Jan - March

April

MONDAY, APRIL 1, 1935 - The girls papered the ceiling in the front room. the boys went after a load of machinery. Ed & I went to hospital in evening.

TUESDAY, APRIL 2, 1935 - The girls washed - Ed, Stephen & Paul brought another load from the other place - grinder, corn - flowers etc. Stephen went home. Ed & I to hospital in evening. Papa had his cast made so they could fit a brace for him.

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 3, 1935 - Girls finished papering room. Started to sow oats. Ed & I went to city with cream & eggs and then to hospital and back to hospital in the evening. Stayed at hospital while others went to devotions.

THURSDAY, APRIL 4, 1935 - Boys hauled corn. Clutch went out & they put in new one. Girls papered the living room & worked till 12 at night to finish it. got phone connected up, paid for corn, went to hospital in evening. Papa sat up all evening with us. got oil heater from grandma.

FRIDAY, APRIL 5, 1935 - Went to mass for First Friday- Ed got clover seed & sowed 30 acres. Paul harrowed. Papa got his brace - was dressed up when we went to see him.

SATURDAY, APRIL 6, 1935 - Harold, Veatress & Bessie stopped. Our Silver wedding anniversary. Mass said for us in the morning at 7 a.m. All went but Maurice. All received communion that could. Brought Papa home from the hospital. Louise came home in the evening.

SUNDAY, APRIL 7, 1935 - All went to Mass & rec'd Holy Communion Eliz stayed home with little ones & Papa. Stephen came & Harold, Veatress & Bessie stopped for supper.


MONDAY, APRIL 8, 1935 - Girls washed - Boys hauled a load of corn & sowed 10 a. oats in p.m. and disked it in. Papa took a good walk around after dinner.

TUESDAY, APRIL 9, 1935 - Wilma ironed - Ed sowed clover seed in the forenoon & disked in the p.m. - Paul harrowed but didn't get done.

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 10, 1935 - I didn't feel so good. Lawrence in bed all day. Girls papered dining room. Rained in morning so took the children to school & got them. Ed went to city - ordered the baby chicks.

THURSDAY APRIL 11, 1935 - Rainy yet took children to school. Papa, Ed & I went to city in p.m. Papa went to see the Dr. Paid a payment on chickens.

FRIDAY, APRIL 12, 1935 - Papa and I went to afternoon devotions, Papa drove car for first time. Got paint & wall board for kitchen, put on wall board.

SATURDAY, APRIL 13, 1935 - Raked in garden and cleaned up trash in it, set out chrysanthemums. Ed went to Nichols in eve stayed all night. Papa took E & G to confession.

SUNDAY, APRIL 14, 1935 - Ed came home in a.m. Wieskamp's & Stephen came in p.m. Papa and I and Lizzie & Will went to devotions.


MONDAY, APRIL 15, 1935 - Ed & Paul hauled a load. Wilma painted kitchen.

TUESDAY, APRIL 16, 1935 - Washed - Ed & Paul hauled load of corn in a.m. Papa & girls went to town in p.m.- Ed & Paul got stuck with their second load of corn. Papa went after them.

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 17, 1935 - Ed ordered suit. Papa & I & baby went with boys to W. Liberty, they fixed truck & came home - Papa & I went on to Muscatine. Papa & I went to Confession.

THURSDAY, APRIL 18, 1935 - Papa & I & Eliz went to Mass. Boys hauled corn - Papa & I went to Holy Hour & then Papa Paul & Maurice went to Ia. City.

FRIDAY, APRIL 19, 1935 - Good Friday went to Mass. I stayed home in evening others went. Paul took mumps. Lester was out & they bought truck.

SATURDAY, APRIL 20, 1935 - Eliz had mumps in morning. Maurice in evening, Papa & I went to Mass in morning. Ed went to I. City in evening.

SUNDAY, APRIL 21, 1935 - Easter, Wilma had mumps. Derksen's here in p.m.- also Brugman's - Papa Ed & Wilma went for ride.


