1950 Diary

January

SUNDAY, JANUARY 1, 1950- New Year's Day- Leonard and Gene and Brother John went to 6:00 Mass. Then Dad and I went with Maurice to 7:30. I stayed for the 9:00 and enjoyed hearing Pat play and Charles' boy sing. Gerald brought Brother John and Pat to this Mass. We had Paul's and Ed and Lyle's for dinner. With us made in 28. For supper we had, Ed's and Lyle's, Carls', Bessie, Leroy and wife-Margaret, Bob and Johnny also Veatrice and Harold. All together 33-Nice evening watching television and visiting and playing canasta. Pat went to Engal's baby-sit. Muddy, damp, foggy, bad roads, Ben's couldn't in.

MONDAY, JANUARY 2, 1950- Brother John got up around 6:00 a.m., so to get most of his office said before he and I went to 7:30 Mass. A rainy foggy morning. After breakfast Brother John and Maurice went out to Ben's for a little visit. After dinner Leonard and Brother John went down to see if they had any reservations for him but they didn't so he was quite worried. He packed his suitcase, then rested awhile. Then Leonard, Maurice and I went to the depot with him.Then he got reservations as far as Lincoln.

TUESDAY, JANUARY 3, 1950- We didn't to get up as early this morning-but did a big days work anyway. I washed 12 machine loads and since it was raining had to dry all of them in the House. It rained and started to freeze in the morning. Kept getting colder all day. The boys went to basketball practice.

WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 4, 1950- The children back in school today. They got up and did chores and off in good time. I finished drying clothes today. Got some of them dampened and we ironed them. In the evening we went to the basketball game. St. Mary's lost to Keokuk 36 to 30. A good game. Wrote to Brother John and Gertrude. Three below zero.

THURSDAY, JANUARY 5, 1950- I got pictures ready to mail. Children off to school in good and time again today. I got more ironing ready and we got it finished in the evening. Dad and I went to Novena and to confession in the evening. Dad busy across the street putting on wallboard. Ben's were here awhile in the p.m.

FRIDAY, JANUARY 6, 1950- First Friday and Epiphany. We all went to Mass this morning. Leonard and Pat and Gene went in our car, as he needed it today (having his graduation picture taken). Dad and I went with Maurice in his car. I wrote letters to Sister M, Minnie and Velva and cards to Wilma and Mary. Also sent for Pat's dress pattern. We ironed more today and about finished. Pat went Yoder's to a show. Paul's came, brought Ronnie.


SATURDAY, JANUARY 7, 1950- We all went to Mass with Maurice-being it was first Saturday-after breakfast Dad and I and Gene went downtown. Took Ronnie to catechism, got groceries and meat and did a little shopping. Pat baked a cake and I baked four dozen rolls. Before supper, Dad took Pat down with a cake and two dozen unrolls for the Juniors Bake Sale.

SUNDAY, JANUARY 8, 1950- Maurice took Dad and I to Mass. Pat played at 9:00, Gene served and Leonard sang. Ben's went to 10:15 Mass-left the children here-then they stayed here for dinner and spent the day here. In the evening-Ed's and Lyle's came-watched television and played canasta. Pauline Sueppel and Tommy Giblin also were out this evening.

MONDAY, JANUARY 9, 1950- A real nice day. Thawed quite a little. I washed and got them hung out but got them in early-as I was afraid of the weather over night. It did rain and snow a little and very strong winds. Leonard and Gene got to go to St. Mary's Muscatine for the game. Leonard didn't play much but Gene played quite a lot-each made points-big Team 41 to 21, freshmen lost

TUESDAY, JANUARY 10, 1950- A windy morning-much colder, but if cleared off. Wrote a letter to Lawrence since I have not heard from him yet. I got the clothes all ready for ironing and got an early dinner, then started ironing early after noon. Ironed quite steady all afternoon. Pat came home and helped so we finished it.

WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 11, 1950- Children all got off to school in good time. Pat had to play in High Mass today and freshman sing. Ben brought his family in early before he went to work at 8:00. I made a good dinner, chicken and noodles, apple pie. I mended a little today. Maurice took down the Christmas tree. We all went to the basketball game, Catholic Central of Ottumwa beat St. Mary's 58 to 28. Leonard got five points.

