him a box of chocolates. Pat & Gene went to 9:00 Mass, rode down with Pauls - Eds stopped & left Alan. Ben's went at 11:30 then stayed for dinner & supper. No company today but Ben's, & Eds came in the eve - they all played cards - they brought popcorn & the kids & Pat popped, made a lot. Mrs. Walter Michel died at 5:45 P.M. from fall on ice Thursday eve - never became conscious.


MONDAY, JANUARY 8, 1951 We all went to Mass and Holy Communion this morning. Leonard drove down & took Gordon to Mass with him - then after breakfast about 9:25 he went down & met the boys Kenny & Gordon, they tried to get enlisted downtown, but finally had to go to Davenport about noon - enlisted up there in the Air Corps for mechanics. Joanie came home with Pat to stay all night & go to the dance. Bessie, Bob, Margaret & Johnie, ? and Frances were out for a while. The girls rode downtown with Phin & Fran.

TUESDAY, JANUARY 9, 1951 We all went to Mass - but Leonard - he went to work. I did the washing today and got through in real good time for once & it wasn't so large. Fairly warm day - so hung out quite a lot of them. The Watkins man came this P.M. The men were working at the Norton house and Maurice got the ceiling painted on the new side. Aunt Frances & Louis spent the eve here until 10:00 P.M.

WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 10, 1951 We went to Mass as usual. Maurice went alone, as Dad & I stayed down & ate our lunch - then went with Eds & Bernice to Hills, for the funeral of Mrs. Walter Michel - very, very, large crowd. In the late P.M. I did the ironing. The St. Pats-St. Mary's game tonight. I didn't care to go - so let Ben & Joann have my ticket. They also used Dick Hoffeys. I kept the children - St. Pats beat by 18 points.

THURSDAY, JANUARY 11, 1951 We all went to Mass - and after had the dishes done - Dad & I went down for the wall paper for the front bedroom in Norton house. Mary, Joann, Eliz & Lyle papered for-us today. I took care of the 8 youngsters, and got dinner. In the P.M. I trimmed border - and Eds & boys went home for chores, came back for supper - also all Bens here & Eliz her 3 boys - got front & back rooms done before supper. In the eve Ed & Lyle helped the 3 girls & they papered the hall. Gerald & Pauline also here awhile in the evening. Wilma, Clarence & Tony here this evening. Wilma and I made lasagna ?.

FRIDAY, JANUARY 12, 1951 We went to Mass & Leonard to work. I was real tired so didn't get too much done - sent off the money for the Christmas stamps, wrote letters to Bro. John & Gertrude. Churned and got the butter all worked. Pat went to a show with Dick Hoffey- Gert & Nick surprised us & came down about 6:30, left baby at home - they left about 10:00 P.M. Ben came over for the prize fight. Ezra Charles won. Pauls came & left the boys.

SATURDAY, JANUARY 13, 1951 We all went to Mass. Leonard to work again. Dad took Ronnie & Tommy down to catechism & brought the groceries -gifts for shower. Bens went down in the P.M. and then stayed for supper with us - Pauls came in the eve, Pat went downtown with them & then studied.

SUNDAY, JANUARY 14, 1951 Men's Sunday - Dad, Maurice, Len & I went to Mass - Pat & Gene went with Pauls. Bens & Pauls both went at 9:00. I kept the children. Ben & Gene went hunting before noon. We had a nice dinner - got through in good time. Bens came in P.M. & stayed for supper & evening. Louise & Carl came out in the eve for their eggs. Leonard hurt his knee playing basketball this P.M.


MONDAY, JANUARY 15, 1951 We all went to Mass - but Len - he expected to go to work -then didn't work, his knee bothered him so much - he went down to x-ray, had it treated & bandaged up. He got the kids at school in the P.M. Gene served this morn, Pat is playing the Masses this week. I did a big washing & got a lot of them hung out and dried a couple of racks in the house. Dad worked on the cupboards this eve.

TUESDAY, JANUARY 16, 1951 We all went to Mass, but Len, his knee still bothers him. I wrote to Bro. John - went across the street & helped pick up some of the stuff as they are moving out the junk and getting ready for the girls to come back to finish the papering tomorrow. I went to the shower this eve. for Vanderhaar & Yeggy girls that marry the Bushman boys. Nice home.

WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 17, 1951 We all went to Mass & Communion. Joann & children were here when we got home - Mary & Elizabeth came later - so the girls got the middle bedroom papered by noon - sure looks nice. In the P.M. they did the closet & painted a little. They had to leave early. Maurice, Frantzs and others went to Eds for fishing. We all went but Moe to basketball game -St. Marys beat Catholic Central of Ottumwa 60-97 - a very good game.

THURSDAY, JANUARY 18, 1951 We all went to Mass & Communion this morn. Gene came home for breakfast, as didn't have to be in school until 10:20 on account of exams. Pat stayed down at school to study. Nick called & wanted Leonard to go to work so he is going to try it. Dad & Maurice delivered the organ to the Watkins man and the shoe sewing machine to old Ken - then Dad got Joann & the children, brought them over for dinner, then took Joann, Kenny & Benny to the Dr. in the P.M. They got Penicillin shots. Kenny had infection in the ear, Benny a cold. Mary came in P.M. & helped with ironing. Dad & I went to novena. Bens here for supper. Pauline & Gerald came in eve.

FRIDAY, JANUARY 19, 1951 We all went to Mass - then Leonard went to work. Pat played Mass - then had a funeral to play at 9:00. I wrote cards to Wilma, Gertrude, Myrtle & Aunt Anna. Dad & Moe hauled a plow up to Eds & brought the children to stay over for catechism tomorrow. Gene went to practice, Pat to Senior class party.

SATURDAY, JANUARY 20, 1951 We all went to Mass. It was sort of cloudy - later in the morning it started to snow & snowed real hard. Ben's came over to go to Eds with Moe & Gene. Joann went downtown with Dad, when he took Paul's boys to catechism so she got her shopping done. In the P.M. Dad & I, Pat & Gene went to confession. I went to Dr. B.P. 164/90. The folks bought me a good new pair of overshoes - also got pills. Pauls didn't come for the boys, as it was too stormy.

SUNDAY, JANUARY 21, 1951 Roads fairly good - Dad & I, Maurice & Leonard went to 7:30 Mass - Pat & Gene to 9:00 also Pauls & Ben's. We kept the children, about 11:00 Pat, Joanie & Leonard went down to meet Kenny Kabela, to go with him to Davenport for the Catholic basketball tournament - then got home around 11:30 had a good time. Dad & I, Moe, Gene & Ben's family all went in the Nash to Eds for his 40th birthday, had a very good dinner & nice time - saw their new television, oil heater & new ceiling. Ed, Ben & Moe went hunting, got 3 rabbits. Bens stayed for supper and played cards.


MONDAY, JANUARY 22, 1951 We all went to Mass, and Joanie Klein too - who stayed all night with Pat. Pat played Mass for Joanie Koenadle. I did the washing today - took until after 3:00 P.M. lots of clean clothes again, dried them all inside. Leonard went to the Dr. today, then he took Joanie downtown to meet her father to go home. Marilyn Mullherin also rode along. No company today but Roger M.

TUESDAY, JANUARY 23„ 1951 We all went to Mass - not so cold today. Pat played Mass again today for Joanie - Gene served for Black & Cahill. I wrote letter to Bro. John. Leonard went to Davenport with Kenny to see the end of the tournament. St. Pats lost to Clinton in the first game - and Muscatine to Burlington - in the finals. Clinton 1st, Burlington 2nd, St. Pats 3rd, Muscatine 4th Fort Madison in the consolation. Pat went to a show this eve. with Dick. I finished the ironing about 8:20.

WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 24, 1951 We all went to Mass - Pat had a funeral to play at 9:00. I did up my work & then wrote a big letter to Aunt Minnie. In the P.M. I mended a little, got early big supper started. Pat helped finish it when she got home - nice day but very cold. Gene went to basketball practice. All at home in the eve. Lyle's came, brought cards and pictures.

THURSDAY, JANUARY 25 We all went to Mass and Holy Communion this morning. Ben couldn't get his car started so Moe took him down to work in the Nash. Len went downtown, took Geralds nos. down from his Ford to put it in storage. Wrote to Bro. John & Mrs. Wodahodsky. In the P.M. went down with Leonard and looked at formals - then went to Novena - after that we went down and Pat tried on a formal, and had it laid away for her.

FRIDAY, JANUARY 26, 1951 We all went to Mass. Then Mary & Alan came out early and Mary & I got comforter tops sewed up & put on, and almost all tied, before she had to go home. Maurice & Pat helped me finish tying it before supper. Pat went out to the Roller skating rink tonight with some girls, had a good time.