MONDAY, APRIL 22, 1935 - I started milking. Girls felt pretty sick. Ed plowed the garden & then started plowing. Papa went to City.

TUESDAY, APRIL 23, 1935 - Ed plowed Papa went to City. Fixed garden fence up.

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 24, 1935 - Fixed garden fence. Made garden. Father Welsh called. John came home with mumps.

THURSDAY, APRIL 25, 1935 - Washed - Father Strub called. Papa bought tractor, cultivator and planter & plow.

FRIDAY, APRIL 26, 1935 - Leonard has mumps. Gertrude stayed home with mumps - Wilma ironed. Ed plowed - Got new tractor Papa disked for first time, Gerald's mumps showed up in evening.

SATURDAY, APRIL 27, 1935 - Papa disked. Papa & I went to I.City in forenoon - set out cabbage & tomato plants sewed seed for plants. Cleaned brooder house.

SUNDAY, APRIL 28, 1935 - Papa, Ed, Paul, B.L. & I went to Church. Ed went to Nichols and Davenport. Papa baby & I went to W. Liberty and out to Bessie's in p.m. stayed for supper.

MONDAY, APRIL 29, 1935 - Ed & Paul plowed - Papa & I wet to Ia. City and got our chickens in afternoon.

TUESDAY, APRIL 30, 1935 - Washed - Father Strub called & gave the girls their part in the play

WEDNESDAY, MAY 1, 1935 - Ironed - Ed bought his new car. Started feeding chickens - Girls went to practice.

THURSDAY, MAY 2, 1935 - Men worked on our car. Aunt Anna & Huberts here in the p.m. Rainy & cold - Ed & girls went to card party. Papa, Lawrence & I to Confession.

FRIDAY, MAY 3, 1935 - Cod packed 16 qts corn beef, men worked n car. froze tomatoes. Busy as usual with chickens - went to Mass- Ed & girls went to shower at Frantz - temperature 25 before we went to bed.

SATURDAY, MAY 4,1935-Cold packed 16 qt corn beef. We worked as usual - men on car - finished it - Ed went to Nichols in evening & girs went to practice. Boys helped me out good.

SUNDAY, MAY 5, 1935-Paul stayed home with little folks and ones with mumps - Gertrude sick - Bud here in p.m.- Also Ed brought Marcella out. Girls practiced after May devtions.

MONDAY, MAY 6, 1935-Men finished ence. We worked in garden. good weather. put in dahlia bulbs.

TUESDAY, MAY 7, 1935-Papa went to sale. washed - put in flower seed - more dahlias - Ed & Paul finished plowing. Girls practiced in evening - Ed discovers he has mumps.


WEDNESDAY, MAY 8, 1935-Sent letter to Louise - Wilma ironed - panted all early potatoes. Girls practiced Patty got the mumps.

THURSDAY, MAY 9, 1935-Bernard had the mumps - Wilma & Papa went to Muscatine to see Louise - Paul plowed melon patch, planted beans put out more dahlias.

FRIDAY, MAY 10, 1935-Papa worked on yard fence. Recıd Marys Mothers Day card. Ed doesnıt feel so good. Papa & I & Gertrude went to May devotions took G & G along to Ia City afterward planted cucumbers.

SATURDAY, MAY 11, 1935-Saturdays work. Girls practiced. Men set up new corn planter.

SUNDAY, MAY 12, 1935-Motherıs Day - Geraldıs First Communion day- nice & war - Ed feeling pretty bad. we went to devotions in p.m.

MONDAY, MAY 13, 1935-Ed still pretty sick.

TUESDAY, MAY 14, 1935-Papa & I went to city got Ed some medicine.


WEDNESDAY, MAY 15, 1935-Ed started feeling better.

THURSDAY, MAY 16,1935-Papa & I went to Ia City again - saw Will 7 Frances. Girls went to practice. Father Collins said Mass & gave his blessing.