THURSDAY, JANUARY 12, 1950- A damp misty morning. Leonard took Gerald down to work as his car stopped for him last night. They all went to Mass, I was pretty tired today didn't get much done. Gerald helped Dad some in the afternoon. I wrote to brother John. We did not get to go to Novena. Maurice went to the K.C.'s. Leonard went to St. Pat's game, they won Ottumwa 42 to 38. Hurt my arm in the evening.

FRIDAY, JANUARY 13, 1950- I got up and helped get the children off to Mass. Then Ed's came and were here for dinner. Ed and Mary went downtown to sign corn selling papers. Left Allen here. Rather damp evening so Paul's didn't come in with Ronnie. Boy's at practice. My arm is still sore.


SATURDAY, JANUARY 14, 1950- Usual busy Saturday. Pat made a nice sponge cake. Expecting Betty to come up. Ben's came up in the p.m. My arm still hurts a lot. Dad and I went downtown to shop for groceries. Pat went to Bulgarelli's to night. Kept Ben's children here for supper and evening. Little hope we might sell the farm.

SUNDAY, JANUARY 15, 1950- Maurice, Dad and I went to 730 Mass. The others to 9:00. Pat expected Betty to come out but she didn't. Paul's came to 9:00 and stayed in on account of the mud. Ben's came in late and went to a 11:00 Mass at St. Pat's. They also stayed for dinner in the evening. Lyle's came also. Gordon Secrest came out to see television. Boys to practice in p.m.

MONDAY, JANUARY 16, 1950- I wrote to Brother John today also a card to Wilma. Went to Mass with the children. I did the washing got along fine with my sore arm. Had the kids hang out of basketful in the evening. Watch television in evening as usual. Boys went to practice. Little more hope of selling the farm.

TUESDAY, JANUARY 17, 1950- I went to Mass again with the children. Got the clothes ready for ironing. Pat was home in the a.m. , so ironed then and again in the evening and got it all done. Called Ben's early in the morning and told them the folks were coming to look at the farm but they didn't. Ben's and Wilma's both here in the evening.

WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 18, 1950- Didn't go to Mass this morning as thought the children would not come back but we had a flat tire so they had to use Maurice's car. Pat and Leonard came home for breakfast, Pat cleaned up the House some as she was having some of girls out in the p.m. Betty, Rosy, Joan and Shirley came before they went to Pauline's party. Dad and I and Maurice stayed home. Pat and and Gerald, Ginnie and Harry Smith all went to the big basketball game. St. Mary's beat St. Pat's 35 to 34. They all say Leonard played a good game.

THURSDAY, JANUARY 19, 1950- I went with the children to Mass then they were all home this a.m. Went to school then Novena in the p.m.. Much rejoicing over the St. Pat's victory. We stayed home in the evening. Ben's and Lyle's both came. Maurice to St. Pat's for stag supper. Little more hope of selling the farm.

FRIDAY, JANUARY 20, 1950- Slept to rather late this morning as the children didn't have to go school early and Leonard didn't have to go at all. Dad and I went downtown a little after 10:00 p.m. to sign the sealing papers and get the money. In the p.m. the folks came and signed the papers to buy the farm. Maurice took me down to the doctor and got my arm bandaged. Leonard got hurt at basketball practice, tore cartilage loose from kneecap.


SATURDAY, JANUARY 21, 1950- Ed is 39 years old today. Ben's came early before we were up and Joanne and the children stayed here while Ben worked in the forenoon. Then they went downtown in the pm. Dad and I also went downtown. Bought our new deep freeze. Paul's here in the evening to get Ronnie. Dad and Maurice went to the basketball game. Leonard going on crutches all day.

SUNDAY, JANUARY 22, 1950- Dad and I and Maurice and Gene went to 7:30 Mass. Pat went with Ed to 9:00. Betty didn't come, so Pat went with Yoder's to Washington. Louise and Carl came out for dinner, then they took Dad and I out for a ride in the p.m., West toward Cosgrove and East toward West Liberty, a nice afternoon. In the evening at had to go to Bulgarelli's. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Sueppel, three children and Ed's came over here.

MONDAY, JANUARY 23, 1950- The children went to Mass, then Leonard came home after his treatment on his knee so Dad can have the car and go down town. A very cloudy damp day. Ben's came to town to shop and pay bills. I had Kenny and Joey here, Mike went down with his folks to get his new wagon I did the washing, it was a fairly good-sized one, dried them all in the house. Maurice worked down cellar all day starting to get it cleaned up for the deep freeze.