SATURDAY, JANUARY 27, 1951 We all went to Mass. Pat had to play for Knoedal again today. Rosann Bock changed her mind so Pat didn't have to play for her wedding - but played for Mrs. Gongh's funeral at 10:15. Dad took her down & got the groceries. Pauls family sick, so they didn't come in last night for catechism. Today Ben's family didn't come until this eve. -then they left the children here while they went to a show. Went to the Dr. this P.M. B.P. 175/ 86

SUNDAY, JANUARY 28, 1951 Dad & I, Moe & Leonard went to 7:30 Mass - then Len took Pat & Gene down for 9:00, Pat had to play. Ben's went to 10:15 & left the children here- Gerald & Pauline came up for 9:00 Mass, then came out for dinner. We had early dinner, then Ben & Joann & I went with Pauline & Gerald up to Gert & Nicks, was pretty cold - but had a nice time - Baby growing good - Ben's stayed for supper and played cards.

MONDAY, JANUARY 29, 1951 We all went to Mass in Leonard's car, - Nash wouldn't start - this was the coldest morning of the year, 12 below here 14 below downtown. I wrote to Bro. John and a card to Wilma -didn't get much extra done - but take off comforter cover to get it ready for the washing. In the eve we went with Leonard to the basketball game - he sold tickets - Loras beat St. Mary's 18 points.

TUESDAY, JANUARY 30, 1951 We all went to Mass again this morning in Leonards car, it was 14 below here. I didn't wash again today, wrote letter to Lawrence & short ones to Eliz & Lillian. Ben came over in P.M. - also Lyle came up, the men played cards for a while. Joanie Klein came with Pat after school, was here for supper, stayed all night. Leonard took them to a wedding dance. Ben's came over for the eve.

WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 31, 1951 We all went to Mass - Pat played the Requiem - were almost late. I started the washing, then Ben's came over & Joann helped me & were all done but drying the last batch while we ate dinner - dried them all inside, a cold day as usual. Ben's stayed for supper & until in the evening - all home -but Gene had to go to practice - getting colder again tonight-

THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 1, 1951 We all went to Mass as usual - couldn't get the Nash started, so had to go in Leonard's car. Pat played the Requiem again today. I wrote letters to Sister Margaretta & Bro. John. I patched Dad's work coat today. In the P.M. Dad & I went down for the Novena & to confession and brought Gene home. Pat went home with Joanie Klein & went to St. Marys Oxford game at Oxford. St. Mary's won - she stayed all night - Gene got to go too - sprained his ankle.

FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 2, 1951 Candlemas Day - First Friday & we all went to Mass, still a very cold day, but Dad & I, Maurice & Leonard went to Uncle Reuben's to see how he was - and help out some - so took them & their eggs to Muscatine so they got their groceries. The boys helped some with the chores. Ben got the school kids, then shopped for their groceries & stayed for supper. Lyle's and Pauls also here in the eve. Pat went skating with Bert.

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 3, 1951 We all went to Mass - and had our throats blessed, took Rose Ann, Ronny & Tommy with us. Then Pat & RoseAnn went back down for the Bushman wedding while Ronny & Tommy went to catechism. We had a long hard day of work - Bens went to confession & took Ronny. Lyles came again this eve, and left the children here - they & Bens went to a show - Pauls came & left the children & then went shopping. Len, Pat, Gene, Moe all home tonight.

SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 4, 1951 Leonard went to 6:00 Mass, Dad & I & Maurice to 7:30, Pat & Gene & Rose Ann to 9:00 with Ben's. Then Ben's were here for breakfast, dinner & supper. Paul's left the children here while they went to Mass, then they went to Carls for dinner. I had Lyle & Elizabeth & family here for dinner to celebrate their wedding anniversary - which was on Saturday. Leonard went out with Kenny. Pat, Rose Ann & Marilyn went to a show this P.M.

MONDAY, FEBRUARY 5, 1951 All went to Mass - then after breakfast Leonard left for Uncle Reuben's to see if there was anything he could do to help him. Maurice ground & mixed chicken mash. In the P.M. he went to Cedar Rapids to see about a job at Collins Radio but didn't wait. Ben's went to a show & left the children here. Leonard didn't come back.

TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 6, 1951 Maurice went to Burlington & Ft. Madison. We all went to Mass. I was too tired to wash yet today - Mary & Ed came down, and then Mary & I tied a comforter. Ed brought the kids home from school. Pat went to Box Social at school -Dick got her box - she came home in a taxi - roads pretty icy.

WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 7, 1951 All went to Mass - Ash Wed. - we had good luck in getting the car started and there on time - it was quite cold & windy today. We had Ben's come over & Joann helped me with the washing. Maurice came home before supper. In the eve. Maurice, Dad & I, Ben & Joann went to Devotions.


THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 8, 1951 We all went to Mass and Holy Communion - it started to snow & got pretty bad. Maurice & Ben went to Uncle Reubens to see if they could help with the wood. They did and got it all finished up and ready to saw - it was a real snowy day.

FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 9, 1951 We all went to Mass & Holy Communion as usual - it was real cold again today - some say 20 below. Eds came to go to Lyle's to help paper so Maurice and I went along. They got all finished up in good time. We had Ben's for supper and Pauls & Eds came in eve to go to Devotions. Pat & Gene here with the kids.

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 10, 1951 We all went to Mass - Pat played for Joanie K. Then after breakfast Ben's came over. Pat offered to do the work & take care of the children so Joann & I both went along with Dad, Ben & Maurice to Reubens to do the wood sawing. We had a good day - they got finished. Leonard also ground a load of feed - then he came home too. We got their separator. Big airplane wreck & 3 men killed at Lone Tree. Pat baby sat this eve. at Engels.

SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 11, 1951 Dad & I & Maurice, Leonard, Ben & Joann, all went to 7:30 Mass and Holy Communion as it was Men's Sunday. Then Dad & I & Moe & Gene went to Pauls for a turkey dinner, it sure was good. Pat & Len stayed home - Pat went out with Bob S. from Kalona. This eve Louise's & Ben's & Lyles here. Ben's here for supper. We came home in time for Devotions. Ben took Pat.

MONDAY, FEBRUARY 12, 1951 We all went to Mass and Holy Communion as usual - Pat playing this week - but organ doesn't work so they had to get along without it. I am very tired today - so didn't get much accomplished - meals etc. etc.

TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 13, 1951 All to Mass as usual. I feel pretty good - so did the washing - and glad to have it out of the way- Pat & Leonard went roller skating tonight - I was up rather late.

WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 14, 1951 All to Mass again. The men went over to Ben's and help cut down some trees, for wood for Bernard - Leonard & I went to church this P.M. Len went down to Margarets & got the high chair. Ben's came over & helped butcher a hog & then Bens were here for supper. Joann sick tonight so couldn't go to church - Pauls came in and went.


THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 15, 1951 We all went to Mass as usual. After breakfast - Ben & Joann & family came over & helped us good - were here for dinner & supper - I gave out in the P.M. & had to rest - but felt better by evening & finished the ironing after supper. The folks played cards.

FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 16, 1951 All to Mass and Holy Communion - tired today, couldn't get much done - I wrote to Aunt Anna - Myrtle & Wilma - than we all went to the Stations this afternoon - Very icy streets & roads - No one came to go to church this eve - I was very tired & nervous.

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 17, 1951 We all went to Mass as usual - we had plenty to do to get our Saturday's work done - Pat made Mickey's birthday cake for Joann - Ben did their shopping in the forenoon & were here for dinner - Dad & I & Pat went to confession in P.M. -then I went to the Dr. B.P. 165/95, weighed 203 lbs. coat & overshoes weighed 8 lbs. so am down to 195- No one came this eve. - still icy roads -

SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 18, 1951 Mickey is 5 yrs. old today. Ben's went to 6:00 Mass - Dad & I, Moe & Len went to 7:30, Pat & Gene to 9:00, Pat played on loud part of organ. On account of the roads - Ben's had Mickey's birthday diner here & had Eds & us invited - had a very nice dinner - chicken, gravy, potatoes, peas, cake, & strawberries. In the P.M. Pauls came, stayed for the Stations at church & here for supper. Wilma & 3 children also here in P.M., went with us to church - Pauline & Gerald here for a while.

MONDAY, FEBRUARY 19, 1951 We went to Mass - Ben has work today. Joanne decided to take Baby Benny to the Dr. so Len went in after them before it thawed out. Dad took her & Babe over to Oxford in P.M. Dr. wants them to put Benny in hospital for a few days to see if they can find out what ails him. Bens all here for supper. We kept Kenny & Mickey all night. Pat baby sitting at Engels.

TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 20, 1951 I did a big washing today, very. Wrote to Bro. John. We all went to Mass, left Kenny & Mickey here - Joann, Baby & Joey rode out with Ben when he went to work- Dad took Joann & Baby down to the hospital in the forenoon- they left the Baby - she went again in the P.M. when Leonard went after the school kids & again in the eve. she & Ben went. Pat, Len & Gene went to basketball game, St. Marys 52, Oxford 50, first sectional game - very tired. Maurice came home this P.M. I got a big supper-

WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 21, 1951 We all went to Mass - I am pretty tired today so trying to take it a little easier. Sent birthday card to Harold & Veatress. In the P.M. I went down to the hospital to see Benny while Leonard went to the Novena and got the school kids. In the eve. Dad & I, Moe & Gene went to Novena. Gene had to serve - after Novena we went up to see the pictures of the Iowa Holy Year Pilgrimage. Ben & Jo went to see Benny & to church.


THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 22, 1951 We all went to Mass - The 3 men went up to Eds to get a pick up truck load of hay - got back in good time - I did some of the ironing - but couldn't get it quite finished - was too tired - Pat & Leonard & Gene went to the 2nd Sectional game - St. Marys beat W. Branch. Kenny sick today - Dad went over & stayed with the boys while B & J went to see Benny.

FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 23, 1951 We all went to Mass - This is Joanns birthday & she & the boys came out. In the P.M. Leonard took her & Kenny out to the Dr. - now he wants them to put Kenny in the hospital to find out what is wrong with him - Joann stopped in to see Benny before she came home & they went again before Devotions. Pauls & Eds both in - they played cards afterwards. Made a good supper for Joanns birthday.

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 24, 1951 We all went to Mass - then after Mass Maurice took the boys down for Catechism. Pat went along & got her formal. Bens came over early, before it thawed out - they shopped in the forenoon - In the P.M. they went to see Benny. In the eve. they went out for a birthday supper for Joann & to see the finals of the Sectional game. St. Pats beat St. Marys 78-51. Gert & Nick & Jimmy surprised us & came about 5:00 P.M. to stay all night. Moe & Nick went to game at field house. Pat, Len & Gene to Sectional finals.

SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 25, 1951 Dad & I & Moe & Len went to 7:30 Mass, Pat & Gene with Pails to 9:00. Joannie Klein came home with Pat for dinner. Leonard had Gordon S , Kenny K & Jerry Cr all for dinner today. We had a nice dinner - duck, potatoes, gravy, new corn - carrot salad, celery, cherry pie with ice cream -then Dad & I had to go to Wilma's for dinner as we had promised - the rest got along O.K. Louise & Carl came in the P.M. - she did the dishes up before we got home - Pat & Joanne went to Hurts in the P.M. - In the eve. Pat went with Glen Kasper to movie -

MONDAY, FEBRUARY 26, 1951 I was quite sick all the late part of the night with stomach flu - or something so wasn't able to go to Mass. I stayed in bed until quite late, then got up & slowly started into the work. Joann & boys walked over - then Dad took her down to the hospital & they got the Baby, he is getting along fine now - then Joann helped me to get supper for the Richey's & Bessie. We had a good supper. Joanie Klein also came home with Pat & then in the eve they went with Eliz, Lyle, & the girls to the 4-H club roller-skating party. We kept Lyles boys here.

TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 27, 1951 I am feeling some better today, but didn't work much, tried to get the house straightened up a bit, stayed up rather late and sewed some. Ben stopped in on way home from work -Mrs. Bushman stopped in to see about the houses being for rent - Leonard went to pie social.

WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 28, 1951 We all went to Mass - I did a rather large washing today, and sure was tired - Len went to church this P.M. & to see Msgr. - Dad & I, Moe & Gene went to Novena this eve - Gene had to serve. This was a very rainy, miserable day Ben worked all day in it-

THURSDAY, MARCH 1, 1951 We all went to Mass but Maurice, he had to go to Cedar Rapids for his big test - to get into Collins Radio job. I worked around with the clothes getting them all dry. Nick called Leonard to get him started to work tomorrow. In the eve Dick & Howard came out & got Pat & they went out to Joanie Kleins. I ironed some late this P.M. & eve.