FRIDAY, MAY 17, 1935-Put seed corn in testers. ed feeling better, went outside some - girls went to practice.

SATURDAY, MAY 18, 1935-Papa, Ed & I went to Muscatine and got louise, stopped at W. liberty & haroldıs on way home also I City, got my ferns.

SUNDAY, MAY 19,1935- Father Collins said (?) first Mass. Rainy day. Bessie, Grandma & Haroldıs here for supper didnıt get to devotions in evening.

MONDAY, MAY 20, 1935- Ed took Louise home in forenoon, got radio in p.m. as Papa & Ed went to city. Motherıs & Cecelia Foley here in evening.

TUESDAY, MAY 21, 1935-Washed - Edle here in p.m. took seed corn out of testers I think - girls practiced.


WEDNESDAY, MAY 22, 1935-Boys plowing across the road for soy beans. Wilma ironed, girls practiced, Got boys new suits.

THURSDAY, MAY 23, 1935-Put seed corn in tester. Ed finished plowwing across the road. We went to play - Paul stayed home. Louise drove out in Mrs. Huertleys car, brought Bud, Eleanor & Dorothy Ann.

FRIDAY, MAY 24, 1935-Started planting corn in late p.m.

SATURDAY, MAY 25, 1935-Planted corn all day. Papa until about 4 p.m. & then Ed started.

SUNDAY, MAY 26, 1935-Bernard & maurice made their Solemn Communion. Folks went to devotions in p.m. I stayed home - Ed, Ed w. & Bud went to Davenport.

MONDAY, MAY 27, 1935-Girls papered our room upstairs. Took seed corn out of tester. Mr France here, men went to city. Vaccinated calves. france girls here. Mrs. Jenn, Helen & Harold here in evening.

TUESDAY, MAY 28,1935-Girls finished papering front room and papered hall.Wilma went to meeting to plan for picnic.

WEDNESDAY, MAY 29, 1935-Washed and girls got ready for picnic. Papa & I went to City got Elizabeth skirt & blouse. Baby shoes. set out first sweet potatoes.

THURSDAY,MAY 30, 1935-Decoration Day, also Holy Day. Papa & Icalled on sisters in p.m.Had 9:30 Mass in morning.

FRIDAY, MAY 31, 1935-Men planted sod and disked some in morning glory field. Last day of school, planted last garden. Sent letter to Sr Margaretta.

 


June

SATURDAY, JUNE 1, 1935-Started planting across road. Rainy weather in p.m.- just poured in evening & night. went to city got Gertrude dress & Lawrence pants. Ed & girls went to dance, but wasnıtany, so went to show.

SUNDAY, JUNE 2, 1935-All went to 7:30 Mass but Elizabeth. Papa & I Gertrude, John, Leonard & Patty went to Weiskamps in p.m. Program in evening.

MONDAY, JUNE 3, 1935 - Ed through with work. all went to Mass. Maurice stayed home., big reunion with the Milders, 48 here in the afternoon. Rain in evening, hard lighting.

TUESDAY, JUNE 4, 1935 - Ed finished planting corn across road - Papa & I went Muscatine & took Wilma to Roach's. Rec'd Louise letter, (?) & set out last sweet potatoes.

WEDNESDAY, JUNE 5, 1935 - Papa got new suit of clothes. finished ironing - men worked at ditches. Worked in garden - Walter White brought soy beans.

THURSDAY, JUNE 6, 1935 - Will, Frances & Mary Agnes here for dinner. Men pumped water out of cellar and worked around.

FRIDAY, JUNE 7, 1935 - Men shelled seed corn & ground corn for chickens - First Friday all went to Mass - but Ed, Paul, Johnnie & little folks. Papa left at 3:30 for Davenport & retreat.


SATURDAY, JUNE 8, 1935 - Ed & I went to city with cream & eggs & do shopping. Ed & Paul went to Confession in evening - they drained water out of ditches.

