1956 Diary Transcribed by Rita Decker SUNDAY, JAN. 1,1956 Went to 7:30 Mass. Pat & Glenn to 10:15. We then all went to Carl's and Louise's for a turkey dinner & then played cards in P.M. Went to Kaspers for duck supper. Stayed late Mr. & Mrs. Woods & Don Woods there. Glenn showed pictures men played cards the women played yuppy. MONDAY JAN. 2 1956 Moe pop & I went to Mass. Then we all went to Wilma's for dinner, but Leonard. Theen Wilma& I visited Sister Margaretta a while in the P.M. Pat & Glnn went down for a while too -then they went to Heitzmans for supper and we came home. Len &Marilyn came out for a little while. Shirley & Joe Elam also came over and rented the aluminum house. TUESDAY JAN. 3 1956 Went to Mass then Pat & I did a big washing-hung most of the things over in Louise's basement. Lillian was in town shopping all forenoon the children were here for dinner- Pat & Glenn shopped in P.M. and got Pat's driver's license. We went to Libbs for supper. WEDNESDAY JAN. 4 1956 Went to Mass-got a good chicken dinner Pat & Glenn & Kathy went down to Mercy Hospital to see Sister Barnabas and to Tiffin for Glenn a hair cut. In the P.M. they went to see Sister Margaretta and show her some pictures. Then went on to Joe Hurts for supper I ironed some. Marilyn & Carrol came out and went with us to ball games-St. Mary's Ia City beat St Mary's' Waterloo 74-43. THURSDAY JAN. 5, 1956 Went to Mass-Pat & Glenn hunted up some of their things-then went to Bob Kaspers for dinner and another Kasper Reunion-they got back way late. I had waffles & sausage for supper, Len home late, so -I was also late going to the shower at Louise's for Baby Francis had a nice time. We missed Novena, Holy Hour-I was also ½ Hr. late with my Holy Hour. FRIDAY JAN. 6 1956 Went to Mass First Friday-Pat & Glenn & Kathy started home a little after 9:30 a.m. awful quiet day after they left. I rested some-Ben came out around noon-I cleaned up the house and finished ironing. Paul's children were here after school. Pretty cold today. SATURDAY JAN 7, 1956 Went to Mass-then down town for a while in the a.m. Paul's girls here while the folks were shopping & boys got hair cut. I wrote to Sister Margaretta this a.m. and Pat & Gene this p.m.-also sent for building catalog-mailed them when we went down for Confession SUNDAY JAN. 8, 1956 A real nice day Dad & I & Moe went to 7:30 Mass Men's Sunday. Len & Marilyn went to 11:30 Nicholas's came down went to 11:00 at St. Pat's and were here for dinner & supper. They and Moe went down to visit Sister Margaretta in the p.m. MONDAY JAN. 9, 1956 Went to Mass. Sent milk bill for fab dolls, wrote to Pat. Pop took the eggs down in p.m. Pop & I went down town. I to the doctor, blood pressure 174/94. We started to plan to go to see Aunt Minnie, as weather is good. TUESDAY JAN. 10, 1956 Went to 6:30 Mass at the Convent. They Clarence brought Wilma & Carol up and we left at once for Nebraska City, Nebraska to see Minnie. Got there a little after 2:00 p.m. She wasn't feeling too good. We stayed at the Home all night and for supper and breakfast. She wasn't so good after breakfast. I slept well. WEDNESDAY JAN.11, 1956 Went to 6:45 Mass in the chapel at Mt. Carmel Home. Had a good breakfast then went into see Minnie. Her stomach was upset again & she wasn't feeling good. We left there around 10:00 a.m. Nebraska City at 10:15. Got home around 5:25 p.m. THURSDAY JAN. 12, 1956 Went to 7:30 Mass wrote to Minnie, Brother John, Pat & Gene, besides doing a good sized washing so pretty tired. Didn't take the clothes down. Len out trying to see the new sized coke in stores. FRIDAY JAN. 13, 1956 Went to Mass -wrote to Ann. Got my clothes ready and did all my ironing in the afternoon. Got pretty tired-Pop hauled old lumber for Nelson-good weather. St. Mary's beat St. Wenceslaus 82-44 SATURDAY JAN. 14, 1956 Went to Mass as usual. Wrote to Pat & Gene. Pop down town in morning & to Ekwalls sale in the p.m. I cleaned up the house some this p.m. and got some of the Christmas things packed. Moe didn't come home. Len & Marilyn went to Kabela's for supper SUNDAY JAN.15, 1956 Len & Marilyn went to 6:30 Mass Dad and I to 7:30. Moe came home after breakfast but still to eat. Marilyn was here for dinner-then she and Len took down the Christmas tree. Rather a damp snowy day and sort of icy on the highway. Libb & Lyle came up. We had planned to go to Aunt Ells, but didn't like the roads so stayed here and played cards. Ben & Joann and family came up to Hills to see Sister Margaretta. Then went home before