TUESDAY, JANUARY 24, 1950- A rainy, drizzly damp morning. I wrote letters to Wilma and Elizabeth and also thanks to S. H. letter. The men, Dad and Maurice went up to the farm in the truck and got the cows and brought them up to the sale. I got the ironing ready for Pat's to do, then she went babysitting at the Engel's in the evening. Leonard went to the St. Pat's game, Gene to practice. Bad evening rain and sleet.

WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 25, 1950- A bad morning, rain and sleet all over. The children went to Mass. Wrote to Gertrude and a card for brooder house plans. Ben and Joanne came up and helped Dad figure out the things for the sale bill, then there went downtown in the pm. Dad and Maurice worked in the basement. We went to the basketball game in the evening. St. Mary's won over Central. Betty stayed all night.

THURSDAY, JANUARY 26, 1950- The children to late for Mass. Car would not the start (four below zero) so Maurice took them down. Maurice and I washed jars all afternoon, and I finished them in the p.m., and they carried lots of trash out of the cellar. Dad plastered up part of the wall getting a place ready for the new deep freeze. Tired but glad to get done. Gerald had company this evening. Kenny and Don brought their saxophone and played with Brother John.

FRIDAY, JANUARY 27, 1950- Parizeck called early to say Donahue was going out to the farm to look things over, so Maurice called Ben. Looked all a for him to come here for for list, but finally Bill Rowland came in the evening and made up the sale bill. Our new deep freeze was delivered before 10:00 a.m.. Gerald was still here to help put it in the basement. Leonard to went with the team to Fort Madison. They lost 47 to 30. Ben's and Lyle's here in the evening. Pat went to City high game.

SATURDAY, JANUARY 28, 1950- We didn't get up very early and Parizeck was out here before Dad got up. Pat worked good this a.m. then went down at 1:00 p.m. to help Shirley Gern at the organ. I did quite a good sized washing, then Pat finished all the ironing, mopped the floors and iced her cake. I got supper and did the dishes. Pat went babysitting. Leonard went with Secrest to a show. Gene went with Paul's.

SUNDAY, JANUARY 29, 1950- Dad and I, Leonard and Gene went with Maurice to 730 Mass. Pat went with Gerald to 9:00. Ed's left Allen and Donald here while they went to Mass. Donald got his face hurt badly in a coasting accident yesterday. Ben's came up to Mass. Mickey might have the mumps but they don't really think so. No company this evening, only Freddie Furhmiester stopped to take Leonard with him

MONDAY, JANUARY 30, 1950- I went to Mass with the kids. Maurice took us. Pat played. After breakfast I wrote letters to Brother John and Lawrence then got clothes ready for washing. Ben's came up for dinner, then went downtown in the pm. I did my washing in the pm. Dad and Maurice went downtown in the a.m., got all of the meat out of the locker, had 3 bu. baskets full. The boys went to practice in the evening. Snowed about all day. Dad got a heat lamp to help start the car.

TUESDAY, JANUARY 31, 1950- I got the children around a quite early. Dad intended to take them to Mass and stay down town to get to car fixed but car wouldn't start so Maurice got up and took to the children to Mass as Pat had to play. I missed today. Got the ironing ready so Pat did part of it in the evening. She's also went out sliding with Ginnie for a while. Paul's came for awhile and got some sale bills.

WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 1, 1950- Couldn't get car started again today even with the new battery so had to take Maurice's. Dad and I went with the children. I wrote letters in the forenoon. In the pm Ben's came up and I kept the children while they shopped downtown. Dad and Maurice got the separator so they can start to use it this evening. Another fresh cow today. St. Mary's lost to Burlington by three points.

THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 2, 1950- Candlemas Day. Dad and I went to Mass with children and again couldn't get the car started and had to take Maurice's. Dad and Maurice went out to the farm in the pm and brought in the the load of corn. In the forenoon they took sale bills to Hills, Riverside, and Sharon Center. In the evening Dad and I went to Novena and to Confession. Wilma and Clarence came up after going to the hospital to see Mildred. Leonard and some of the boys worked at school in evening.

FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 3, 1950- St. Blase Day. Maurice, Dad and I all went to and the Mass besides the kids, First Friday. Pat played the Mass. I wrote letters to Cecilia and Verna. Dad and Maurice went out to the farm. Made two trips today. In the evening Leonard went to Clinton with the basketball team. Frank hauled the seniors up. In the evening Ed's, Paul's and Lyle's were here. Pat was babysitting.

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 4, 1950- Maurice went to Fort Madison with Leonard. We all went to Mass, First Saturday and Pat played, even Ronnie went today. After breakfast Gene and Ronald and Pat rode downtown with Dad as he was going out to the farm. I did some washing today and also made pie crusts. Pat baked cakes also cupcakes. I went downtown with Dad and Leonard and got a new suitcase and oilcloth. In the evening we had Ben's children and three of Paul's while they all went to confession. Pat was babysitting at the Bulgarelli's.

SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 5, 1950- Dad and I and Leonard and Gene went to 7:30 Mass. Pat went to 9:00, had to play. Gertrude and Nick came down in time for the 11:30 Mass, were for dinner and supper. They took Leonard downtown to go the tournament and brought Bessie out so she was here for supper too. Pat went with Mrs. Yagenbbieger and girls to Davenport for the tournament. Ed's here in the evening. St. Mary's won their first game at tournament.

MONDAY, FEBRUARY 6, 1950- Dad and I took Pat and Gene to Mass. Ed came down to help Dad and Maurice get the cows Horny and Whitey loaded up to go out to the farm and to help get ready for the sale. I wrote to Brother John, then started baking my apple pies. I made seven good-sized ones and one small one . Then I started washing and got it finished. Pat went back to Davenport to tournament, rode up then back in Monsignor's car.

TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 7, 1950- We took Pat and Gene to Mass again. Dad and Maurice and Ed went to the farm again to get ready for the sale. I starched clothes and hung them up. Then worked at salad and other things getting ready for the dinner at the sale. Cloudy but we are hoping for a good sale day tomorrow. St. Mathias Muscatine won the tournament. St. Mary's Clinton, second. St. Pat's Iowa City , third. St. Peter's Keokuk, fourth. St. Mary's Muscatine, consolation.


WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 8, 1950- Got up at 5:30 a m. It was raining. . Very dismal looking for the sale. Made scalloped corn, got breakfast then went to Mass with the children. Leonard brought me home. Joyce had the measles so many couldn't go to the sale. I didn't have any babies to take of. So sent out about all the dinner. Then spent the day alone, had a pretty good crowd at the sale in spite of bad weather. Dad was well satisfied. Pat played Mass for Jean Klein. A cloudy, foggy, drippy day

THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 9, 1950- Dad and I went to Mass with the children, were a little late, High Mass. No one playing so Pat went up and played from the of Offertory on. Dad went out to the farm and a.m.to haul in some machinery. Got home in time for dinner. Maurice out on his route in the p.m. Man here to rent the house. Gerald stayed home in the evening. Very good television tonight. Pat had to baby sit at Engel's.

FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 10, 1950- Dad and I went with the children to Mass, a little late again. Ed stopped in this morning, he had brought the children to school. I sent for a sent for a set of three pins and for flower seeds to Ma Perkins and Kitchens Club. Dad made another trip out to the farm in the old truck and hauled in some things. In the p.m he went downtown. The boys went to Oxford for a basketball game. St. Mary's got beat but the small team won their game. Pat and the girls in her class went to Shirley Hurt's for supper then to Oxford for the ball games.

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 11, 1950- We didn't get up to early but were up when Ben brought Joanne and the children out here to spend the day. They stayed for dinner and supper. In the pm Ben and Joanne went out to the doctor. In the evening they went to a show. Pat went with them to see Jolson Sings Again. Maurice and Leonard went to the Iowa Illinois game. Iowa won 70 to 65. Dad and I and Gene kept the children, watched the television game of Moline and Davenport. Davenport won.

SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 12, 1950- Dad and I, Maurice, Leonard and Gene went to 7:30 Mass. Pat went to 9:00, Leonard took her down, she came home with Ed's. Joyce and Alan stayed here. Ben's stayed here all day. Gertrude and Nick came just as dinner was ready. They also stayed for supper. In the evening live with it would be a part on court dropped Lyle's and Clarence and families came, spent the evening playing canasta. Gerald got home in good time from Cedar Falls. Leonard had trouble getting home, he ran out of gas. Snowed and blew hard this evening.