FRIDAY, MARCH 2, 1951 We all went to Mass- as its first Friday - hurried home so Leonard could go to work at 8:30, it started to sleet, snow & rain - turned out to be a very bad day. Ben didn't work in P.M. - but Leonard got in a whole day. Dad & I & Leonard & Gene went to Stations, Devotions, Leonard & Gene both helped serve -

SATURDAY, MARCH 3, 1951 We all went to Mass - hurried home so Leonard could get to work on time - Ben's came over in pretty good time - Dad & Moe took Ben, Joann, Mickey & Kenny downtown in the A.M. They got the boys hair cut in the P.M. They took Kenny to the Dr. He wants them to put him in the hospital Monday for x-rays. Pauls came in the eve.

SUNDAY, MARCH 4, 1951 Leonard & Gene went to 6:00 Mass as Gene had to serve - Dad & I & Moe to 7:30 Women's Sunday - Pat went with Pauls to 9:00 she played- Tommy's 7th birthday so Pauls stayed in for dinner & also Ben's on account of roads - Eds went home & got food - they also stayed for Tommy's birthday dinner -Pauls & Bens also here for supper. Dad & I, Moe & Len, Paul, Lillian, Ben & Joann all went in the Nash to Devotions at 4:00 P.M. Gene came home with us - Mickey, Kenny & Joe stayed all night - Ben & Joann carried baby and walked home, it was so muddy.

MONDAY, MARCH 5, 1951 Leonard stayed home with the boys - Dad & I, Pat & Gene went to Mass - Gene had to serve. Maurice went to Cedar Rapids to take his physical and was back before noon. I washed & took care of the boys - Joann came over before supper & got Kenny ready to go to the hospital - they took him in before 6:00 P.M. Pat & Dick went skating. Marilyn & Roger over in the eve - Gene made candy.

TUESDAY, MARCH 6, 1951 Dad & I - Pat & Gene went to Mass - Dad went with Carl out to his farm and helped work on his buildings. Joann walked over with the children before 10:00 A.M. Louise came out for dinner, helped iron some - then took Joann to the hospital to see Kenny - Ben & Joann & family here for supper, then they went to see Kenny. Lyles here in the eve. Maurice started work for Collins Radio.

WEDNESDAY, MARCH 7, 1951 We went to Mass - Leonard & Maurice to work - Dad went out with Carl again. I wrote to Bro. John & Gert & Nick. Joann and the children came over before 1:00 P.M. and she went down to see Kenny - he was fine - Dad & I & Len - also Ben & Joann went in to see him in the eve - he had a real upset stomach from the dope they had given him to take the x-rays. Dad & I went to Novena, and to confession.


THURSDAY, MARCH 8, 1951 We went to Mass as usual - Joann & the children came over early & Joann & Dad went downtown - she to the hospital to see Kenny, also the Dr. Ken much better & can go home tomorrow. I went down with Dad in P.M. to sign papers at the bank & get the kids. Pat & Gene & I went to see Kenny, he was feeling fine & looked so cute sitting at the desk with the nurse- Bens went down again this eve. Finish Novena.

FRIDAY, MARCH 9, 1951 We went to Mass and Holy Communion as usual - Joann & the children came over - and Dad & Joann went after Kenny in the forenoon - he was just fine - Eliz & Lyle came late in the P.M. and got my platform rocker to cover - forgot the padding so Len took it down before Devotions. Eds & Pauls both came in the eve for the stations - Bens also went. Ronnie & Tommy stayed all night.

SATURDAY, MARCH 10, 1951 We went to Mass - Maurice too as he didn't have to work today - Ben's came over in good time and shopped this forenoon - Pat had to go down at 1:00 to practice - Dad & I & Maurice went to Cedar Rapids in the P.M., looked at furniture, didn't buy any. Maurice got pants & we also got a pr. for Gene - started snowing this morning, kept it up all day & getting worse all the time - Pat went with the Hoffeys to Eli to a party - Ronnie & Tommy here all night again.

SUNDAY, MARCH 11, 1951 no company today - Dad & Maurice - Leonard & I went to 7:30 Mass - Holy Name Sunday & the men stayed for breakfast -Ben's couldn't get out, got stuck on account of snow - and had to walk the rest of the way - so Ben's & Gene & Pat went with them to 9:00, Pat had to play & Gene serve. I gave all the little folks breakfast that didn't have any - then Ben's went home after breakfast & they got their car pulled out -then he brought it over here. Very bad, snowing most all day - Pat had to go down early for the little folks recital - We went to Devotions in P.M., got Pat - had lunch at noon and dinner after Devotions.

