1934 Diary Transcribed by Ron Milder Previous month - August SATURDAY, SEPT 1, 1934 - Papa & Ed went to town in the morning. Bud here in the evening - it started to rain in the evening- Bad auto accident of our neighbors near Chicago. SUNDAY, SEPT 2, 1934 - Frances Lindles baby born. Very bad roads, Wilma, Paul & Gerald stayed home. we stayed in for Barney Oostindorphes (?) funeral & called down to Whites in evening. MONDAY, SEPT 3, 1934 - Rainy day. Louise called up. First day of school - Papa & I went to Whites after supper and stayed all night. LABOR DAY, 1934 - rainy day. Louise called up. Stayed home all day - First day of school. Papa & I went to Whites after supper. TUESDAY, SEPT 4, 1934 - Mrs. White passed away around 6 a.m. Elizabeth stayed there most off the day. went to funeral in Muscatine in the p.. Airplane landed in Charlie's pasture. WEDNESDAY, SEPT 5, 1934 - Elizabeth went to Whites again and helped them out. Wilma washed some. went to W. Liberty in evening to say Rosary for Mrs. White. Also to Dexter's for farewell for Margaret. THURSDAY, SEPT 6, 1934 - Went to Mrs. Whites funeral at 10 a.m. large crowd. Children had half day off at school. Bernards birthday. Letter from Aunt Minnie. FRIDAY, SEPT 7, 1934 - Washed - Bud here in the evening - men worked on car. SATURDAY, SEPT 8, 1934 - Ed took the children to first Bible Class. Wilma ironed - cold packed 30 qts. tomatoes. Ed, Paul & Papa picked them at Whites. SUNDAY, SEPT 9, 1934 - I stayed home from Mass - First Sunday School. Ed & Wilma brought Louise out. Brought my set of dishes home - Ed- Louise, Wilma & Eliz went to Wilton in the evening. MONDAY, SEPT 10, 1934 - Girls worked at cleaning house upstairs. Sent card to Father. Papa & I took cream up in the morning - airplane flew low over the trees. Paul quite sure it was show. TUESDAY, SEPT 11, 1934 - Papa Kalsomined our room in the p.m. Boys hauled manure. Bud here in the evening also Harold, Veatress & mother. WEDNESDAY, SEPT 12, 1934 - Cleaned house, Papa Kalsomined ceiling in Eliz room, Wilma did the sides. Papa & Ed helped cut corn at Whites in the p.m. THURSDAY, SEPT 13, 1934 - Washed - Papa and Ed helped fill silo at Whites. I made a nightgown & mended clothes. FRIDAY, SEPT 14, 1934 - Men helped fill silo at Whites got through in the p.m. Started to rain - I worked on Wilmas black dress. Wilma ironed. SATURDAY, SEPT 15, 1934 - Went with Papa & children to W. Liberty and to confession. finished W. dress all but collar. W. finished ironing. Ed- W - & Eliz went to Muscatine in evening. SUNDAY, SEPT 16, 1934 - Eliz stayed home, all the rest went to Mass. Bud & Helen B. here in the p.m. also for supper & evening. Geraldine here for supper. Mrs. Malley, white children in p.m. Reuben & Myrtle in evening. MONDAY, SEPT 17, 1934 - Wilma, Eliz & Paul picked tomatoes at Whites. Ed left in the afternoon for Art Rogge's to work again. Papa mowed soy beans, help Philips in a.m. TUESDAY, SEPT 18, 1934 - W.E.& P. picked tomatoes. Papa helped in the forenoon. WEDNESDAY, SEPT 19, 1934 - Girls stayed home and washed. Paul picked tomatoes. Papa took cream to town & got repairs for Whites rake(mowed soy beans in a.m.) THURSDAY, SEPT 20, 1934 - W.E.&.P went tomato picking again, sent letter to Sr. Margaretta. FRIDAY, SEPT 21, 1934 - Rec'd corn -hog check- Papa & girls went to Muscatine in p.m.- Rainy day. SATURDAY, SEPT 22, 1934 - Saturdays work and Papa and Wilma went after Louise. John started to Bible Class. SUNDAY, SEPT 23, 1934 - All went to Mass - Maurice stayed home - had a good dinner for Louise birthday. She brought home a birthday cake. MONDAY, SEPT 24, 1934 - Wilma, Paul & Eliz picked tomatoes, Papa worked on corn binder. TUESDAY, SEPT 25, 1934 -Washed & ironed - Uncle Henry & Hubert here. Papa went to town in the evening to get repairs, fixed the rake. WEDNESDAY, SEPT 26, 1934 - Papa & I went to Muscatine in p.m. Very rainy - had pigeon pie for supper, sold 10 chickens for $6.40, 14 & 16 cents a lb. THURSDAY, SEPT 27, 1934 - Eliz, Wilma & Paul picked tomatoes, finished tieing comfort. FRIDAY, SEPT 28, 1934 - White came after rake. I tied a comfort. Wilma & Eliz went picking tomatoes, came home afternoon - red heifer fresh - Papa delivered 8 red pigs to Muscatine - cut soybeans. SATURDAY, SEPT 29, 1934 - Finished cutting soybeans. Saturdays work - besides moving cabinet & sideboard - I sewed on Eliz dress & Wilma's skirt - Papa & 2 of the girls went to church in evening. SUNDAY, SEPT 30, 1934 - Forty Hours Devotions commenced. Paul stayed home in morning - Bud here a little while in p.m. Papa & I, the boys & G made visits in p.m. Next month - October |
