1970 Diary

Previous month - October

SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 1, 1970 - I got up early to get ready to go with Gene's to 7:30 Mass, then I had a good breakfast & worked around here getting my work finished up. Leonard, Marilyn, Doug & Donna came & visited for a little while. I got a good dinner, finished ready the papers, rested a while, then ready my prayers. After supper I wrote out telephone numbers. Pat, Anna May, Gene & Bessie called on phone.

MONDAY, NOVEMBER 2, 1970 - I got around in fairly good time. I knew I had to get the hem in my last dress so I can send them to the cleaners. So I finished it tonight after supper. I got Bro. John's letter, so I wrote to him tonight. Also check to the Mary Knoll Fathers, Jesuit & Sem. Guild. Pat came in for a few minutes to get fish for her aquarium that Betty got for her & Betty put my hair up after I washed it.

TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 3, 1970 - I got up in good time and got partly ready for the day. I got my breakfast over and plants watered. Then Betty took me down to vote. I measured out the strips for the 2nd baby quilt, so I have it ready to put together. Louise came after me this evening to go to club & Rita D. brought me home. A very nice time. I wrote to Sister M. & Joe & Tina tonight. Up very late; not sleepy yet.

WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 4, 1970 - I got up fairly early & got my washing started and got a good breakfast. So I kept quite busy all day & was pretty tired. Betty took my checks to the bank & cleaned my floors. I folded the clothes & kept going. I'd try to sleep a little but couldn't. Pat & Nancy here this eve.

THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 5, 1970 - I got around in fairly good time today as I wanted to finish the top of the little blue quilt, which I did. Betty got my mail in & also got my groceries. She also got my dresses from the cleaners. I talked to Louise & she said she would take me to the 7:00 Mass Sat morning which is for Dad.

FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 6, 1970 - I picked a nice big rose today. I got around fairly early & got my breakfast and started my ironing early and got finished before noon, also watered plants & got a big dinner. Got a little rest this PM, read prayers. Libb, Lyle & Rita came this eve. Libb picked me a couple of bouquets for me. We played cards then I got mail ready, letter to Benny, cards & checks, Harold for flowers and Louise & Carol for anniversary.

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 7, 1970 - I got up around 5:30 AM to get ready to go to 7:00 Mass for Dad with Louise. I was so happy to get to go. Then I got my breakfast and all forenoon I kept busy cleaning and got my prayers read. Kept working and listened to ball games this PM. Pat called this eve. Wilma called this PM. I finished a quilt block this eve & laid out another. Been a very nice day.

SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 8, 1970 - Dad's Birthday. I got up early again so I could go with Betty to 7:30 Mass. Then I made a good breakfast and just got my work done up & watched TV some. Then a good chicken dinner. Wilma brought my groceries this PM & we had a nice long visit. In the evening Gene & Betty & the children came for a little while.

MONDAY, NOVEMBER 9, 1970 - Louise & Carl's Anniversary. It's been a rainy day. Anna May called to tell me that they were not taking Carl & Louise out for supper tonight on account of the trouble Carl has been having with tooth, maybe tomorrow night. I worked hard today to get the 2 little quilts ready to put together. I hope to finish them this week. Also canned 2 pts. peppers. Wrote to Sister M, Bro J & Tony tonight. Also mad out a Get Well card for Frank Sueppel.

TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 10, 1970 - I got up in fairly good time and got my plants watered, then worked on my little quilt & got it ready to tie. I was sort of tired today & didn't get around too fast. I went to mailbox twice, mailed letters to Tony, Sister M & Bro J, Get Well card to Frank Sueppel. Tonight I went with Carl & Louise over to Charles & Anna Mays to celebrate Carl & Louise's anniversary. Had a real nice time.

WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 11, 1970 - I got around in pretty good time and got my washing done and dried & folded, got my prayers read & dinner started. Then Pat & Nancy came and we had dinner and Pat & Nancy did the dishes. Then Pat & I worked with the flowers, then she left at 4:00 PM. Nancy stayed until eve. Brenda & Philip here for a little while as Betty had to go to the eye Dr. Pat & Glenn & Jerry came while the others, all but Kathy, were at Catechism.

THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 12, 1970 - I got up in pretty good time & worked pretty hard, especially to get the little quilt tied. I didn't get quite done. Betty got my groceries in the PM. I wrote to John Frantz & was awfully tired & sleepy tonight. It seemed like a hard day.

FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 13, 1970 - I didn't get up too early but I got mail ready for Betty to mail, John F. letter, phone bill & sympathy cards to Mary and Viola Sielman. I finished tying the quilt & did my ironing in the forenoon. Also washed my hair. Betty came & put it up, also vacuumed the floors. I worked more on the quilt this PM. Paul & Lillian were here this eve.

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 14, 1970 - I got up and took my bath and the got my breakfast. I didn't have any real hard work today, but I seemed to be busy all day just straightening up & cleaning the house & taking care of plants & flowers & also finished the little quilt all but stitching around the edge. Gene & I went to 7:30 Mass & then to Confession.

SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 15, 1970 - I got up just in time to take part in the Shut In Mass at 7:30 then I got my good breakfast, Gene's sausage. I read my prayers. I worked around with magazines, then fried my rabbit & baked potatoes. I enjoyed a good dinner. Libb & Lyle came & then brought our Christmas turkeys. Cost me $23.77. They put out my poinsettias & fixed her a plant. Louise & Carl came in the eve. I wrote to Larry & Mrs. Gibbons.

MONDAY, NOVEMBER 16, 1970 - I got up and felt fairly good. I mailed Larry's & Mrs. Gibbons' letters. I worked pretty steady getting the little blue striped quilt together and ready to tie. I wrote letter to Bro. John & also got letter ready for Vietnam help. Had a good supper & then watched TV and sewed up the quilt block strips. Pretty tired. Joann & Pat called today.

TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 17, 1970 - I got around in good time as I wanted to get started early at tying the quilt and I was luck & got it all tied today. Also watered the plants and got my new night light bulb put in. Gerald & Pauline & 3 younger boys came this evening for a little visit. After they were gone, I wrote a letter to Sister Margaretta and got other mail ready before supper, so I'm getting caught up with it.

WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 18, 1970 - I got up and started my washing, did the bedding first. I got along real good & felt fairly good. Betty left Brenda here for a little while when she went to the eye Dr. I talked to Libb & Gene, Lillian & Joann on phone. Pat called. No Catechism tonight at Regina for their kids so she didn't come in. Betty came over to put my lower sheet on the bed.

THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 19, 1970 - Larry's 47th birthday. I got around in fairly good time. Got my ironing done & some mending on my dresses. Betty got my groceries. I finished basting around the outside of the blue striped quilt. Betty got my aspirins & little people Christmas cards. I got my Holy Hour made before supper & put up my hair this eve.

FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 20, 1970 - I got around in pretty good time this morning & got partly ready to go to Pat's this PM for supper & then to the chorus at West High where Kathy and Anne D. were both singing. It really was good & I enjoyed it a lot. Then Kaspers brought me home & stayed a while. Pat fixed up my imitation poinsettia for me & put the candles in the holders. They look nice. I finished my prayers 11:00-12:00.

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 21, 1970 - I got up & took my bathe & got a good breakfast and Louise came with my groceries and we had a good long visit. I got some of my prayers read before noon, but just not very fast today. I enjoyed see Ohio & Michigan play their football game. Ohio won 20-9 and Iowa beat Illinois. I got a lunch for my supper & then went to 7:30 Mass with Gene & then he took me to Louise & Carl's for to play cards. Leonard's family was there. Douglas' birthday tomorrow.

SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 22, 1970 - I got up in time to see the 7:30 Mass for Shut Ins. I was glad I could. Then I worked around wrapped Nancy's gift & read prayers, got 2 pkgs. Christmas cards & tags & stamps from Doug & Diane. I also gave them some guppies. After dinner I wrote to Betty & Moe's Joan. Got ready to go with Gene's to Pat's for Nancy's birthday supper. Very nice time. I got very tired.

MONDAY, NOVEMBER 23, 1970 - I got around in fairly good time. Got things ready for Betty to take downtown. Got my machine opened & did some mending, then I stitched around the edges of the little quilts. Then finished them this eve. All done but pressing. I wrote a letter to Bro John & also send offering to Fr. Coyle. Betty came over & vacuumed the floors & put up my hair & Gene hauled out another truck load of stuff from the orchard. Glenn borrowed Bob Roger's truck.

TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 24, 1970 - I got up in pretty good time, mailed letter to Bro. John & another offertory letter. I got my work done, but I was quite slow today. Made cranberry sauce. Barbara K. was here for a while. In the afternoon, Pat came for me & I went out there again for supper & then went to West High to see Mary Lou play in the band & Debbie sing in the chorus.

WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 25, 1970 - I got up and got my washing started & got a fairly good breakfast. Marilyn & Pat & Joann called then Betty went for groceries & then Reg & Eileen, Anita & Jeffery came & we had coffee & fun. Louise called later & I hurried to get my clothes starched & my dinner & got ready to go with Gene & my dinner & dishes done. WE got Sister M this eve. Frantz's came & Paul's 3. A nice time.

THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 26, 1970 - Sister & I got up fairly early to get ready to go with Paul's to 9:00 o'clock Thanksgiving Day Mass. It was beautiful and grand. God Bless them for taking us. The we went home with them for breakfast & then Paul brought us home sometime between 11:00 & 12:00 AM. Sister started making the dilly bread & rolls. I got celery & carrots ready. Pat & Glenn & family brought in the turkey, dressing, peas, salad & pumpkin pie. A very delicious meal. I thank Thee Lord. We did have a very nice evening & watched TV. '

FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 27, 1970 - We got around in fairly good time. I washed a batch of clothes with the tablecloth. I didn't feel very good. Sort of weak this AM, but we washed out some of dresses & slips, getting them ready to put away & Sister M. worked hard at the ironing & other things. We got the summer clothes put away. She baked 2 loaves of raisin bread & a batch of doughnuts for Gene & me. Marilyn & Bill & children came out for a while before supper. Quiet eve, no company.

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 28, 1970 - I got up & took my bathe. We didn't get breakfast very early, so had a light dinner. Sister made rolls, apricots for Betty, cinnamon rolls for me. WE got my hair put up, then Louise came to see us. Also Ben, Joann & Barbara. Then later Leonard & Marilyn, Doug, Donna & Diane. Also one of her sister's boys. We had Gene's for supper for his birthday. We went to 7:30 Mass this eve. Gertrude & Nick here this eve.

SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 29, 1970 - Sister & I didn't get up too early but we got around. I missed the Shut Ins Mass. Had our breakfast & work done up, then Sister went with Betty to Eicher's & Pleasant Valley flower opening. When she got back Connie & Ann came for us & we went to Wilma's for dinner. Then went to their store & bought some things & then took Sister home, and then back to Hills for supper. Played some cards & then they brought me home. I wrote to Tony, ordered 20 Spiritual Bouquet cards & sent money for National Shrine & St Jude cards.

MONDAY, NOVEMBER 30, 1970 - Gene's Birthday - 36 years. I got up in fairly good time. Had quite a bit to do. Been quite tired all day. Didn't get Bro John's letter today, but mailed one to Tony & for the Spiritual Bouquet cards for the service men & married grandchildren. Rested a while this PM. Started writing addresses in my new address book. Watched TV. Libb called this eve. Pat called before supper.