MONDAY, FEBRUARY 13, 1950- Dad and I went to Mass with the children. Then after breakfast the men went with Mr. Smith out to the farm to haul in the last of our machinery. I worked around as usual. The boys is went to basketball practice for the last time.

TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 14, 1950- We did not get to Mass this morning but the children went as usual. I did a very big washing today, to get things out of the way before butchering. The men went down and helped Margaret and Bob. In the pm they worked to get things ready for butchering. Ben and Joanne and the children came in the evening.


WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 15, 1950- We butchered today, the men went down early with the truck to get the big hog. Ben was working so he brought Joanne and the children up early. Joanne helped us awfully good with the butchering. We didn't quite get all lard done. I sure was tired. Ben's were here for supper. We all went to the same Mary's, St. Pat's game. St. Mary's got beat 59 to 39. Leonard got to four new

THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 16, 1950- The children took the car to go to Mass, they were a little late and then they got in a collision and got our car laid up. Pat called to tell me about it. Maurice and Dad went down to see about it and get to car taken to Smash Em- Fix Em. I finished the lard in the forenoon, got over 20 gal.. In the pm we did all the sausage and putting in the deep freeze. Got our new bed springs.

FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 17, 1950- A busy hard day cleaning up after all the grease and butchering. We also got a lot of the lard put in boxes, also some wrapped up and put in the deep freeze. Pat had to go Bulgarelli's after school, so it put lots of extra work on me. Paul's came in the evening and left Ronnie here. Leonard and Gene went to Cedar Rapids to play Iowa City. Leonard got his knee hurt badly, ligaments torn again, after four minutes play. Took him to the hospital and took X-rays. Put a big cast on his leg.

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 18, 1950- A very busy day they took Ronnie and Gene downtown for Ronnie to go to catechism. Dad help us a little. Father Schmitz came out to visit to Leonard and get his basketball clothes. Ben's came in this evening-left the children here while the went to a show with Mickey. Paul's came for Ronnie. Ed's came to see if anyone could help of them out tomorrow.

SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 19,1950- And I went to 6:00 Mass with Gerald. Ed came down and got me, we stopped here at home, and I got dress and things. I stayed there all day helping take care of Alan who had the measles. Dean stayed home and helped me. They left at 8:00 and got home at 5:00. They brought Pat's home with them from Elizabeth's where she was taking care of their measles children. The men got along alone all day with their meals etc. Secrest was here in the evening, took Leonard for a little ride.

MONDAY, FEBRUARY 20,1950- Ben's brought the children up early so they could play while they moved. I got dinner and supper both for them. They get along pretty good but not quite done, so they stayed over there all night. Frank Suepel call in the pm visit Leonard for quite awhile. Bob and Margaret and Joanne came out to see about the plumbing job.

TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 21, 1950- Got to be day. Maurice took Pat and Gene to Mass. Then Dad and Maurice went out to the farm for a truckload of things. They took Leonard as far as a school for his first day back as School. I did the first washing of the week and, got done before noon. Bob Richie came in the pm, measured up and planned for setting up the water softener and heater.


WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 22, 1950- Ash Wednesday and the first day of Lent. All went to Mass, even Gerald. Bob Richie about 9:00 a.m. and worked all day. Got the heater and softener installed. Paul's came in the evening and left the children here and went to church with us. Watched television after we got home. The stayed for awhile.

THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 23, 1950- We went to Mass. After breakfast I got to the washing started and wrote to Lawrence. Dad also wrote to Lawrence and sent the payment and interest on the farm. I also sent for plastic bags and Leonard's picture. Ben's left the children here in the evening while they went to a show. Joanne's birthday. Jerry Cunningham came out this evening to visit Leonard and watch television. Snowed hard this afternoon and evening.

FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 24, 1950- We went to Mass. It was only four below zero and we have about 4 in. of snow. I wrote to Sister Margaretta left to send her the information she wanted also wrote cards to Wilma and Gertrude. Dad went to Parizeck's sale with Ben. Gene made Stations so he could stay home with children this evening, but no one came so he and Leonard and were home alone.

SATURDAY, February 25, 1950- We all went to Mass. Pat played the Requiem then we were busy all afternoon. Pat made her first Angel Food Cake. I got the head meat cooked for Head Cheese. I got the crust and cherrys ready for Sunday pies, but didn't get to make them. In the pm we went down town and got our car back from Smash'em-Fix'em. I helped Pat shop for new clothes, then Dad and I bought the new bathroom outfit and sink.

SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 26, 1950- Dad and I, Maurice, Leonard, and Gene went to 730 Mass. Pat and Gerald went to 9:00 as Pat had to play. Paul's and Ed went to 9:00 and we had the children here. Paul's stayed for dinner and went to Devotions in the pm. Ben's were here for supper then went to a show and left the children here. Lyle's came in the evening-watched television. Went home early. Secrest came out and took Leonard to a show in the evening.

MONDAY, FEBRUARY 27TH 1950- We went to Mass this morning then we were looking for Bob to come out, so I didn't wash. , Bob was sick and couldn't come- but I had plenty to do-in getting a good supper for company as Gerald brought Pauline out for supper. Then his musician friends came out in the evening we had lots of music.

TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 28 ,1950- We went to Mass-the senior boys are singing the Mass this week, a pretty good today. I did the washing and a pretty big one at that. In the evening Ben's came over and got their books straightened up.

WEDNESDAY, MARCH 1, 1950- Another morning we all went to Mass. I made pies this morning, got a good dinner, then decided to go to PTA meeting. Mary came and took me. A typical first of March, strong winds, sunshine, then a blizzard. In the evening we went to Devotions. Ben and Joanne went to Oxford and left the children here.

THURSDAY, MARCH 2, 1950- We all went to Mass-and about 10:30 Ben brought the children and Joanne here for the day. In the forenoon we were busy getting dinner. The kids came home for dinner, no School this pm on account of a scarcity of coal. Joanne in the children for supper,as Ben had trouble with the truck. Wilma's here in the evening. Bob Richie here putting in the new sink.

FRIDAY, MARCH 3, 1950- All went to Mass. Dad and I went down early to the real estate office to settle up about the farm. We did not get out until noon. Then we also went down again and did some shopping and get groceries. Pat stay down for the afternoon with Shirley and Rosy, to visit the sick. In the evening Ed's and Ben's came and went to church. Dad stayed home to help Bob.

SATURDAY, MARCH 4,1950- Went to Mass as usual, then busy cleaning up in the kitchen after our new sink was installed. Joanne and children walked over after dinner. Dad bought furnace, stoker, pipes, controls, sidearm heater, water heater, Half ton coal for $75. Ben's put meat in our deep freeze, were here for supper. Went to confession. Sent a letter to Lawrence. Gertrude and Nick came

SUNDAY, MARCH 5, 1950- The boys went to 6:00, Mass. Dad and I and Maurice to 7:30. Womens' Sunday. Then Pat and Gerald, Ed's and Ben's went to 9:00. Gertrude and Nick to 10:15 Mass. Ben's went to Carl's for dinner. All we had was Gertrude and Nick here. Pat went to a show in the pm with some of the girls. We went to Stations at 4:00. Ben's here for supper and in the evening Ed's also came out. They played cards.

MONDAY, MARCH 6, 1950- A wrote to Brother John. Did the washing. Had Ben's here for dinner, as Ben helped haul the rest of the furnace. In the pm Ben and Joanne went to the doctor at Oxford. I washed getting things sort of cleaned up for Bob to start working at putting in the bath room fixtures. Ben's here for supper. Gertrude and Nick went with Maurice and Gene to Minnesota and Iowa basketball game. Minnesota won. Ben's to two boys to get a hair cut.

TUESDAY, MARCH 7, 1950- We went to Mass. Ben worked to today on his car to get ready for their trip to Missouri. Bob came out to put in the bathroom fixtures. Dad and I went downtown to get a floor tiles for the bathroom. Got them down and the evening. Bob got the pieces all set and stool set. Pat ironed in the evening. I was awfully tired tonight and had a backaches.


WEDNESDAY, MARCH 8, 1950- We want to Mass. I feel better. Bob out again , finished putting in fixtures and got them all hooked up by noon. All seems very nice. Pat gave it a good cleaning. Ben worked all day on his car again. Got home and then got stuck getting into his place, so Gene went over to help him out. They did not get to church. It was real cold tonight.

THURSDAY, MARCH 9, 1950- We went to Mass as usual. Ben's came over in good time. Ben took his pickup and Dad and Maurice went with him to haul our coal. Than he and Joanne went downtown before dinner. In the pm he get his car back from being washed and greased. In the pm they got their hair washed and their baths taken before they went home- getting ready for their trip. Leonard and Pat-trouble at School.