MONDAY, MARCH 12, 1951 no school today - Maurice & Leonard home, very bad roads -but we got up early and all got to Mass with Leonard in his car as he had chains on - We even got to church by about 7:00 A.M. Pat played 2 requiem Masses & Gene served -Very, very thankful we could get out - Ben came over and got his car out on the road - but didn't go anywhere - just played cards a while with the men - then went home for dinner. I did the washing, also churned & worked butter, a good days work. The men graded out the lane & down the road to town.

TUESDAY, MARCH 13, 1951 We all went to Mass again today, (Msgr. very pleased about it) - They had school today, but didn't start the retreat, it is postponed until next week - lots of kids still absent - I wrote to Bro. John, Wilma, Myrtle & sent money for the Easter Seals - Dad & Leonard went downtown after noon. Dad to pay his income tax and Len to see about his statement from Bodeys so he can send his in. Ben worked today too -Maurice & Len still at home.

WEDNESDAY, MARCH 14, 1951 Maurice went to work - Dad took him down in his car to meet Mr. that he rides with, so he could use M's car to go to Mass in - Leonard also went to work at Bodeys, for a few days - I did quite a bit of baking today, pies & a cake - so we could have a good meal for Leonard - also finished some ironing this evening - Still no mail today.


THURSDAY, MARCH 15, 1951 We went to Mass & Communion as usual. Leonard & Maurice to work - I wrote to Lawrence, sent him pictures. In the P.M. we went downtown, I had my B.P. taken 176/100, weight 198 - We got school kids. Papa went after Maurice. He was rather late - Music recital this eve - Pat played for Joannie. Joannie Klein came home with Pat & stayed all night. First mail today. Pat played 2 Requiems today.

FRIDAY, MARCH 16, 1951 Dad & I, Pat & Gene & Joann to Mass - not such a bad day -Maurice & Leonard both at work - Carl & Louise came out to see if they could help do some painting, but Carl helped Dad haul some hay instead, and they were also here for dinner -I didn't get much work done today but we went to Stations in eve - I fell in a puddle of water by curb, & got soaked.

SATURDAY, MARCH 17, 1951 We all went to Mass, Leonard didn't work today, so went to Mass with us - and Pat played - We sent for her pictures and her suit today. After dinner they used the tractor and old sled and brought Joann and the children out - they went to town this afternoon, and then stayed out so could go to church Sunday.

SUNDAY, MARCH 18, 1951 Palm Sunday - We went to Mass - at 7:30 Maurice, Dad & I, Ben & Joann - Leonard took Pat & Gene at 9:00. Gene had to stay to serve at 10:15 and for the blessing of the palms -In the P.M. Pat & Marilyn went downtown with Leonard - the rest of us went to the Stations - Gene kept the children -Gerald & Pauline were here for a while -

MONDAY, MARCH 19, 1951 We all went to Mass as usual - Ben & Maurice went to work -but Leonard didn't have any - the children went to school -We just worked around here - and I tried to get some of my Easter mail written - Pat & Gene & Leonard, took Dick with them, and went skating - out at Coralville.

TUESDAY, MARCH 20, 1951 We all went to Mass - Maurice & Ben to work again, pretty cold days - Joann doesn't feel very good, upset stomach and bowels - I did the washing and churning - quite a hard day -wrote a letter too - still working on my Easter mail - Pat & Gene starting retreat, high school.

WEDNESDAY, MARCH 21, 1951 We all went to Mass - High school still having retreat - I got more mail ready - Joann did her washing - Maurice & Ben working - Dad & I went to Novena in the P.M. - went early and I went down & looked for Pat a suit - as the money came back from the one we ordered - we found one, bought it. Maurice, Ben & Joann & Leonard went to Novena.


THURSDAY, MARCH 22, 1951 Started drilling the well - Got a call from Myrtle early this morning, that Reuben was sick again & not able to do his work so Leonard got ready & went right away & done their chores, took Reuben to hospital at noon. Dad & I went down at 7:00 for Communion, then again at 9:00 to St. Pats for Solemn High Mass - and to see Charles march in procession, 10 little girls & 10 little boys dressed in white & carried flowers. Len was torch bearer at Mass at St. Marys & Pat played until Gloria. In eve Pat & I & Dad & Gene, Maurice went for family holy hour. Joann sick - Dad took her to Dr. this P.M. Finished my mail.