SUNDAY, JUNE 9, 1935 - Papa returned home from retreat about 7:30. Ed went with Bud on motorcycle to Cedar Rapids in p.m. Eliz stayed home from first Mass, went to second.

MONDAY, JUNE 10, 1935 - Papa & I went in with cream, they planted the piece of corn along the highway - warm day.

TUESDAY, JUNE 11, 1935 - Washed & baked 15 loaves of bread, had 20 pr overalls in wash. Ed finished planting that field & pulverized in p.m. Papa planted hybrid corn in p.m.

WEDNESDAY, JUNE 12, 1935 - Started cultivating. Papa finished planting corn. Ed & I went up with cream and on to W. Liberty - Ed had tooth treated at dentist.

THURSDAY, JUNE 13, 1935 - Ed finished first cultivation on west field & sod - worked in garden.

FRIDAY, JUNE 14, 1935 - Papa & I went to city. Shopped around looking at stoves etc. Smiths called in the evening.


SATURDAY, JUNE 15, 1935 - Good day for work, Paul finished with the hoeing corn field over west. We went after Louise & Wilma in the evening. Ed stayed all night at Buds.

SUNDAY, JUNE 16, 1935 - Rain - Bud brought Ed home in his car - Papa, Ed, Eliz & Louise took Wilma to Ottumwa for the retreat.

MONDAY, JUNE 17, 1935 - We took Louise home in the morning left about 8:30. Rained on us coming home. Got our new gasoline stove in Muscatine. Came home past Schooley's & visited Grandpa awhile.

TUESDAY, JUNE 18, 1935 - Went to city in p.m. - ordered our springs 7 mattresses - Ed took his car radio up. Laurence got his gopher bounty of 60 cts. Rainy weather all the time.

WEDNESDAY, JUNE 19, 1935 - Watched the high water come up - got so high the cars couldn't get through by noon - water over road both sides of bridge.

THURSDAY, JUNE 20, 1935 - Went to Ottumwa for Wilma left about 7:15 (Maurice & Bernard went to Mass.) got home about 5:30.Eliz washed. Boys got 2 fish, truck went through.

FRIDAY, JUNE 21, 1935 - Fish for breakfast & supper - cleaned up house - Ed took his radio to Bessie's, Papa went to town &Elizabeth ironed - went to Brugman's in evening.


SATURDAY, JUNE 22, 1935 - Papa & I went to town - got flowers for Eliz dress. We got ready for Sunday dinner. Ed & girls went to dance at Frances.

SUNDAY, JUNE 23, 1935 - Big Sunday dinner & supper served at Church - girls & I helped at noon - Papa all day - lovely weather.

MONDAY, JUNE 24, 1935 - First decent day to work in the field or some time - we planted late potatoes & cucumbers, set out cabbages & tomato plants. Papa cultivate d potatoes, truck, etc. Ed plowed 30 acres corn.

TUESDAY, JUNE 25, 1935 - Rain early in morning. Papa & Ed went to city with the cream & to the sale for awhile- Wilma & I sewed on her waist & finished it.

WEDNESDAY, JUNE 26, 1935 - Hard rain the morning. Washed - got our order. Ed fishing.

THURSDAY, JUNE 27, 1935 - Washed - boys & Papa went with Frantz's fishing in evening - brought home big mess - we had for dinner - supper Friday.

FRIDAY, JUNE 28, 1935 - Ironed in p.m. Feast of the Sacred Heart. All went to Mass but Gertrude kept the little ones went to installation of Fr. Collins in evening. Varnished bedroom.

SATURDAY, JUNE 29, 1935 - Saturdays work as usual. Ed, Papa & I went to town in morning - finished ironing Ed.

SUNDAY, JUNE 30, 1935 - Stephen, Bernard & Ed here for dinner. All went to Mass - Papa took John, Gerald & Maurice to second Mass - Papa & I , Gertrude, Laurence & baby went to Wills in p.m. hard rain.