FRIDAY, MARCH 10, 1950- Woke up hearing the telephone ring at 5:20 a m. Ben's had started on their trip and had car trouble, got back as far as Miller's. Dad got up and went after them. We talk Ben in to fixing it up again, so they stayed here all day. Dad and Maurice and by night they had it going again and so they stayed here all night in the warm. Joanne went with us to Mass this morning and also to the Stations in the evening. Sister Dolors called me and talked a long time, got everything straightened out. Finished our ironing.

SATURDAY, MARCH 11, 1950- We went to Mass. Ben's left around the 7:00 am. Didn't hear any more from them so must of got through. We were busy cleaning and cooking, getting ready for company tomorrow. Lyle's are coming. Pat had to go to work at 6:00 at Bulgarelli's, so I worked late getting everything finished up. Paul's came out for awhile. We had a quiet evening.

SUNDAY, MARCH 12, 1950- I went with Leonard and Gene to 6:00 Mass, then I stayed down to help cook breakfast for the Holy Name men's breakfast. Dad, Maurice and Gerald all went. Then we got home around 10 a.m.. In a little while Ed's came and I asked to stay for dinner. Lyle's came a little later . We had a good dinner and a nice time. Pat and Libb's girls went to a show then to devotions. Dad and I , Maurice, Ed and Mary, Libb and Lyle went to Stations.

MONDAY, MARCH 13, 1950- We went to Mass. I wrote a letter to Brother John, card to Gertrude and Nick. Then I washed most of the day, a big washing, hung my lines full, and the two racks full Pat had to go to Bulgarelli's again. Leonard and Gordon to play practice. Greece to package from Mr.?, Wodshodsky apron for me, cigars for Dad. Quite tired tonight but glad to have the washing done

TUESDAY, MARCH 14,1950- Mass again. Got the clothes off line early as a were blowing. Got some dampened but did not give any ironing done. Pat cleaned floors-expecting company-no one game but Ginnie I wrote to Mrs. Wodahodsky and Myrtle. Got a pretty big supper, so it took time in the pm. Gerald eat at 4 today. Dad started making bathroom cupboards.


WEDNESDAY, MARCH 15, 1950- Mass as usual. Maurice went to the Jefferson Hotel for dinner and a meeting of OCCO men today. Dad about finished my cupboards, dragged the roads and etc. etc.. We got quiet a lot of the rough ironing out of the way today. I wrote to a big letter to Minnie. Dad and I and Maurice went to devotions this evening. Lyle's came and brought Dad a bushel of apples.

THURSDAY, MARCH 16TH 1950- We all went to Mass. It's winter all over again. Pat played the Mass, every day this week but Friday. We finished the ironing this evening. Pat also washed the rose part of the bathroom and Maurice started painting green part. I wrote to aunt Anna today. The Richies out here this evening.

FRIDAY, MARCH 17, 1950- All went to Mass. I wrote to Brother John and Wilma. No news from Ben and Joanne yet. The new bathroom set was delivered for the new house. Dad worked to cross a street in the a.m. and went downtown after dinner to buy the pipes and fittings for the across the way. In the evening Dad and I and and Maurice and Pat and Leonard went to stations.

SATURDAY, MARCH 18,1950- We all went to Mass. Pat had to play. Then we spent a busy day clearing and getting the House cleaned up. Pat was having Betty over tomorrow. I got my clothes ready for tomorrow. In the pm Dad and I and Leonard went to confession and downtown. In the evening and Leonard went with Gordon and Pat went to work.

SUNDAY, MARCH 19, 1950- Pat's 17th birthday. She had Betty out for dinner. Dad, Maurice and I went to 7:30 Mass, then I stayed down for the Catholic ladies day of recollection until after the stations and benediction. Then Dad and I and Pat went to Bessie's for a little visit, them home. No company this evening. Pat went to a show with Leonard and Gordon.

MONDAY, MARCH 20, 1950- We went to Mass as usual. I did a very big washing. The school kids went to their high school tournament. Seniors beat the juniors. Sophomore beat the freshman. And then it's over for another year. No company this evening, but a good television program on.