FRIDAY, MARCH 23, 1951 Dad & I - Maurice & Ben went to church for holy hour during the night from 1:00 to 2:00 - then in the morning Dad & I, Pat and Gene went to 8:30 Good Friday Mass - then a little after 10:00 A.M. - Dad & I went & took Bessie to Reubens -we had dinner with Myrtle & Leonard - then went to hospital in the P.M. to visit Reuben - Bessie stayed - he is some better - We came home in a snowstorm, stopped z hour at Veatress' - Dad & I, Maurice, Ben & Joann & Gene went to the Stations. Drilled more on well today.

SATURDAY, MARCH 24, 1951 Dad & I, Pat, Gene & Maurice went to Mass & got home in fair time, Ben & Joann went downtown in A.M. Ben & Maurice went to Muscatine in P.M. to see Reuben & take their radio home -Pat went down to practice, then Dad & I went down to buy the groceries. I helped Pat pick out her hat & slip - fixed her suit. When we came home - Ben & Joann went to show in eve -I worked late in the kitchen - Leonard brought Bessie back to Iowa City, came out and got her Sunday suit. No drilling today.

SUNDAY, MARCH 25, 1901 Easter - Dad & I & Maurice & Gene went to 7:30, Gene was torch bearer - Pat went with Ben & Joann to 6:00, she played then, she also stayed for 7:30 & went to communion & stayed, played again at 9:00. We all went to Elizabeths for dinner today, all of us from around here were there, 48 in all - Very good dinner & a nice time & Wilma gave me a lovely Easter Lily - Leonard ca-me home from Reubens.

MONDAY, MARCH 26, 1951 Louise called & told us about studio couch that was advertised, we went down and bought it - We went to Mass as usual. Gene served - We were in time for the rosary. Ben, Maurice & Leonard all went to work - got the washing ready -and Joann helped run the clothes through - Pat cleaned up the house - I got most of them hung outside - Louise came in the P.M. - Joann gave her a permanent & I made a good supper - then Ben & Joann & family went home with the tractor & trailer. Drilled more on well today.

TUESDAY, MARCH 27, 1951 We went to Mass - I talked to Msgr. on phone - rained some today - sort of drizzly. Carl came & helped paint at the Norton house - did the kitchen walls for us - The well drillers came & got the well finished at 120 ft. The boys Maurice, Gene, & Leonard borrowed Yoders pickup truck & brought home the studio couch - I wrote to Reubens & sent card, also letter to Bro. John & for samples for plastic to cover studio couch.

WEDNESDAY, MARCH 28, 1951 disagreeable day again - We went to Mass - Maurice and Leonard both working - Ben came home early. Couldn't work on account of rain - Carl came out and painted again today & stayed for dinner. Kids got out of school again today, that is this P.M. Pat & I did all the ironing this P.M. Marilyn over for a while this eve - Bessie called, she heard from Myrtle that Reuben was out of the hospital.

THURSDAY, MARCH 29, 1951 We went to Mass. Leonard & Maurice to work - still spitting a little rain. I wrote to Pauline, Wilma, & Elizabeth today. Carl out here working but didn't stay for dinner - I cooked chicken. Joanie Klein came out for dinner & stayed for the P.M. Dad & Pat took her to the bus. Dad & I & Gene went to the Novena - sort of nervous tonight.

FRIDAY, MARCH 30, 1951 All went to Mass - that is Pat & Gene, Dad & I. Pat played the High Mass, Gene had to help serve. Carl didn't come out but Louise did - she cleaned up the front room & the studio couch for me - The ground covered with snow again this morning - very dismal day - ruts plenty deep - Lyle's family came this eve.

SATURDAY, MARCH 31, 1951 We all went to Mass & Holy Communion, Maurice & Leonard too - as they didn't have to work today - after breakfast Dad went to do chores - took the tractor & trailer so Ben and family got out once again. Ben & Joann went downtown in A.M. Also Maurice, Dad & Pat - she got new shoes. Dad got groceries - In the eve. Ben & Joann went to a show - Pat went down to skate with Joanie - then Dick brought her home. Bens stayed all night.