dark-also Moe went home early-a quiet eve. MONDAY JAN. 16, 1956 Went to 7:30 Mass-wrote letter to Pat-sent check for her raker. Lillian & the children here. She was down town all forenoon Louise came over and helped cut out my new night grown. I got started on sewing it this p.m. Got Pat's check so Lillian got me envelops and the mailed Pat's check for me. When they went to get Paul on their way home. Len home this evening. TUESDAY JAN. 17 1956 Went to Mass. Then did the washing- Louise took over a basketful and hung them up in her basement. After school Ronny also took a basketful over. Got my work done up then played yahtzee with the kids. WEDNESDAY JAN.18 1956 Went to Mass, I wrote my letters. Then got started ironing, before noon. Finished in the p.m. was awful tired. Wilma called she heard from Mrs. Bourg & she said they took Aunt Minnie to the Hospital on Monday. THURSDAY JAN. 19, 1956 Went to Mass, wrote my letters. Louise came over and helped get my night grown made. Terry Booth called and said Aunt Minnie was pretty low. We went to Novena and confession in the p.m. Have lots of cramps and diarrhea today. FRIDAY JAN. 20, 1956 Went to Mass, wrote to Larry's & Pat's. Lillian left Johnnie and Linda here, while she went down town. I still don't feel good. Lillian came back in time for dinner. Aunt Frances called she had heard from Lillian. Aunt Minnie about the same. Got a letter from Gene. Carol & Melvin got the mumps. SATURDAY JAN. 21, 1956 Went to Mass felt some better but still pretty cramps etc. Got a letter from Pat, cleaned up the house. Moe came home, awful cold today. Marilyn & Roseann came down with the mumps Lyle came out and told us. SUNDAY JAN.22 1956 Went to 7:30 Mass. Paul's didn't stop in. Marilyn & Leonard went to 9:00 came out for breakfast. Mary called and they came up for dinner. They brought part of along. We had a real nice time. I felt better. Marilyn worked from 3:00 to 11:00 Leonard to bed early, Moe went home early and quiet eve. MONDAY JAN. 23 1956 Went to 7:30 Mass as usual, took Charles as Louise & Carl went to Des Moines. Did my washing, pop took a big basket full over to Louise's to hang in the basement Shirley here and paid us rent, they moved in Saturday and Sunday. Libb & Lyle came up this eve. TUESDAY JAN. 24 1956 Went to Mass as usual. Dampened clothes and wrote my letters. Ironed in the p.m. Wilma came & said she planned to go to Nebraska on Thursday. Then later on pop decided to go too and drive out. Awfully tired tonight. WEDNESDAY JAN. 25 1956 Went to Mass, I got letter from Terry saying Aunt Minnie about the same and that any one that came could stay at Mrs. Bourg. After dinner pop and I went to Wilma's and then to see Sister & Aunt Anna. Got chicken feed on the way home, then pop went down and got hair cut. THURSDAY JAN. 26, 1956 We went to Mass. Then after breakfast we waited for Wilma to come and then called Clarence to find out. She was waiting for dad to come. So he left home then after 9:30 a.m. I just worked around, wrote letters and cards. No company in eve, I was alone. FRIDAY JAN. 27, 1956 Went to Mass with Louise, wrote letters to Pat & Brother John. Baked a batch of cookies. The school children came early afternoon; they helped me a little, and then played Yahtzee with them. Libb, Lyle & the boys & Rita here in the evening. Bobby's birthday. Heard from Wilma they got their O.K. SATURDAY JAN. 28, 1956 Didn't get to Mass, I hated to ask Louise to drive out on the icy roads. Was alone about all day but kept busy. Leonard got home about 4:30 or 5:00. Moe had to work, got home for supper. SUNDAY JAN. 29, 1956 Went to 7:30 Mass with Moe, Len didn't come home for breakfast. Moe and I went to Libbs for dinner and supper. Then Libb & Lyle were invited out and we came home. Moe went home early, and then I was alone. MONDAY JAN. 30, 1956 Went to Mass with Louise. Wrote to Pat & Wilma. Then she came over and fed the chickens & stayed to see if wash machine would work. Then I did the washing and the boys carried a basket full over to Louise for her to hang up for me in the basement. Nice day, pop got home from Nebraska at 3:45 p.m. We went to a ball game; St. Mary's won over St. Columbkill 101-63 TUESDAY JAN.31, 1956 We went to Mass, I wrote to Larry & Gene. Wilma called & said Sister Margaretta could go along to Nichols in the p.m. so I called Frances & asked her to go along too. We had a real nice time. We got Marilyn on the way home and she was here for supper, Leonard got home at 7:30. Next Month - February |