TUESDAY,MONDAY 21, 1950- All went to Mass. The children only have to go to school this a.m. on a oount of state basketball tournament. Bob Richie out working today, starting to put in the bathroom set in the new house. Ben's came home just after we were through with dinner, they stayed all night. Leonard and Pat and Gordon went to the basketball games at the field House. Wilma's came out this evening, saw girl wrestling. Bought my seeds.


WEDNESDAY, MARCH 22, 1950- All went to Mass, then homeland on Ben's family breakfast. Bob Richie came out again today. Ben went downtown in the am. Got Joanne's watch and iron. In the pm they went to Oxford to see the doctor, she got stronger medicine. Then they went home, got stuck with the car, then came back and ate supper here. Then went home with a tractor and t trailer. We all went to church. Pat went to the game this pm. " Sleepers

THURSDAY, MARCH 23, 1950- We went to Mass. Dad and Maurice hauled some hay this a.m.. Dad got paint for Ben's upstairs. We got a little ironing done and the House cleaned up some. Pat home this pm. Also churned in the evening. Betty and Gordon came out to see television. Louise, Carl and Charles also came out for the evening.

FRIDAY, MARCH 24, 1950- We went to Mass. After breakfast Ben came over to his coal. Dad went along over there then to help paint the upstairs rooms. I wrote to Gertrude also thanks letter. In the evening Gene went over and helped Ben's get the trailer ready so they could come over and go to and devotions. Ed's and Paul's also came.

SATURDAY, MARCH 25, 1950- Gerald had an automobile accident this pm. We went to Mass, then after breakfast Dad went over to help at Ben's to finished the walls, after taking Gene and Ronnie down for Ronnie's catechism. Pat and I were busy all day baking for bake sale. She baked an angel food and I baked rolls. I made a cake and hot cross buns, she also baked another cake and I washed for Gertrude. Some of us worked late finishing with the work, ironing etc. Ben's here for supper then to town in the pm for show. Ed's and Paul's here this evening.

SUNDAY, MARCH 26, 1950- We all went to 730 Mass. A rainy morning. Pat had to go back down to help at the bake sale. Gertrude and Nick stayed all night at Lone tree, came back before 1130 Mass and got their clothes. Ben's went to allow 1130 Mass, couldn't get their car started. Gene went with Ben's to Ed's in the pm and stayed for supper. Leonard went to 9:00 Stations at St. Wenceslaus with Gordon. Dad and I went to a movie as School,King of Kings then to the stationsZ. Pat was riding with Pauline, Sladek and Tommy Giblin

MONDAY, MARCH 27, 1950- Went to Mass. Then after breakfast I wrote to Brother John and then did the big washing. It was quite windy. I only had them out a short-time but they dried quite well. I got them mostly easily dried in the evening and dampened, ready for the ironing. Gene went to the first basketball practice.

TUESDAY, MARCH 28, 1950- We went to Mass Then I ironed of basketful of ironing, got dishes done. Then Wilma came and left the boys here while she did her Easter shopping, was here for dinner.Ben's came over. Joanne and the children here in in the pm while Ben helped Dad two hours, they were here for supper in the evening

WEDNESDAY, MARCH 29, 1950- We went to Mass. I straighten up the House, got dinner, then in the pm went down for devotions at 3:00 p.m. while Dad went downtown. We brought the school kids home with us. I mopped the kitchen, got supper while Pat swept floors and practiced. In the evening Maurice, Gerald, Leonard, Pat, Gene, and Ginnie all went to see the basketball game between Globe Trotters and the Twins. Ed's also went and left the children here

THURSDAY, MARCH 30, 1950- We went to Mass as usual. I wrote a letter to Brother John, then washed some things besides dining room and bedroom drapes and three more rugs. Ben and Mickey over in the pm with the tractor to get the drag to drag his road. Pat babysitting at the Engal's this evening. Ben and Joanne and family over in the evening. Also Kinney and Gordon came out. Leonard got a bunch of clothes from Maynard .

FRIDAY, March 31, 1950- To Mass again this morning, then I sent off different letters and donations. Father Flanagan Home, Christmas seals, Easter cards, birthday etc. cards, tabernacle and purgatory, also sent for Dad's insurance policy. Dad churned for me after dinner. Dad bargained for new Nash car today but they didn't get it delivered. Gerald got his Ford. Paul's here in the evening to go to devotions, also Ben's. Ben started to work this pm.
